Never watch it.

I recommend that you watch Channel 4 news, at 7pm. It could well expand your horizons.

"Our TV industry is a British success story. Channel 4 profits go back into the industry: selling it off will give them to American shareholders. When we should be promoting our creative skills across the world, the Govt launches a ‘consultation’ on how best to muffle them."

Senior executives at Channel 4 have pushed back against a possible privatisation of the broadcaster by the government, warning some programmes could be cancelled if the changes are approved.

The issue is coming to a head as the network announces its best ever financial results after a recovery in advertising revenues and a reduction in spending.

The government is currently considering whether to sell off Channel 4, with Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden expected to make an announcement about the company on Wednesday.

This is likely to involve some sort of consultation on the network’s ownership and editorial direction, with a view to potentially privatising the group as soon as next year.

Channel 4 is state-owned but 90% funded by adverts, giving it a unique position among the UK’s broadcasters. Its advertising revenue allows it to create content for more diverse audiences, in line with its public service remit.

Channel 4 is strange isn’t it?
It can have really tacky, nasty programmes which make me wonder who on earth watches this sordid rubbish, and yet it also has Grand Designs and Location.

It wouldn’t bother me if it was sold. It might be a way to get rid of the rubbish.

Channel 4 news has the highest evening viewer ratings.

MayBee70 Thu 24-Jun-21 11:41:43

Channel 4 News is the one news programme we never ever miss. In fact, we base everything in the evening around it.

Channel 4 has lots of European tv. This makes a change from the overwhelming USA tv that is on Netflix, Prime etc. I’m considering paying for no adverts as I find them so irritating. I currently have BritBox and Prime on subscription and this is as much as I can afford of pay tv plus the tv licence. I’ve tried documentaries on both Netflix, Prime, Channel 5 and find they lack substance and repeat themselves after every ad break. As others have mentioned Ch 4 news is by far the best for world affairs.

This seems another bit of selling off the family silver to me together with the possibility of our NHS records being sold to private companies. I don’t trust this government at all to do the best for our country. They are too busy lining their pockets and the pockets of their buddies. Maybe Dido Harding will become chief exec. of Ch 4 as well!

NotSpaghetti Thu 24-Jun-21 12:12:15

I love the European content on 4.
All 4 has a great selection of world films and TV.

Yes, there is some "popular" stuff - but oh my goodness what jewels have we found there!

pinkquartz Thu 24-Jun-21 12:17:55

The only news I watch is Channel4 news.
I watch quite a few of their other progs......I can switch off to miss the ones I don't want in my head.....

Channel 4 will be missed. The Govt hate Channel4 and that is not a good reason to destroy them.

I am afraid that this is a blatant attempt to silence one of the few non-Tory supporting voices in the media.

Brocky Fri 25-Jun-21 10:41:49

I agree with NotSpaghetti, my husband and I watch certain programmes which are ‘our choice’.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 25-Jun-21 10:45:33

I see Lloyd Weber is seeing the government to try to force it to publish data relating to the culture industry and opening up.

For whatever reason this government has suppressed it.

One wonders why.

Alioop Fri 25-Jun-21 10:59:28

I like quite a few programmes on 4, love anything to do with houses, Location, etc all channels have there fair share of rubbish so at least we have a choice what to watch.

TopsyIrene06 Fri 25-Jun-21 11:09:37

Channel 4 news is the only one worth watching. Not afraid of raising difficult questions to ministers or unearthing subjects that other channels dare not. Cathy Newman in particular is a spectacular journalist.

Annsan Fri 25-Jun-21 11:17:48

Channel 4 news is a must. In-depth international reporting as well as as British

Bijou Fri 25-Jun-21 11:18:21

Channel 4 news is the best. They also produce some good films.

Which is exactly why the government is selling it off.

If it's not broke, why fix it. Seems the government have not got enough to do. Why interfere? To make money? A typical short-sighted plan

That is very patronising of you. That is the trouble with many on GN, always think they are better than others.

Shortlegs Fri 25-Jun-21 11:42:59

This thread didn't take long to descend into the standard "let's slate the government".

Just an addendum, my horizons are well expanded, travelled the world, including Africa, Bahrein, Oman, Jordan, Sri Lanka, and many more. During my working life have had the privilege of working with people from many countries and religions, yes our NHS. Also speak German. Auf Weidersehen.
