At last a Sunday night drama to look forward to. After the lack luster "Luminaries" and slightly dreary at times "A Suitable Boy" "Us" kicked off well straight away for me. David Nicholls books are equally good on the screen as they are to read. I liked the switch between the early developing relationship of the couple and the present time. Tom Hollander, is always great imo, and does world weary very well.

I have read the book of "Us" and enjoyed it; like most of the book-readers here, I'm also enjoying the TV version. It's not high drama, but the characters are well drawn and acted, and the conversations and situations quite true to life. It's quite undemanding in that there's only a small cast and it's easy to follow but entertaining - just what I need sometimes, especially these days. It's all available on iPlayer now, but I've only seen the first episode.

I have watched them all on iplayer and it was excellent.

All the characters in it were extremely annoying and unlikeable and the plot was dire. I won't be watching again next week.

Update on “Us”. I thought it would be rather cheesy and it is a bit, but i’m quite enjoying it, to my surprise. I’ve even watched episode 2 which has yet to be aired, but available on i player.

We both watched it, well I saw some it as I kept falling asleep. I thought the acting was wooden and after watching The Bridge with its brilliant acting and facial expressions I am afraid US was a come down.

Warnings!

I too have watched it all on catch-up and gradually the appeal for me dawned on me.

Hollander's character is so like my OH, who was also a scientist/doctor with that slightly rigid measured approach to life - a bit lacking in spontaneity and wanting everything done by the book. He was also a very anxious man who would issue dire earnings to us all at every turn. Above all else, he also had an off-the-wall wit and humour, making subtle jokes that seemed to come from left-field.

But, unlike the Hollander character, he was a warm and loving father, always praising the girls and boosting their confidence.

Ihave watched the whole thing on catch up and to be honest it could have been condensed down to 2 episodes. Parts of it were very predictable and not something i would have rushed to watch if i had known.

Saw the first episode on catch-up today and thought it was excellent.

I loved it too. Husband enjoyed it too. I’ve read the book and think they did it well (so far anyway.) Enjoyed the humour as well as the pathos.

I felt really sorry for the geeky husband. Made me laugh when he was counting his steps. My DH does this, he has to get 12,000 in every day or he's not happy! It was quite watchable but I didn't love it.

I nearly didn't watch but couldn't resist the lure of Tom Hollander. I loved it and found the hour passed very quickly. As DD is a biochemist and a lot of the family are arty there was just so much to relate to. Loved his lecture on "chemicals" and her trying to explain why they really didn't need to see the Mona Lisa just because they were in the Louvre. Been there, had all those arguments with people.

I enjoyed it, it seems just right for a Sunday evening. If I remember correctly, I wasn't keen on the wife in the book either, Millie22.

I quite enjoyed it. DH didn't as he said it wasn't funny. I wasn't aware it was meant to be and I feel he maybe recognised himself a bit in it.

Sparklefizz Mon 21-Sept-20 16:44:39

True to the book and I'm loving it.

I found it a bit boring at first but then got caught up in the story. Tom Hollander portrayed the character well I thought.
I'm looking forward to Amsterdam next week as well gulligranny

We both really enjoyed Us and will continue to watch it. Well acted and true to the book, which I also enjoyed. Lovely locations too, looking forward to seeing Amsterdam next week.

Millie22 Mon 21-Sept-20 13:59:55

I found it all a bit strange and the bit in the restaurant was unkind. It may improve next week but just now I'm not very keen on the wife.

fevertree Mon 21-Sept-20 13:57:17

Us was soooo boring. It made me decide to leave too! grin (the programme, not my husband).

Pittcity Mon 21-Sept-20 13:36:21

We did a Gap Year of travel in the year before our son left home. We didn't take him with us though....

trisher Mon 21-Sept-20 13:32:55

I enjoyed it and I think there are secrets to be revealed. Only trouble was I couldn't imagine who would want to leave Tom Hollander (even if he was a bit nerdy)!

flopen Mon 21-Sept-20 11:35:42

pantglas the same happened to me. Mind you, left to myself, I gave up pretty soon, as it was so dull (and I like Tom Hollander)

honeyrose Mon 21-Sept-20 11:24:21

Ah Singapore GRIP not Singapore SLING!! Thanks, Calendargirl. I knew it wasn’t quite right when I typed it, but couldn’t be bothered to check my facts (which I normally try to do). Sorry everyone!

Duh - if I'd read the title properly I'd have known its BBC1. Another reason for the need for an edit button. I belong to a group that gives you 15 mins to edit your post (stops people changing a nasty remark days later etc) which is useful.

ExD Mon 21-Sept-20 10:47:26

I had an aunt who was actually in Singapore at the time. From what she told me I think its quite true to life. They were vapid idiots who were making pots of money at the expense of the native population, and they were caught unaware by the invasion. They even spoke in that odd clipped colonial fashion (she said things like "toodle pip" and "ac emma" all her life) and I'm finding it fascinating.
However its a tongue in cheek poke at the times, not a serious true to life docu-soap.
I wish I'd caught US - which channel was it on? I'll try to catch up so I can remember to watch next week's episode.
