Did anyone enjoy this- I really did - didn't nod off at all?

Grammaretto Mon 17-Aug-20 18:21:51

I am sorry you find it boring!
If anything it reminds me of a Jane Austen production but set in the dazzling , rich landscape of India with a background of political tension.
I'm still loving it.
Who will she choose? I am developing a fondness for the shoemaker who learned his trade in Northhampton......

Maybe that’s it I found Jane Austins Pride and Prejudice a bit boring too
I m at the point where the characters are so unbelievable I don’t really care who she marries or if she stays single
But I do love the atmosphere and colours and can nearly smell the smells
I don’t know who all the male characters are either They seem interchangeable

Like luckygirl, I never managed to get through the book, and am really enjoying it.

In many ways, it reminds me of what both my parents and my parents in law went through- in the 40s. For my parents, rich girl divorced one child, Protestant, and poor boy, Catholic.

I’m really enjoying it and like Grammaretto am beginning to root for the shoemaker. I doubt that there will be a happy ever after for Maan and Saeeda but hope that I’m wrong.

I have a copy of the book waiting to be read but I think that I will save it until the series ends.

Grammaretto Mon 17-Aug-20 18:42:56

Ooh Biba when is the book coming out? wink
My parents had similar obstacles. My mum could never convince her protestant in-laws that she wasn't an evil Catholic witch! This continued until my DF died and they were together in grief.

biba70 Mon 17-Aug-20 18:45:14

My In-Laws was even more difficult and amazing- there is an amazing book to be written there- but must wait for those from that generation to go- too sensitive.

I do wanted to enjoy this but sadly have up halfway through the third episode. I don't find some of the characters believable especially the two younger main ones , and I don't like for mother or sister either.

I find it hard to believe that the screenplay was written by the same Andrew Davies who did Les Miserables. I just looked it up to double check.

I’m enjoying both the series and the book (on the Kindle).

I’m rather fond of Bollywood style, not that I’d really put this into that category. When we lived in Oman and it was too hot in high summer even to go to the pool until about 5 pm, there was always an Indian film on TV on Friday (their Sunday) afternoons. Always lots of singing and dancing, and poor downtrodden boy/girl ends up marrying rich, good looking girl/boy.
Not unlike Catherine Cookson stories, in fact, but a lot more colourful!

It’s starting to grow on me. I love the shoe man. C’mon Lata...see beyond the looks. He’s the good guy and I’m gunning for him.

EllanVannin Wed 19-Aug-20 12:36:56

I'm really enjoying it, then I love Bollywood. The vibrance, scenery, colour and music and of course the beauty of its people.

Grammaretto Tue 25-Aug-20 09:48:18

So what did you all think? I loved it.
All those unlikely twists at the end and the breathtaking images continued all the way through. Lata's smile from the train.....
We need a sequel.
Thank you BBC.

merlotgran Tue 25-Aug-20 09:56:52

I loved the ending as well. The courtroom scene was a little cheesy but it was always going to end well.

Lata chose the right man.

pollyperkins Tue 25-Aug-20 10:08:34

Yes I agree. In the penultumate episode everything seemed to be going wrong for just about everyone, but it all ended well and I was rooting for the shoemaker in the end too. Latas mum did remind me of Mrs Bennett!

EllanVannin Tue 25-Aug-20 10:09:06

I really enjoyed the series it made a refreshing change and I'll miss it.

Jane10 Tue 25-Aug-20 10:56:06

Gosh. I was really surprised that she didn't somehow go for the Muslim boy (can't remember his name). The shoemaker was a real trier and I wondered what would happen to him but, no chemistry there at all.
Enjoyed the series though. I recommend 'Indian Matchmaking' on Netflix. Fascinating documentary series.

maddyone Tue 25-Aug-20 11:00:28

I didn’t like the shoemaker, there didn’t seem to be chemistry between them, and in the end she settled for her mother’s choice, a rather boring but solid young man. I was hoping she’d go for her real love, the Muslim (can’t remember his name.)
A disappointing ending.

Alegrias Tue 25-Aug-20 11:19:06

I enjoyed the series, it was lovely to look at, but I felt it was all a bit "soapy" and contrived in the end. I liked the shoemaker best though smile
I haven't read the book and I wondered if it was just too much to try to get 800 pages into 6 hours?

gillgran Tue 25-Aug-20 11:21:37

Finally, in these last 2 episodes, I just about worked out who was who.!!

Really enjoyed it in the end, ( now want another series, was Lata's mother hinting at "A Suitable Girl" for her youngest son? )

Alegrias Tue 25-Aug-20 11:25:44

Oops - I underestimated. Apparently its 1,400 pages!

MayBee70 Tue 25-Aug-20 12:31:46

SPOILER ALERT: Well, I’ve now got to rewatch it properly. Serves me right for being sniffy about it at the start. I ended up loving it. The minute the shoemaker appeared I saw the humour that was in the series: till then I just thought it was meant to be terribly serious and political. And the minute he walked away from his first job on principle I realised he was the good guy. I may buy the book: doubt if I’ll read it as I struggle to finish even the shortest book these days, but just to dip in and get a flavour of it. I’m thinking it’s probably written in a Captain Corelli Mandolin sort of way ie showing the story from each characters perspective and I loved that book. I really wasn’t expecting the ending, though. For some reason I kept thinking she’d end up meeting and falling in love with the one who ended up in prison. Apologies to Andrew Davies as well: it must have been a devil of a job compressing the book into 6 episodes. Mind you, I still haven’t fathomed out who everybody is.....

pollyperkins Tue 25-Aug-20 13:58:03

It was only at the end that I realised that the unkind & snobby man was Lata’s brother.

merlotgran Tue 25-Aug-20 14:03:44

I watched the last two episodes with Luckygirl's family tree open on my laptop. I still had problems working out the relationships though.

Esspee Tue 25-Aug-20 14:08:49

MayBee70 It was her brother who ended up in prison, wasn’t it?

rockgran Tue 25-Aug-20 14:10:39

I loved it and was so glad she went for the shoemaker. Lust can fade but friendship might endure. The photograhy was brilliant and not a shaky camera to be seen. I'm really sad to lose it!
