We used to have the DDODS and Upstairs, Downstairs, on VHS videos - I used to take them to my mother, who loved them.
All our old videos - a lot - were got rid of years ago, and alas I only recently found out that an elderly neighbour who likes the golden oldies, still uses them. She offered me Casablanca and Brief Encounter - I had to tell her I had nothing to play them on any more.

This was one of my grandmother’s favourite programmes, though she enjoyed the narrative, she mainly loved to watch Gemma Jones in the kitchen, cooking!

Witzend, I took a month’s free trial of Britbox specifically to watch Upstairs Downstairs, but I’ve kept it for other things, like Yes Minister and The Good Life. It’s only £5.99.

Gemma Jones who plays Louisa is 78y old now. She also played Pamela, the mother of Bridget Jones (Diary fame). She’s a very talented actor.

Why do I still want to say actress?
There’s no hope for me, trying to keep up these days.

She was SO pretty. It took me a while to get used to her accent.

It's funny. When I was young and watched it, I liked the romance between her and Charly best. Now, I am like Lexisgranny's grandma and like seeing Louisa cook better.

Daddima - I have had Britbox since it first started. I love it. I have just found a lovely film called The Woodlanders, based on a Thomas Hardy story, and starring Rufus Sewell. Have a box of tissues handy!

Just a word of warning I was fiddling about trying to put on full screen and then I must have touched the wrong icon and suddenly the screen changed to a lesbian sex cartoon and then as I tried to get out of it a woman with pumped up lips and little clothing came on. I’m not joking, not my cup of tea ?

I watched the first episode then a warning of 'unsafe content' came up and it was blocked.

That is really odd Shysal. I have never had that and have watched on a laptop, my phone and an iPad. Weird.

I have decided it will be much simpler to buy a set of pre-owned DVDs from Ebay, so I have bought the cheapest I could find. They can then be passed around friends and family when I have watched them. DD had never seen Downton Abbey so I bought a set for her birthday and she is hooked and loving it.

@Urmstongran, I always want to say actress, too, and often do. I can’t for the life of me see what’s wrong with it.
To insist that the female version of the word can’t be used, suggests that it’s somehow inferior to the male version. And by association, that a woman who acts is inferior to a man who acts.
What is remotely feminist about that?

It’s all PC now though isn’t it?

Thanks to reading about it here I've spent today watching the first 5 epis of this - it came up on Google Play, so that's the next 2 days viewing too. Loving it!

On the Bflix site I saw a film called Harry and Meghan- Becoming Royal. I only watched bits of it, but definitely the best ‘lookalike’ actors, especially Prince George and Meghan. So much so, I’m not convinced it wasn’t her!

I’m up to Episode 8. Will be watching it tonight (again!).
Here is Gemma Jones nowadays in her late 70’s.
I loved her hairstyles in the series. Probably a wig, what do you think?

I'm on 12 now. I prefer the episodes with Louisa front and centre. I'm less interested in the others.
