I found Lara’s thread very useful and it was very popular so, as Lara hasn’t started a new thread I have.

Any suggestions on what to watch tonight gransnetters?

I enjoyed All Creatures but Mrs Hall seemed very young, although I quite liked the character.
It's a good idea to record it, we'll do that.

I agree about Mrs. Hall. I don't remember her being such an important character.

Maggiemaybe Tue 01-Sept-20 22:52:56

I enjoyed it too, but yes, it’s definitely Sunday evening viewing! I think we’ll record it in future to skip the adverts. Maybe watch it on Sunday evenings. hmm

Furret Tue 01-Sept-20 22:44:59

Enjoyed All Creatures. Nice relaxing Sunday-night viewing on a Tuesday.

Deedaa Tue 01-Sept-20 22:37:04

Have to admit I was a bit disappointed with All Creatures. I wondered if the writer had read the same books as me, Mrs Hall is suddenly 21st century psychoanalyst instead ofmiddle aged 1930s housekeeper. I'll stick with it for a while because the cast is good.

We enjoyed it, Jane10. Sam West has a hard act to follow but he's doing a good job.

I've recorded it Merlotgran. I loved the books. Not so keen on Christopher Timothy but Robert Hardy was great as Siegfried. I'm looking forward to the new series.

'Mama Mia' was a load of tripe so we turned it off after about ten minutes.

Looking forward to the new 'All Creatures Great and Small' tonight on Channel 5. I think Sam West will do a good job as Siegfried Farnon and I loved Callum Woodhouse in 'The Durrells' so I think he'll make a great Tristan.

Is there? Ooh must find it. I only look at a few threads...too busy in the garden to trawl through them all!

Marmight

Well, apparently at 10pm on Channel 4 tonight, there’s a programme devoted entirely to men's ‘bits’ (in the upright position no less) blush. I’m usually nodding off by 10, but perhaps this may make me sit up and take notice. grin Whatever next. Is nothing sacred?

I haven’t watched Strike. I shared a room at school with his (Tom Burke‘s) Mum and Aunt for a year so perhaps I should give it a go. I liked him in The Musketeers.

Already a thread devoted to the ‘men’s bits’!

Would rather have shared a room with Tom Burke himself!

‘The Day of the Jackal’ -what a good film, although looks a bit dated now.
I always hope somehow he will succeed, wrong I know.

Never watched the re-make with Bruce Willis, I am sure it wouldn’t be a patch on the original.

eazybee Mon 31-Aug-20 11:57:27

I discovered 'The Day of the Jackal' and thoroughly enjoyed it; a very dashing Edward Fox and many stalwart British actors, sadly many now dead. Then on to 'Srike', an unexpected treat: something new, and good!

If I can twist DH's arm we'll watch Mama Mia - Here we go again. He's not a fan of fluffy musicals but at least it's not doom and gloom for a change.

annodomini Mon 31-Aug-20 11:23:12

Got to the end of season 2 of New Amsterdam - a hospital series on Prime, very hard-hitting against the US system of medical insurance and supportive of those who slip through the net. The recording of the series was interrupted by the pandemic, and one of the new characters was himself affected, though survived.

I watched Strike last night, and will watch again tonight.
We watched Line of Duty, series one when it was shown a couple of weeks ago, and have started to watch series two now on BBC iPlayer.

TerriBull Mon 31-Aug-20 09:58:27

Hope not Calandargirl blush I think it's been evident for some time there is a definite frisson between Strike and Robin and her relationship with the newly acquired husband has been heading for the rocks for a while. Anyway the dynamics of those relationships are merely a backdrop to the main plot.

Funnygran Mon 31-Aug-20 09:54:40

Watched Strike too after enjoying the first series. DH said it was in danger of turning into a ‘woman’s series’ ie too much emphasis on relationships! We’re well into Ozark on Netflix after a friend recommended it. Violent in places but strangely gripping. Was getting sick of the repeats on the main channels. I read something about the Walter Presents series on Channel 4 and they reckoned we should be looking at some of the Belgian dramas.

and the breakdown of her marriage

Oh TerriBull, hope you haven’t given the game away!

TerriBull Mon 31-Aug-20 09:35:01

having only meant to say that once.

TerriBull Mon 31-Aug-20 09:33:38

We watched Strike last night having both of us having read the book but forgotten a lot of it other than Robin's wedding and the breakdown of her marriage. Other than that am watching "This is Us" on Amazon Prime.

travelsafar Mon 31-Aug-20 08:51:43

I watched a really old film on Prime called Life with Father. It was made in 1947 but is in colour. It is set in the 1800's and all about the life of a family with a stern, or tries to be stern, father. Parts of it are very funny, well it had me chuckling anyway. smile

Calendargirl Mon 31-Aug-20 08:27:34

I read ‘Lethal White’, the latest Strike, in Lockdown, a long book, and it made me realise how much they have to condense it to get a 4 part tv series.

They have to miss certain parts out, and improvise others, e.g. the first chapter of the book was devoted to Robin’s wedding day, after she said ‘I Do’, and soooo much was skipped over last night, which really set the scene for ‘One Year Later’.

BBbevan Mon 31-Aug-20 06:05:16

Caught up with 2nd series of The Bridge last evening. Has anyone watched Ticker Than Water on All4 . A Swedish series Interesting . .
We will watch Strike tonight

Eloethan Sun 30-Aug-20 23:31:47

I watched Strike. I like the two main characters but I don't find the plots particularly believable or interesting.
