Bloody football!

Yes, I know some like it, but looking at the tv schedule for the forthcoming Saturday evening, 7.15 to 9.45 on BBC 1 is given over to it, then 10.35 to 11.50! Give me strength!

I suppose one saving grace is that it's not international games, with people (and I use the term lightly) chanting their support for a non existent country called "Engerland".

Most of the men in our family are football mad. They have season tickets for their various teams and when we get together it's the main topic of conversation. Drives me mad. DH has a season ticket and for many years in the football season, we had to organise our lives around it pretty much. 'We can't go (wherever) that day. I'll be at the match'. He still has his ticket but he's not so rigid now. I don't mind it being back. He's really missed it and we have two TVs.

Many years ago my husband who was a serving member of the forces was deployed overseas for over 6 months, I was left with 2 toddlers and a half built kitchen. The only advantage was that whilst he was away the Olympics took place and I did not have to watch any of it.
He will watch anything sport related and I still think it is a complete turn off, but now have 2 grandsons who are football mad as well.

I always think football should be on a dedicated channel. So many times, before lockdown, programmes were taken off because of football. Also,it goes on for hours, they have to discuss it before the match, discuss it after the match, other programmes are often delayed because they're still talking about it.There must be some way to keep everyone happy.

polly123 Thu 18-Jun-20 12:33:47

Just awful! There definitely should be a sports channel so we don't have to suffer it. Fortunately there are no football or even sport supporters in our house Thank goodness.

BBJS Thu 18-Jun-20 12:32:47

Big sporting activities replace the "Roman Arenas."
Better than warring I suppose.

Rufus2 Thu 18-Jun-20 12:24:48

Well I hope very many enjoy Snooker
Grandad1943 Of course we do! Why do you have to ask? wink
Unfortunately we (I) can't pick up live BBC/ITV here, so I hope video appears somewhere later.
But don't mention Judd TRUMP; the natives will go wild! grin
Most of the sports fans on GN seem to be "spoilsports", reminiscent of World Soccer a while back; what motivates non-fans to come on and moan about what they don't like? hmm But hands off beach volley ball; the "uniform" helps concentrate the mind, even at the risk of an infarction!
Btw; where are the lady snookeroos?
Good Health

Defo should be a dedicated sports channel. Mind you there would be a lot of arguments if there was only one TV in the house I guess.
Cannot stand football but I am a fanatical rugby union supporter. Luckily DH is the same.

Sussexborn Thu 18-Jun-20 12:13:07

At least it’s not cricket!

I guess every type of hobby seems senseless to those who aren’t interested. It’s more expensive to make things from scratch mostly now but the satisfaction of knitting, sewing etc is a pleasure to some people but I am not one of them.

The sense of pure joy when I happened to be in the town when the local football team had won something important was brilliant to behold. The team are very involved locally and do a lot for/with local youngsters and charities. Almost everyone, except me, has clothing in the appropriate colour with badges on.

It makes people happy and I don’t begrudge them that! My own interest is zero and knowledge is even less! OH will happily watch football, rugby, tennis, cricket but mainly formula one but judges when the pundits have finished spouting before switching on and then off at the end of the game. I quite enjoy watching the celebrations at the end but he’s not interested. If we have other plans he doesn’t fuss or bother.

My Dad and two of my brothers played and then refereed football, rugby and cricket. Two older grandsons play various sports, mainly football, rugby, cricket and recently hockey. The two new grandchildren have in laws who look down their noses at football, so it’ll be interesting to see how that pans out. Luckily I learned early on to switch off and read whilst they all got on with it but I am happy if they are happy.

Zero interest from me but good to see others happy and enjoying their sport or hobbies as long as I don’t have to partake in any way. Just give me something to read and I’ll be happy and let those who enjoy sport get on with it.

I just hate it, such yobbish behaviour at times and I don't feel the players are good role models for young boys (and girls).

ginny Thu 18-Jun-20 12:09:30

My husband doesn’t like football, hooray. He does however like rugby, golf and snooker. I’m not interested in any sport, not even olympics or Wimbledon
It doesn’t bother me though. I record anything might like and watch it at my leisure.
Then I take myself off to my Happy Place ( craft room).

Mrsdof Thu 18-Jun-20 12:07:42

Well I for one am very happy that my beloved THFC are back. I am not too bothered about watching other games and neither is my DH. We generally agree on what games to watch so a very happy household here. C’mon you Spurs grin

Atqui Thu 18-Jun-20 12:01:13

Thank goodness my husband doesn’t like it!!

