I joined netflix to watch the queen and kept it through lockdown but I decided enough was enough, there has been nothing I wanted to watch on netflix for weeks. M and H signing up was the last straw, I have cancelled. It will most definitely not be missed

We are thinking of ceasing paying for the licence fee for many reasons, also cancelling the sky subscription and just sticking with Netflix, amazon prime and 'ordinary' channels such as ITV. I'm not a huge watcher of TV but OH is. However we have discovered the catch up of Outlander on Amazon and have been binge watching that - how steamy is that!

I thought you have to have a tv licence if you watch or record programmes from any channel not just BBC.

Now TV is my choice although I’ve just cancelled it to save money after watching GOT. I have Prime but rarely use it as very little appeals to me. I only have it because of the Fire stick and I shop on Amazon.

I do a number of crafty/sewing things and with no car and Covid getting to fabric shops has not been a goer, thus resorting to Amazon far more than I would like. I also use Prime books as Borrow Box via the library does not allow search by author.

It’s very much swings and roundabouts for me. It’s so easy to get sucked into more and more stuff.

Netflix have just commissioned loads of new shows - documentaries, serials, films so the coming months they should be showing a lot of new stuff. I was glued to the 3 part documentary 'Don't f* with Cats" It was brilliant.

I regard the £5.99 a month that I pay for Netflix as good value. Films, series, documentaries, many of them are excellent.
I always know when new things are coming as they send me notifications on my phone.
It's been particularly helpful this year in getting me get through the lockdown. It doesn't mean I'm glued to it, nor need to "get a life". I do lots of other things. It's just there when I want to watch it.

How do you use your DS's or DD's accounts?

grannygranby Tue 08-Sept-20 09:56:57

What’s good about streaming channels is they come to know what you will like. You can override that any time. And if you feel jaded by the offerings it is so easy to cancel and so easy to resubscribe. And I like amazon prime too because you can easily add on something like curzon cinema and watch the latest releases no subscription you just pay at the door.. just watched Hope Gap. Stunning. (Latest movie with Bill Nighy about the emotional highs and lows of leaving your wife of 38 years)
Though sometimes when you’re tired the set menu of broadcast tv just has to do ... I guess the meaning behind the op post is that now Harry and Megan have made a multi million deal to make programs with and for Netflix she will refuse to support them. It was nearly with walt Disney they all want s slice and we will have the choice of watching or not when the series are made. I think a lot of people feel unjustly rejected by them. The proof will be in the pudding whether Megan fulfils her early promise of progressive change or just seems overly entitled.

I have been searching for My Brilliant Friend on various sites. Thanks Mcbab. Read all 4 Ellene Ferrante Naples books.

Kartush Tue 08-Sept-20 09:54:20

I wish i had your netflix, the aussie one isnt anywhere as good.
I dont watch it alot but the few things i do watch makes the cost worth while.

Mcbab Tue 08-Sept-20 09:47:36

I have had Netflix for years and often struggle to find something interesting to watch. I have now signed up to Now TV after seeing what is available on it when visiting my daughter. It is brilliant! Succession, The Affair, My Brilliant Friend to mention but a few.

^There’s more things to do in life than sit in front of the tv.^

That's a bit of a high handed comment!

Many elderly and disabled people rely on the TV for company and entertainment.

During Lockdown more things to do was impossible for some. No wonder subscriptions to Netflix soared.

Exactly Merlotgran good job we are all different, wouldn't it be a boring world if we were all the same?

krazykat Tue 08-Sept-20 09:43:18

Netflix is the only 'tv' type thing that I have.
I dont own a television through choice and watch netflix on my laptop.
I can just pick or choose a film/series as I wish.

jenwren Tue 08-Sept-20 09:42:44

We use sons Netflix account to find a good film and during lockdown had found some good ones. My tv package is with Talktalk and recently they have put on a new app on 'Films' which we have found to be good.

There’s more things to do in life than sit in front of the tv. I would never subscribe to anything like Netflix. My son is a dubbing mixer for Sky and gets the entire package of Sky for free. He enables my devices to watch Sky Movies which I use two maybe three times a year. I think they are all rip offs full of adverts. I don’t think you should have to pay for any of them.

Vegansrock If you watched Fauda and Unorthodox you might enjoy Shtisel. That’s on Netflix too.

BarbieB Tue 08-Sept-20 09:30:18

We love Netflix, have just finished watching Money Heist. It was excellent!

jaylucy Tue 08-Sept-20 09:29:54

I also don't understand why the thought of H&M signing up to Netflix would make anyone cancel. If they were going to be in a programme on BBC1 would you cancel your TV licence?
What have H&M done to you personally that makes you be so petty?
Netflix is like every other TV channel - you choose to watch it or not and there is an off switch !
If I had that attitude over Boris I would watch no TV at all !

Shortlegs Tue 08-Sept-20 09:29:15

Not quite sure why a Netflix cancellation requires a public announcement.

Greeneyedgirl Tue 08-Sept-20 09:17:40

Thank you Gagajo that’s really helpful, will have a look. This is one of the reasons I love GN.

We have both NetFlix and Prime and to be honest i am happy to pay for them both. Prime has a lot of really old style programs and films which i enjoy from time to time and Netlfix has more up to date ones. With winter on it's way i will appreciate both so i have plenty of choice.

craftyone Tue 08-Sept-20 06:35:00

Yes add it all together and it can make the mind boggle rosecarmel. I moved 17 months ago and seriously depleted my savings, no extra earnings on a fixed income. I need to attempt to replenish savings so a bit here and a bit there really does help. I have very many good dvds and a good blue ray player. I will have plenty to watch over winter.

I'm another who canceled Netflix and Amazon Prime-

I canceled Netflix after they changed their user interface- I could not get on board with being forced to watch previews while browsing- When I called them to inquire if members could disable the previews I was told no, so I canceled-

Not only that, they kept raising the their membership fees-

I canceled Amazon Prime after the holidays because I cannot stand the fact that they do not monitor the garbage being sold on their site from China, they do not make clear in the listings that items are being purchased from overseas- And they are a shady company- Period-

If I were to tell my 18 year old self that in the future people would pay what people pay to "watch tv" I wouldn't believe me-

Internet provider: $90 per month

Cable Tv: $100+ per month

Amazon Prime: $100+ yearly

Then add Netflix and Hulu and Disney monthly memberships-And all the other cable type channels ..

I'd of told my future self I was nuts!

Roku, VUDU, Hoopla, Youtube, Pluto all offer free movies-
Movies can be borrowed from the libraries as can tv shows on DVD-

We miss going to the cinema to see mainly art house films, so joined Netflix 3 months ago and have watched one film Two Popes, gave up on another two, and not interested in TV series or the Royals, so can’t find anything else. We were hoping for more quality international films, so are disappointed. Any suggestions?
Will probably cancel.

Try bflix.to. Free site. They do have some unusual films. I was searching for a Japanese film I started watching on a flight years ago and found it on there.

Cheers, Daddima. I'm still thinking about it.
