Eurovision Song Contest....time to leave?

I loved it this year. The songs were of a much higher standard than normal, albeit there were still some Shakira wannabes. It was lovely to see the absolute joy of everybody who was involved in such a big event after this year of Covid.

The reason we get a pass to the final is that we were a founder member of the EBU, along with France, Germany, Spain and Italy, I think. We still contribute to the EBU which is a network of public service broadcasters. We don't enter to win, we enter to be there.

We weren't ridiculed. Just nobody voted for us. Did you see the reception the UK singer got in the hall when his results were announced?

It was the opposite of ridicule.

I think there were many typical Eurovision songs that were of a very high standard that they ended up splitting the votes between them and something different got the votes. I still don’t like the winning song but am still listening to and enjoying the other ones. Strangely enough one of my favourite U.K. entries over the tears has been the Engelbert Humperdinck one and I don’t usually like ballads.

Oh, the halcyon days back in the 60’s and 70’s, when watching Euro was a ‘must’ in the tv calendar.

The Italians won, though they have on a number of occasions withdrawn from the contest, with a 14-year gap between 1997 and 2011.

Maybe the UK should give it a miss for a few years as well?

We either need to stop taking it so seriously and send someone that really has no chance of winning, just for the fun of it or just pull out completely.
Popularity behind scenes amongst the other entrants means nothing obviously!
Is it just me , or did our fall from grace begin the slide down once the Eastern European countries were allowed to compete?

We could have Ed Sheeran singing our song with Beyonce strutting her stuff in the background and we'd still come last. Its got nothing to do with talent- it's all politics.

They probably don't like us but this year, not for the first time our song and its performance were poor. Time to leave, at least for a while IMO, and save some money

If we are going to keep entering every year we need a group that stands out cos the group that won had more eyeliner than Superdrug and as for the outfits, well.... Cheryl Baker said "the ripping off the skirts" made people remember their song and I do think she's right although prob too tame these days, the whole lot would have to come off!

It’s political. Always was, always will be. ‘Europe’ gets bigger every year - now we have Russian entries!

I quite like "Embers" but I don't think it was a suitable song for this year and it was very badly performed. I do wonder, though, if other countries reluctance to give us any points started when we started to make fun of the whole thing. Much as I loved Terry Wogan's comments, I don't think they were taken well by other countries. And now Amanda has been appallingly rude, after listening other people speaking immaculate English all night. I think the votes had already closed by then, but people will remember it for next year.

That’s a good idea, they would vote for Bill. They would have to admit his talent, his multiple instrument playing skills are legendary, and he would make everybody laugh!

I think Bill Bailey would be a great entry for the UK - a bit tongue in cheek I imagine - but would the other countries get his sense of humour.

Maybe we should just accept that they don't like us or vote for us and stop taking our UK entry so seriously.

I liked Iceland and Lithuania - quirky but not too stupid

There were NO good songs in this year's Eurovision song contest and far too many young women who looked as if they had bought their costumes in the nearest porn shop!

Most of the contestants could not sing, act or put their songs across.

Most of the songs sounded like something we had heard before - the Finnish number was Heavy Metal in Disco dress!

Was there one single number you felt like whistling or humming afterwards, or that you could even remember?

If the standard does not improve drastically next year and the voting continues to show political bias then I think it is time to drop the whole idea of a Eurovision song contest.

We have no idea of what sort of song/artist to send. This year's was particular rubbish. The other countries' entries had more life and colour and charisma, even if you didn't actually like them. He was dull and dreary looking, couldn't sing well and the song was boring. So it's hard to tell if we never do well because we are disliked or because we just continually send crap artists/songs.

I believe we need to ‘cock a snoot’ at them. Show that we are not bowed by them. Onwards and upwards. Defiant and proud.

I think it’s just become more about politics than singing.
Most of the other countries might not like us but who do they expect to rush to their aid if a disaster happens Us every time
I find it astonishing that it’s always Us that is expected to deal with and provide help, food, money first.I know we should be and are sympathetic to others problems but Sometimes it makes me laugh we are a very small island but have to give the most or other nations complain’ where are the British’
I also feel cross that in the 21st century we still have people starving and using food banks yet we have money to give to other countries who use it not to help their own citizens but for things we can’t afford to do.
Very sorry rant over I think we should pull out of EuroVision too

We only ‘get a place’ because we are one of the top 5 financiers of this yearly debacle. Let’s pull out and let them do without our money.

The French one, Voilá; The Swiss one, Tout l'univers; the Dutch one, Birth of a New Age; the Swedish one, Voices.

DH called the Italian one as the winner as soon as he heard it.

Before the UK became a joke in the the contest, in 1996 we had one of the best Eurovision songs ever.... Just a Little Bit sung by Gina G. We was robbed, it was by far the best song in the contest. IMHO it even vies with Waterloo, it’s such a good pop song. The following year, perhaps out of guilt for not voting for the UK the year before, Katrina and the Waves won with a vastly inferior song. After that we were never taken seriously again. We will probably never score another point in the contest, we’ve become such a pariah. We’ve never had such a good song either.

Haven't watched it for years. Can't be bothered with all the ridiculous presentations, backing groups and outfits. It's a song contest, why can't the artists not just sing. I understand we were not the only entry to have null points awarded.