AlisonKF Thu 18-Jun-20 11:34:22

Sky sub.up by £25.00! For football. You ust be mad - or is it your sons or husband? TV is so tedious at present that filling up the time with sport along with repeats won't make much difference.

suziewoozie Thu 18-Jun-20 11:24:07

tinetogo footballers are not overpaid at all - they are paid what they are worth to their clubs and sponsors which seems eminently fair. If you want to have a discussion about the distribution of incomes in society, that’s one thing but in the society in which we live where commodities traders, currency speculators, instagram influencers, pop stars all receive huge amounts of income, why just pick on footballers?

Nannan2 Thu 18-Jun-20 11:05:30

They're taking the chance too, to voice some of the publics questions and worries etc at the same time, and broach the problems we've had like lack of haircuts and home-schooling etc. (& yes Arron could have kept his own hair short by shaving his head himself, which i presume is what he had done even in real life?) So yes, well done Emmerdale.

4allweknow Thu 18-Jun-20 11:03:06

Fortunately my DH is not a football fan. Having had an older brother who was a professional footballer I grew to detest anything to do with the game. 14 years older than me a good part of my childhood was centred around football eg what we ate, where we lived, what happened at weekends. He was revered by everyone, friends and family. Yes he had more money than most we knew, a fancy car, foreign holidays when I was taken for a week in a tiny caravan only 100 miles away. Goodness I can feel the vile churning just thinking about it. Anyone hear the item on football on Jeremy Vine yesterday. Two men absolutely livid that they could not attend a game, saw no reason for the 2 mtr rule at all anywhere. Idiots. After the item a Dr phoned with a comment saying when either of the men can manage certain procedures, diagnose and deal with some of the horrendous effects of Covid-19 then he would be prepared to listen to their comments, until then they should be quiet.

Nannan2 Thu 18-Jun-20 10:59:00

Yes NannyC2, im liking how Emmerdale have now embraced the lockdown and are now actually devoting episodes to how some (2 at a time) characters are faring during the pandemic.its been better than what corrie and eastenders are doing and just ignoring the fact that life has drastically changed suddenly while their 'world' is still the same as before. Not sure Emmerdale has it quite right though, as they all seem to have a reason to be either 2 alone in their home while all rest of family are 'farmed out' to other houses or they are staying somewhere else as they're 'sheilding' someone or other- when in our reality we were supposed to stay where we actually live, as a family, even if they're sheilding- but still, well done done to them for being brave enough to give it a go!smile

timetogo2016 Thu 18-Jun-20 10:58:16

Can`t stand it.
Just a bunch of over payed prima-donnas.
It`s obscene the amount of money they earn.

Flakesdayout Thu 18-Jun-20 10:46:59

I really don't like much sport at all. Football is so drawn out. Highlights I would tolerate but as someone has said, there is the game, the highlights, the chat, and then the repeat. Not everyone likes sport and yes there should be a dedicated channel. One of the benefits of lockdown - no football. Hasn't it been great

Nannan2 Thu 18-Jun-20 10:46:39

Yes, some back on is ok, but what some of us are suggesting is why not just put it all on one channel, on the 'free to air' channels, (which BBC are not, as we pay for licence) dedicated to just all the sports, that we, who dislike it, don't have to bother with, and then we don't get our usual soaps, or afternoon programmes etc. disrupted?i think its a genius idea im sick of forking out for tv licence for all the mediocre rubbish on tv these days. And ITV are not much better, but at least theres no licence for them too,its time they put sports separately like sky dohmm

leeds22 Thu 18-Jun-20 10:43:04

Fortunately, DH isn’t really interested in football either. His home team will probably go bankrupt after cv, so that will finish off any lingering interest.

Mapleleaf Thu 18-Jun-20 10:40:26

Luckily DH hates football too, so it won't be on here, either. As others suggest, it should be on a designated sports channel, not taking over one of the main channels for most of an evening or two; plus, no doubt, repeated highlights during the coming days. They're like a dog with a bone - won't ease off!

NannyC2 Thu 18-Jun-20 10:38:53

I'm pleased it's back for those who enjoy it - I watch some of the bigger matches and do love the World Cup when it's on. My son was a coach and my grandson is very involved.
Two of my granddaughters love horse riding and competing. We can't all like the same things.
As well as cultural things on TV I do watch a couple of soaps as well, although my husband wonders what I see in them! Regardless, I still watch as it's my choice- however I can't see how they are going to pan out in the current situation and maybe they will have to cease for a while? Any thoughts?

Purplepixie Thu 18-Jun-20 10:38:49

I’m not a big fan of football and neither is DH but my 2 sons are. The way to think is: If the football is coming back then it is one step back into normality and some sort of sanity for us all. Read a book and let them get on with watching sport on the TV or buy another TV and watch something else in another room. But hey, it is not that bad! Remember all the poor people who have lost family members during this pandemic.

Aepgirl Thu 18-Jun-20 10:36:07

I don’t see why this is essential. More important to get our commerce up and running again. I know sport is important to many, but until the fans are allowed to go to watch matches I don’t see the point.
