Ok, am I the only one who hates tennis?

Wimbledon bores me rigid. The gasping and grunting with every shot really grinds my gears. I have never really been into spectator sports but sitting there for hours at Wimbledon watching a ball go back and forth, back and forth, and then if it rains there is a risk that Cliff Richard will get to his feet and sing shock No thanks. It is the sheer tedium of it

I don’t watch the Grand Prix any more. Used to love them years ago but find them very boring these days. Would get up in the middle of the night to watch the Japanese Grand Prix etc. I used to understand one rugby game but not sure if it was league or union and still remember that game that Johnny Wilkinson won. Also that cricket we won when Pieterson was playing. I had to go back to work that day but sneaked a radio into work so I could listen to it. And that boat race when Redgrave broke some sort of record.

I’m the opposite Mapleleaf love football, cricket, rugby (union), snooker, horse racing and Grand Prix, but tennis, ho hum. We pay for Sky Sports so we get lots of choice, MrJ is the same and avidly follows golf too.

I love all sport on tv the only exceptions being rugby and cricket, mainly because I don’t understand the rules. I don’t understand the rules of football either (can anyone give me an idiots guide to the offside rule though?). But I do know when I’m seeing a good game or not.

Oh, and I almost forgot, there will be the olympics to watch shortly, too... ?
(Well, I assume there will be).

Ok. I, and my DH watch as much sport on TV as we can! At the moment it’s a nightmare, what with the Tour de France (Cav won yesterday!), the Euros, Wimbledon. Not to mention F1 and the battle between Hamilton and Verstappen. Feel sorry for you that don’t like it, but can understand your frustration as there is a lot on at the moment.

hate all sport and won't watch any of it

Aveline Wed 30-Jun-21 14:09:45

I always hated having to play tennis and could never see the point of watching others play. I don't watch any sport at all.

TerriBull Wed 30-Jun-21 13:34:36

You're not alone, I hate most ball games, tennis included. My husband is a golf player, now that is truly the most boring of spectator sports. Nevertheless, tennis also bores me rigid.

My parents loved it we had it on all the time when I was growing up. I was aware there was a tennis player called Christine, that name seemed to crop up in our house quite a lot one particular year I didn't realise until much later they were actually talking about Christine Keeler who I thought was a tennis player at the time, mixing her up with Christine Truman shock

One set of grandparents lived in Wimbledon and we were only a few miles away where we previously lived. I have been there with a friend who got us tickets many years ago through her brother who was a ball boy. We saw Stan Smith and Nastase who was a heart throb at the time. Really it was totally wasted on me, although I do remember the very large strawberries.

I agree with the comments about tv coverage, not only is it on BBC1 and BBC2, but there appears to be the assumption on the commercial channels that they needn't bother with anything interesting as everyone will be watching Wimbledon! Thank heavens for Netflix. By the way, The Queen's Gambit, which is about chess of all things, is a really good series.

lemongrove Wed 30-Jun-21 13:31:32

I have no interest in tennis so never watch any, including Wimbledon, but DH does ( at least for semi finals and finals) and I have a friend who goes into a darkened room and watches Wimbledon from start to end, so I know better than to contact her until it’s over.?

SueDonim Wed 30-Jun-21 13:30:05

I understand the rules of tennis and of cricket so I like those. Anything else, not really. I don’t put them on tv to watch, though. The last time I watched tennis was probably when Andy Murray won Wimbledon. We don’t have any sports channels so I don’t see cricket.

sodapop Wed 30-Jun-21 13:29:04

I agree Mapleleaf why is Wimbledon on BBC 1 &2. I expect there will be the usual response "it's only once a year". It's frustrating.

Nonogran Wed 30-Jun-21 13:26:19

I have absolutely no interest on any sport on Tv. Football is slicker then rugby so I might watch a couple of minutes of a game. Cricket is as boring as tennis so never watch it. Horse racing is tedious & I dislike all the commentators’ shouting. Snooker is like watching paint dry. Likewise golf. Nah, I’m not a sports or athletics fan on TV at all, sadly. In some ways wish I could be because you have to admire our sports men & women and their commitment & athleticism. Well done England !

Mapleleaf Wed 30-Jun-21 13:23:52

Tennis, cricket, football, golf, motor racing, cycle racing, snooker, darts... the list goes on. You might gather I'm not a fan of sports on the whole. I think what really annoys me though, is the amount of coverage given to a lot of these on tv to the extent that programming goes to pot especially BBC 1 & 2. A designated channel such as BBC 4 should surely be a better option, or at the least, either BBC 1 or 2 - not both at the same time. We are not all sports fans, you know, BBC (and ITV to some extent), and we all pay the licence fee (and don't say there's the "off" switch, or catch up, which not everyone has, as that's not the point at all - there should be balance and choice).

Redhead56 Wed 30-Jun-21 13:20:37

Very boring over rated like football give me a rugby union match to watch any day.

poshpaws Wed 30-Jun-21 13:09:59

I'd just as soon watch a plank warp as watch tennis.

Ok Blossoming thanks, I am aware of the off button, was just making conversation. Bloody hell.

To be fair so was Blossoming!

GillT57 Wed 30-Jun-21 13:04:58

Eazybee I knew several people when I was working in London, who used to book Wimbledon fortnight off, every year. I am happy to watch rugby, and will likely watch the Euros football at the weekend, but tennis is soooooo boring......

Lucca Wed 30-Jun-21 13:04:37

Christine Truman ?

eazybee Wed 30-Jun-21 13:02:45

I don't like it, which was a great disappointment to my parents as they met at the Tennis Club. Every year Wimbledon fortnight was sacrosanct, and they would watch television avidly; I used to watch the finals and I remember the Ladies' final with Christine ? and Angela Mortimer, that used to go on forever.

sodapop Wed 30-Jun-21 13:02:28

I'm not a sports fan either, I can understand that others enjoy it and get really involved but not for me. Luckily I have some good books to read.

Grandma70s Wed 30-Jun-21 12:57:06

My problem with all sports is that I couldn’t care less who wins, which rather takes away the point.

GillT57 Wed 30-Jun-21 12:49:52

Kamiso Wed 30-Jun-21 12:48:48

Grandma70s

Tennis fans are much better behaved than football fans (all right, I know it’s only a minority of football fans). I’ve never heard of tennis hooligans.

You rarely hear of football hooligans nowadays! The rugby crowds weren’t exactly social distancing but didn’t come in for the same contempt and disdain.

Can’t understand why people are so snidey about a game that gives working class lads the chance to shine.

Blossoming Wed 30-Jun-21 12:48:19

Hate is rather a strong word and televisions have an ‘off’ button. I don’t have the energy to feel strongly about it either way.
