TV tonight: Lily James and Dominic West star in The Pursuit of Love .......... Emily Mortimer's adaptation of Nancy Mitford's tale of love and passion between the wars begins.

Sorry...I haven’t trawled through nine pages of posts, but started watching this last night. Got about ten minutes in, and couldn’t stand it any longer.
To say it irritated me beyond words is an understatement!

trisher Tue 18-May-21 11:32:24

And I really wish Linda and Fanny would stop pawing each other.
Just goes to show that no matter how many hints you drop (and some of them are very broad) some people just won't get it!!!

Casdon Tue 18-May-21 11:26:06

You only have to read this whole trail to get the picture I think Beswitched. It’s like Marmite, you either love it or hate it, views are in about equal measure!

Beswitched Tue 18-May-21 11:23:13

I'm curious about the warm reviews it's getting in the English press. It's received a fairly poor reaction on social media and my cousin, who lives in Ireland, says the press reviews there are in line with public reaction.

Beswitched Tue 18-May-21 11:14:12

It's not working for me. Lily James is miscast and isn't really capturing Linda's charisma and yearning for something that always seems just out of reach. She's playing her like an angry petulant child. The actress playing Fanny is at least as pretty as Lily if not more so. The constant voice over signals a scriptwriter a bit out of her depth and resorting to telling not showing.

And I really wish Linda and Fanny would stop pawing each other.

I have just watched the first two episodes and I love it. It is indeed bonkers.

SueDonim Mon 17-May-21 22:32:04

Yes, I did, Deedaa. grin I visited Australia just after the JRM incident and caught a great photo of a kangaroo in that louche pose!

I haven’t read the book and nor had my dd, with whom I was watching. We enjoyed it a lot, I suppose because we had no great expectations. My dd loved the clothes the women wore.

Deedaa Mon 17-May-21 21:10:13

Did anyone else notice that after Tony made his speech in the House of Commons he draped himself along the bench in the Jacob Rees Mogg pose? grin

Namsnanny Mon 17-May-21 17:01:36

It's ok. The characters are portrayed as one dimensional ( so they will appeal to all?).
I'll see it to the end, but only if I knit at the same time!!?

Visgir1 Mon 17-May-21 16:23:42

I thought it was delightful, and bonkers. Love it.

MayBee70 Mon 17-May-21 15:18:25

She was more interested in Andrew Scott!

Casdon Mon 17-May-21 11:21:13

I really enjoyed it again last night, saw the dogs, they were beautiful. I must say I really like the musical score, it’s a clever interpretation of the script.
I’m glad I’m not married to Fanny’s husband, he’d do my head in with his marmalade spoons!

MayBee70 Sun 16-May-21 23:29:54

My dog sort of watching the scene with her mum in...

MayBee70 Sun 16-May-21 23:23:37

I haven’t read the books but I did think that tonight’s episode was better than the first one.

Dinahmo Sun 16-May-21 22:59:16

Not again "it's not as good as the books" Books and films are different!

I loved the books and also the earlier dramatisations. Forget comparing this series with the books and just watch it. And, hopefully, enjoy it.

MayBee70 Wed 12-May-21 23:01:37

We’ve got that on dvd. It’s still really expensive to buy I think. I must rewatch it.

I did find some moments quite comical but when I read that "Uncle Matthew" (based apparently on Mitford's father) actually hunted his children through the forest with a whip I felt slightly queasy. Although it was presented as funny, should a xenophobic man who bullies and terrorises his children be the subject of humour?

I haven't read the book but assume it has a similar jokey tone. I did not find the characters spirited, charmingly eccentric or amusing. I think the girls are vacuous and annoying and, in general, they are a ghastly bunch of people, several of whom had strong Nazi connections.

As Call the Midwife was mentioned on this thread, I used to like this programme very much but, although it shines a light on some important events and issues occurring at the time, it has become rather sickly sweet for my liking - and the continual soppy music is beginning to grate on me.

I remember watching The Glittering Prizes and liking it but I haven't a clue as to what it was about. All I can remember is Tom Conti.

I wish they would show Our Friends in the North again as I think I must have missed the first episode and in those days if you missed an episode you couldn't turn to catch up. I would like to see it as it received rave reviews at the time.

trisher Wed 12-May-21 19:35:57

I do think people in the past looked much older at a younger age (hope that makes sense). Partly I think because they dressed as older people did. In some of the family photos I have teenagers often look in their 20s or 30s.

Casdon Wed 12-May-21 19:01:49

Lizbethann55 I’m guessing you haven’t read the book, it covers a long period of time by the end (about 15 years from memory). If you had 18 year olds acting the main character parts they wouldn’t be able to look the part of women in their mid thirties either. I thought they were well cast, but it’s clearly marmite, as this thread has shown, there are lovers and haters, and not much in the middle.

Lizbethann55 Wed 12-May-21 18:51:13

What I really did not like about it is that it was supposed to be about young girls growing up. At the beginning of the book Linda and Fanny were in their teens and we then saw them as debutantes. As both the leading actresses are well into their 30s, instead of appearing innocent , naive and desperate to learn about life, love and sex, they just looked plain daft! I also went off it when I read that virtually all the cast were family and close friends of the writer and director. A bit of nepotism is one thing, but this was like a 1920s Mrs Browns Boys. !!

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 12-May-21 12:44:45

I ended up watching the final two episodes on iPlayer. The series improves and at least it keeps to the book. I am now re-reading Don’t Tell Alfred.

Shropshirelass Wed 12-May-21 09:41:36

No, we couldn’t get into it either so watched something else on watch back! It was a disappointment.

Callistemon

Lucca

Callistemon that book sounds good ...what’s it called?

Actually, I'm not enjoying it very much but sticking with it in case it gets better and I need to know the answers.

Spoiler: She doesn't fight and go and get a great job btw

One of the Seven Sisters series (The Sun Sister) by Lucinda Riley.

Oh yes. I read one because a friend recommended it. Not impressed ! Ta anyway.

I absolutely adored it! Such fun.

I agree! People here are talking about it as if it’s their set text for A level. Enjoy! Relax! Have a dance when the music takes you?!

Just as an aside.....how different peoples viewing tastes are ! I’d rather pop some sharp objects in my eyes than hear/watch jane Mac Donald on her cruises!
