Anyone else think this was an irritating bag of tripe? Northerners portrayed as a bunch of losers. Totally silly storyline. Well that’s an hour of my life I won’t get back again!

I feel much the same Calendargirl I hoped it would improve as it went along but last night's episode was poor. Agree about the outcome.

Calendargirl Wed 21-Apr-21 07:19:49

I’m still watching this, probably because there’s not much else on a Tuesday.

Will stick it out, but find the characters unappealing, Neil Morrissey looks quite seedy somehow.

Can predict the end, after various twists and turns, they will of course get their share of the lottery, and use some of the proceeds to buy the kennels, turning them into super-duper luxury ones.

I am feeling a bit annoyed/frustrated/bored having watched the last episode. Of course it's meant to be a bit of light hearted fluff, but I'm not loving it, not sure quite why.

I enjoyed the first episode but this week's was not so good. I thought some countries required a dog to have had rabies vaccine 30 days before travelling from abroad. Duke clearly hasn't had the time to have had that.

Ellianne Wed 07-Apr-21 09:26:28

The dogs stole the show. Duke is hilarious, on his sun lounger indeed!
My heart was in my mouth for the little dachshund.

The whole thing is stupidly unreal, but I don't think it is meant to be in any way deep or accurate.

Calendargirl Wed 07-Apr-21 07:20:49

Watched episode 2.

Don’t think Kay Mellor did much research into buying property in Monaco. I watched a documentary about the principality recently, and even if you have plenty of money, it seems that Prince Albert has to approve all new purchasers wishing to make their home there.

Perhaps Frank would be welcome, as his £27,000,000 will boost the casinos profits.

I think I saw all of five minutes as I couldn't bear the shrieking any longer. I'm allergic to shrieking.

Yes its lighthearted and just watchable. Cant believe they haven't rung Camelot which is the first thing you would do!

Years ago mum was friendly with a lady whose son ran a newsagent, surprisingly (not) he and his family members had 4 or 5 numbers regularly, mum always thought he was up to no good. His mum said he was lucky! On another occasion the lady who did our work syndicate said we had 4 numbers (we did) and had won around £100. However when she went to cash the ticket the newsagent told her she had 3 numbers only and was about to give her £10. She told him he was mistaken and asked for ticket back. He quickly said he had read it wrong and paid up. She never went in there again.

Surely light entertainment should entertain, I didn’t laugh I didn’t cry I didn’t feel anything for any of the characters
Perhaps I ll eat my words and end up liking it but I ll be surprised All my friends thought it was awful

There was a real life story about 5 years ago. An elderly couple had been away on holiday and didn’t check their ticket. Returned home the following week and asked their local shopkeeper to check it in the machine. He told them they were unlucky then claimed the jackpot ticket as his own.

Camelot became suspicious because he was a shopkeeper and told them he’d bought it in his own shop.

Camelot were able to trace the ticket purchase to a local Tesco Metro and confirmed the elderly lady by time of purchase, bank card transaction and Tesco cctv footage. She eventually got her £1 million and the shop keeper was jailed.

HurdyGurdy Wed 31-Mar-21 22:35:26

When I used to buy paper tickets for our work lottery syndicate (do it online now) there is a space on the back of the tickets for you to write your name so that you can in some small way prove that it is your ticket. Presumably the newsagent had to hand the winning ticket over to the lottery company employee, so if it had had "the XXX dog kennels lottery syndicate" written on it, questions would have been asked. Of course, that's real life and it wouldn't have made much of a storyline for the TV programme wink

I have enjoyed all The Syndicate series, but I'm easily pleased, and I enjoyed the first episode of this series. It's easy to watch and a bit of flimflam that doesn't request much attention. The first episode of any series is spent setting out the characters and their various situations, and the story doesn't really get going until episode 2.

And yes, that dog is cute grin - worth watching for him alone!

Grannynannywanny Wed 31-Mar-21 22:24:34

I enjoyed it and will stick with it to see how the story unfolds.

This scenario of a shop assistant being asked to check the lotto ticket numbers, telling the customer it wasn’t a winner and then claiming the jackpot has happened a few times in real life.

I was thinking about a case I’d read a few years ago and a quick google brought up the story and a few other similar cases which resulted in prosecution.

seacliff Wed 31-Mar-21 21:48:12

I too enjoyed it, as a bit of light hearted entertainment.

Bobbysgirl19 Wed 31-Mar-21 21:32:34

I enjoyed it too, a bit of light entertainment lol. Good job we don’t all like the same thing!

tattynan Wed 31-Mar-21 18:38:58

I enjoyed it and tuned in knowing it was going to be light entertainment and a bit of fun. Nice to see Kim Marsh in an acting role and I’ve liked Mark Benton ever since first seeing him in Early Doors.

Eloethan Wed 31-Mar-21 17:07:22

I found it enjoyable. It wasn't meant to be War & Peace - just a bit of light entertainment.

I didn't think the characters were portraying Northerners as being a " bunch of losers". The employment setting of the main characters was a dog kennels where the employees would have been on minimum wages. There are plenty of people in the UK who are on minimum wages and it doesn't make them "losers".

Ellianne Wed 31-Mar-21 16:19:36

It could have been worse. At least the dogs were good and I'm hoping to see more of Monte Carlo next week!

JenniferEccles Wed 31-Mar-21 14:44:01

Oh wasn’t that what happened when the newsagent met a lottery woman sitting at a table outside where she went through the questions about publicity and financial advice ?

Yes I think poetic licence goes on a lot in many tv dramas, even in the much praised The Terror with the fictitious violent beast !

hulahoop Wed 31-Mar-21 13:58:58

A bit of light entertainment Kay Mellor is from Leeds area I think .

Charleygirl5 Wed 31-Mar-21 13:57:46

JenniferEccles no it is not. If one wins that amount somebody is personally knocking on your door asking if you want to go public or want financial advice. I suppose there has to be some poetic licence.

JenniferEccles Wed 31-Mar-21 13:48:21

Oh it’s a shame some of you thought it was rubbish as I quite enjoyed it!

Aren’t Kay Mellor’s characters in the Syndicate series always portrayed as impoverished folk to emphasise the huge impact that a big lottery win would have on their lives?

Are they always set up north? I can’t remember but maybe that’s where Kay Mellor hails from so writes about what she knows.

I never buy lottery tickets so I don’t know enough about them to know whether it would have been possible for the newsagent to do what he did.

I will stick with it I think.

henetha Wed 31-Mar-21 13:18:27

It might be tripe, but I thought it was an entertaining and light hearted bit of tripe and thoroughly enjoyed it as such.

JessK Wed 31-Mar-21 12:04:15

Shows how much attention I was paying to it Calendergirl. It was indeed on BBC.

Calendargirl Wed 31-Mar-21 10:31:18

Going back to Neil Morrisey. Saw him once being interviewed by Piers Morgan.

He sounded to have a rough childhood, then it went on to talk about his love life, about his conquests, one being Amanda Houlden. Piers revealed that Amanda had said at the time he was a great kisser!

Mmm, can well believe that!

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️???

Calendargirl Wed 31-Mar-21 10:26:30

Watched until the first advert break, then turned it over to ITV
