Ok, am I the only one who hates tennis?

Wimbledon bores me rigid. The gasping and grunting with every shot really grinds my gears. I have never really been into spectator sports but sitting there for hours at Wimbledon watching a ball go back and forth, back and forth, and then if it rains there is a risk that Cliff Richard will get to his feet and sing shock No thanks. It is the sheer tedium of it

Daniel Evans GB now through. Woohoo

I’m loving every moment. German player Otte currently giving Andy Murray a run for his money. One set all.

I'm in the same category as Calendargirl. I lost interest a long time ago. I watched in the McEnroe era. I still watch the finals if I recognise the players.
I have a friend like Lemsip's who is unavailable during Wimbledon.
I just want to add, I don't like when people comment "There's an off switch". It seems rude.

Can’t stand watching any sports. So , yes I do go off and do something else. Probably something lots of people would not find interesting.

TerriBull ...nothing to do with tennis but there is a really good book called ‘A Long Walk To Wimbledon’ which I think may be written by H.R.F Keating ( or not) ?

My late MIL used to love watching tennis and I'd often find myself drawn in to watching it with her. As she was rather deaf she'd have the subtitles on which were often hilariously incorrect so we'd get the giggles. I met OH at the tennis club, I was a keen player, he was a social member and tbh I don't think he ever saw me play despite us buying a house with a garden that backed onto the club. I have never ever seen him watch any sport on TV although I am often glued for hours to my favourite sport. I enjoy watching Wimbledon, not boring at all!

I have no interest in any sport, don’t even watch the olympics.

I am not competitive or sporty in any way.

Witzend Wed 30-Jun-21 18:04:43

Not mad keen, though we’ve been once or twice - we don’t live far away and I’ve enjoyed being there - all those lovely purple petunias! Going late on the last day has been v good more than once, for mixed doubles finals, which are always much more fun to watch than any of the others.

Very bad dds and their friends would occasionally bunk off school and wait outside the gates after about 4.30 ish in their school uniform - people leaving early would feel sorry for them and give them their tickets! Sometimes they even got Centre Court ones.

What really got me watching sport was when someone said to me how it was as much a mental thing as a physical one. How someone can, eg be two sets down in a tennis match and then come back and win the next three sets is beyond me. I’d just go, ok, you’ve won, I’m going to go and have a cup of tea.

I agree about the series Queens Gambit Gillt57 who knew Chess could be so exciting. This was one of my binge watches. Best drama series of the year I think.

Yes, wasn't it surprising! If someone had told me that a series about chess would have me ( and DH) gripped, we watched it in two nights, I wouldn't have believed them! So many of us on GN get bored rigid with watching tennis, wasn't it interesting to see the crowds gathering in the freezing weather to watch the chess?

Other than that, thank you everyone, I now realise there is nothing wrong with me in not being obsessed with Wimbledon Fortnight!

*be friendly, not bf friendly.

GillT57,

Oh the home commentators!
Him indoors doesn't really do footy or tennis but does enjoy his cricket and I, of course as I just can't help it, will ask a general question like, "Which teams are playing?" And straight off will admonish myself for not staying quiet!
I then get the rundown, who is who, how good they are or how bad, what they should or shouldn't have done....Oh I do wish I'd learn to keep my mouth shut!!!
Then there's poker. He's in a friendly league with some family and close friends. They take turns playing at each others houses but it's only 2x a month, so that's not too bad.
Except, I do sometimes try to bf friendly and sit at the table if there's a spare seat or someone has left, then - again with the mouth - "What's a blind?"
Oh for heavens sakes, mouth, wait for the brain to engage before you utter anything but breaths!!!
Oh he did watch the big footy game the other night. Fortunately, I was in bed! Lol

I've never seen the point in watching any sport, although, if I'm not doing anything else, I do watch the Oxford/Cambridge boat race. I used to race in a ladies four in my yoof. Once had the opportunity to have a go in an eight and it was really scary.

Sport is something to be involved with not just watch on the telly.

DiscoDancer1975 Wed 30-Jun-21 16:35:37

No, you’re not the only one. I’d rather watch the grass grow! I hate watching any sport to be honest. The nearest we ever got to liking something was basketball. Out two sons used to play Nationally in the late nineties, and we did love that. Otherwise, would much rather be doing it.

The Tour De France is on ITV4 if anyone's interested.
I used to enjoy the tennis, but these days not so much. I do like the major golf tournaments, but they are mostly on Sky which we don't have.

H1954 Wed 30-Jun-21 15:47:22

I detest football, cricket, golf and tennis! Don't mind rugby and athletics but the others bore me rigid!

Lin52 Wed 30-Jun-21 15:40:49

Once had a friend who took her two weeks AL to watch Wimbledon, each to their own, but it’s not for me.

BlueBelle Wed 30-Jun-21 15:38:31

Can’t stand any sport on TV and get really really frustrated when it’s on every side and all the normal programmes get shoved around or taken off
Football yawn yawn
Tennis treble yawn
Motor racing double treble yawn
Why can’t they have a dedicated sports channel or even two

Rufus2 Wed 30-Jun-21 15:36:32

No thanks. It is the sheer tedium of it
GillT57 I agree! Not good for the neck! smile
It's almost as tedious as sorting out messages from posters who insist on telling me all about their sporting dislikes, as if I care!
Perhaps they're simply stirring, with tongue in cheek, but sometimes I have my doubts! hmm
I don't like the horses, but I guess nobody is interested!
OoRoo

We were given free tickets to Wimbledon a few years ago. One of the most boring days of my life. It was nice seeing the place and the stalls etc but tennis bores me to tears.

Tea3 Wed 30-Jun-21 15:04:48

My snobbish sister in law is a great fan of tennis. I’m sure more egalitarian types like it too.

jusnoneed Wed 30-Jun-21 15:03:46

I enjoy the tennis, like golf and most motorsports (except F1) especially motorcycles.
Hate football, cannot be doing with grown men falling down and pretending they are in crippling pain when anyone goes near them. Then get up and walk away without so much as a limp!
Cricket too long winded.

Kamiso

Grandma70s

Tennis fans are much better behaved than football fans (all right, I know it’s only a minority of football fans). I’ve never heard of tennis hooligans.

You rarely hear of football hooligans nowadays! The rugby crowds weren’t exactly social distancing but didn’t come in for the same contempt and disdain.

Can’t understand why people are so snidey about a game that gives working class lads the chance to shine.

I agree Kamiso. There is many a potential troublemaker saved by grassroots football. It doesn’t seem to encourage the same drinking culture as rugby either.
