I recorded the first episode last night. I started to watch, but it seems to be yet another BBC drama set partly in the dark. Is it just me?
If anyone has watched the whole hour, is it worth persevering?

Gajahgran Thu 09-Jul-20 19:23:25

Bluebell I love your cat story. Now I know why I have a collection of teapots, as soon as anybody saw I had some teapots they decided they knew what I would want for Christmas! I have had to hide a lot of them in the loft.

BlueBelle Thu 09-Jul-20 18:36:52

See I don’t see it unkind to have a different opinion, perhaps
I m just not a good liar, but I d find it very hard to tell someone, however lovely, that I enjoyed something I didn’t gajargran Guess we re all different I think I learnt it a long time ago when my mum bought me a decorative wooden cat
I told her it was lovely, after that every time she went on holiday I got another wooden cat ?
?

Bluebell I do know what you mean but she is such a kind and lovely person I cannot disappoint her. Its very difficult when someone is such a long way away. Its not so easy just to have a laugh about it. I have now watched it till the end and whilst I cannot say I really enjoyed it, the plot did become a lot clearer and there was a (sort of) happy ending.

BlueBelle Mon 06-Jul-20 15:35:48

I managed 2 then gave up am I missing much ?

gajahgran don’t be afraid to voice a different opinion to a relative I would never tell someone I enjoyed something that I didn’t

Calendargirl Mon 06-Jul-20 15:30:28

I gave up after episode one, but wish it had been better as Sunday night viewing is awful at the moment.

loopyloo Mon 06-Jul-20 14:57:29

I find it all implausible. Things happen and how does she get herself all cleaned up, by the next scene?
Can't follow the plot at all.
And first she can't read then she can???
I might just watch the bits of the boat and the scenery and fast forward the rest.

Atqui Mon 06-Jul-20 14:14:51

Anybody watch this last night? The flashbacks and forwards were so confusing

Gajahgran Mon 29-Jun-20 20:02:22

Good idea Callistemon I will do that. Thanks ?

Callistemon Mon 29-Jun-20 19:28:45

grin
Just read the synopsis and the reviews and tell her you loved the scenery, Gajahgran.

At the end of episode 1 I decided the main character was stupid so couldn't be bothered to see what was her fate.

Gajahgran Mon 29-Jun-20 19:07:30

I have now seen 2 episodes and I am struggling to stay focussed. I cannot understand how the main character has survived the huge voyage but appears to be so stupid. Unfortunately a New Zealand relative has made me promise to watch it to the end. She loved it but cannot find anyone else who feels the same. I will probably be attempting episode 3 with my eyes taped open.

BlueBelle Mon 29-Jun-20 18:51:49

I missed episode 3 I m really wondering g if it’s worth going back and watching it or just forget it

harrysgran Mon 29-Jun-20 18:05:15

I watched the third episode last night and finding it hard going I keep hoping it will get better not relaxing viewing for me on a Sunday evening I'll be giving it a miss

lemongrove Mon 29-Jun-20 10:40:39

?

Callistemon Mon 29-Jun-20 10:17:56

especially the bits in the dark
Every drama made by the BBC lately is so dark we wondered if they haven't paid the electricity bill and they've been cut off.

It makes it difficult to know what's going on and none are viewer friendly

TerriBull Mon 29-Jun-20 10:15:48

As stated in a previous post, I read the book when it first came out and have forgotten the intricacies of the plot, it's firmly planted in my memory of being over 800 pages and tedious. Strangely, my husband seems to be enjoying itshock which is why we have it on and now he's having to explain the finer details to me because it seems I'm still baffled after the book and the series but then I'm prone to drifting off!

Alexa Mon 29-Jun-20 10:05:06

I can't watch it. The story is so vapid the effort to understand the flashbacks and deliberate smokiness is not worth a minute of my time and energy.

Drama is expensive to produce and this one has not redeeming features and will be a big failure.

Barmeyoldbat Mon 29-Jun-20 10:02:00

We have been watching it, I don't want to watch any more episodes but Mr Barmey wants to stick with it. Me, I find it confusing with these flash backs and the story is a bit slow.

Atqui Mon 29-Jun-20 09:55:33

H described it as a load of “drivel”. I wouldn’t say that but agree it is hard to follow especially the bits in the dark! It’s also difficult to fathom who the various men are.I shall continue watching it while H falls asleep as there’s nothing else on a Sunday night.Come back Poldark and Downton!

seacliff Sat 27-Jun-20 19:49:16

I am on the 3rd episode, and it is still so confusing I think I'll give up. Shame because the idea of a story set in those times in New Zealand appeals. It is just so hard to follow, especially all the mystic stuff.

lemongrove Fri 26-Jun-20 21:34:10

The start of the book is nothing like the series.
It starts on board the boat, but there is what appears to be the ghost of a murdered man with blood pouring from him, down in the hold ( in the book.)
Can’t say more without spoiling the story. The series has changed things around quite a bit to suit itself, but isn’t bad, just a tad confusing for anyone who doesn’t know the story.
Acting and dialogue are good.

trisher Fri 26-Jun-20 20:34:10

I found t hard to follow and very dark but the sheer unlikelihood was what really got me. She arrived on a boat apparently without making contact with anyone until she saw a man laid on the deck. What????!!! During a long voyage she would have been forced into close contact with a great many people and some of them would have wanted to keep contact with her, if only because she was a woman and there was a shortage of women.

GardenerGran Fri 26-Jun-20 20:24:47

I’ve read the book, it was a bit of a challenge, I found it quite hard to follow and difficult to identify the many characters but I have to say it stayed with me, you know how some books do. I was surprised to see it adapted for tv to only 6 episodes for such a huge book. I’ve watched the first episode but told my OH not to bother has he hasn’t got the level of concentration needed and would be continually asking me who was who and it drives me nuts. I think it would be hard to follow if you haven’t read the book. Will watch the next episodes on iPlayer But may not stick with it the whole,way...

annodomini Tue 23-Jun-20 10:33:31

Rubysong, I mentioned up-thread that I had tried to read it but given up. I doubt if it becomes more inspiring by adaptation to the small screen.

BlueBelle Tue 23-Jun-20 10:23:04

I don’t usually mind flashbacks but this is like major flipping
I m getting seasick I think I ll watch it all in one go I might get better continuity
I m quite muddled as to whether people are alive /dead in prison / out of prison Not done themselves any favours here unless the book was a flip flopper too

travelsafar Tue 23-Jun-20 10:16:34

I turned the first showing off after about 10 mins, just didnt grab me.
