Savvy

I haven't seen it as I don't have television, but it does make me wonder what the police have gotten away with in the past, before people were able to film things with their mobile phones.

Even with footage justice isn’t always served. Look at the Rodney King outcome as an example of that.

I’m interested to see how harshly Chauvin will be sentenced. That’s when the real indicator of how seriously the American justice system is actually taking this will be shown.

I mean the officers who shot and killed Breonna Taylor weren’t even charged for her murder - one of them did get into bother for a stray bullet going into the neighbouring house though.

The whole situation is vile.

I agree with your last post Savvy. Too often there hasn't been provable eye witness accounts on the scene. The footage showing George Floyd unable to breathe with other police just standing by was terrible. He was handcuffed and on the ground. Several police officers around him. There couldn't have been any need to kneel on him at all, let alone in such a dangerous way. He couldn't have been a threat to anybody.

Good news for once thank goodness.
The person who filmed the death said that they wished that they had helped George instead of filming. I think that they wouldn’t have been able to stop George’s death but having the film has brought justest

It seemed wrong having the eyes of the world on him as the verdict was announced: I felt uncomfortable with that. Until I watched the footage of what he had done that is.

I don’t agree with televised/filmed trials at all ( except Nuremberg)

That's what's new Alegrias1, anyone in the world with a phone with a camera can now record incidents they are too scared to intervene in, but want the world to know it is happening, and it is wrong. The other police present should have stopped him, surely they weren't fearful he'd shoot them.

MayBee70 Tue 20-Apr-21 23:09:37

I can’t believe that the poor mans first reaction to the police was ‘don’t shoot me’. Can’t imagine a society where someone would think that someone was going to do that.

Alegrias1 Tue 20-Apr-21 23:04:14

I felt grateful for those young people who filmed it, and the people who tried to intervene. That was brave.

Have just watched Chauvin as the verdicts were read out, his eyes, I just found his whole demeanour really chilling....

Good job Minnesota doesn’t have the death penalty too. That’s the next thing that needs to go in other states.

PippaZ Tue 20-Apr-21 22:45:55

Thank you MayBee.

Casdon Tue 20-Apr-21 22:43:31

Justice was done. It’s a good job it was filmed. With the filming, I do feel for his family though, I hope they haven’t watched it.

This is a great step forward and I hope it brings changes. Could I ask if the OP could ask GNHQ to change the title from "result" to "verdict"?

Will do....

Shandy57 Tue 20-Apr-21 22:42:18

Thank you, I hadn't realised it would be decided tonight. It is terrifying to think what happens behind closed doors out of the public eye.

Shinamae Tue 20-Apr-21 22:41:00

Absolutely the right verdict...

EllanVannin Tue 20-Apr-21 22:40:40

OP posted the thread while the results of the charges were being read out before the final verdict, hence the word result.

Gannygangan Tue 20-Apr-21 22:39:33

Excellent news. Let's hope he's put away for life. Actual life.

SueDonim Tue 20-Apr-21 22:36:39

Let’s hope this is a watershed moment for America.

Justice is done.

Mr Chauvin showed little emotion as the verdict was read out in the courtroom in downtown Minneapolis. His sentence will be determined in eight weeks.

Returnofthemc Tue 20-Apr-21 22:23:39

I agree that the footage was absolutely horrific, I had to look away
Derek Chauvin's behaviour was beyond disgraceful
I have to wonder if the officers who stood by and did nothing to allieviate the plight of poor George will also face charges. They should

EllanVannin Tue 20-Apr-21 22:20:40

It had to be the right decision. This sort of treatment is inhumane. Let it also be a lesson here too !
I couldn't watch it again.
