A very old film - but with proper characters!

I love these old British films.

I can remember that film being shot in Bolton where I lived at the time. I recently re-watched it and was horrified at the housing conditions that were shown. It was like going back to the dark ages.

I watched it on Talking Pictures not long ago, as I do many old films----which were the best compared to now.

Was that the film with the herring?
If so I remember it well.
One of the daughters, or possibly both went on to have successful careers.
I think one was Hannah Gordon
