There was little to say, I can remember her tours but at that time the media didn’t ‘do prying’, attention went off her as
Charles and Anne started public appearances, it was the same
with her sister in law the Duchess of Kent, she was filmed at
Wimbledon but even though she did much charity work little
was said. They didn’t seek the headlines.

lemsip you are mistaken. I take a keen (and sometimes guilty?) interest in royalty past and present and as I said, nothing new was proffered. I’m surprised people know so little about her. To me it was a mundane and forgettable programme.
You also misquote me, I did not say “this woman”.

Princess Marina a fashion icon.

In the 1930s there was a pale green colour that was fashionable and was called 'marina green'.

I’m watching the Edinburgh Tattoo - 70 years. Superb !!!!!it’s on BBC1

Yes, I caught some of that and rewatched the whole lot on iplayer. I never realised it was staged at the front of the castle. I thought it was inside. I loved watching those girls marching to Lord of the Rings and The Phantom music. Might watch it again! Desperate to go back to Edinburgh. I so love the place.

I have always known her name and her face, but I really knew very little about her, so I found this programme very interesting. I didn’t even know she was the Queen’s cousin.

lemsip Mon 30-Aug-21 19:32:53

hollysreers8 how silly to watch something you clearly weren't into.
She wasn't 'this woman' She was a cousin of the Queen.
google her if you want more.

Extremely lightweight and hagiographic. Found out little about the woman.
The talking heads are so annoying. I’m always taken aback by the high excitement levels these people operate on. It seems a waste to spend your life immersed in such a hardly relevant subject.

Her father was the brother of George V1th, the Queens father, not George V11th. He was killed in WW2, in a flying accident which begged a lot of unanswered questions.

I remember my ds friend used to be a bodyguard to princess Alexandra’s husband and in the day it was usual for him to enjoy a toot or three.

Whatdayisit Sun 29-Aug-21 08:49:30

I like Richard Kay but he is mostly on the Diana programmes! Hugo Vickers is very authoritative I always listen properly to him!

sparklefizz ??? yes me too!

The only thing that irritated me about the programme was the professor who kept referring to her as Alex as if she knew her personally where as everyone else referred to her as Princess Alexandra or just Alexandra. I couldn’t see her as an Alex somehow!

That really bugged me too. I was waiting for her to call the Queen "Liz" smile

Whatdayisit Sun 29-Aug-21 07:52:38

^^ channel 5 not chat

Whatdayisit Sun 29-Aug-21 07:52:03

We watched - as we do all the chat royal programmes
I did smile at Marina's clothes - definitely 1980s!
Her mother's brother was Prince Phillip's father. I think that's the good thing when so many of your cousins are also your spouses cousins!

Gwyneth Sun 29-Aug-21 07:29:00

I watched the programme and hadn’t realised how often she represented the Queen abroad. She certainly kept under the radar. The only thing that irritated me about the programme was the professor who kept referring to her as Alex as if she knew her personally where as everyone else referred to her as Princess Alexandra or just Alexandra. I couldn’t see her as an Alex somehow!

Her husband sir Angus Ogilvy Died: 26 December 2004 (aged 76)......It was Alexandra's Father who died young in a plane crash when she was 5years old.

Her Father was Duke of Kent, brother of King George V11 the Queen's father

I only caught a bit of the programme so I misunderstood. Thanks for that.

MayBee70 Sun 29-Aug-21 00:28:37

I hadn’t realised her husband was so young when he died. In fact I can’t remember him dying.

Am recording this. I met and spoke to Princess Alexandra when she was representing the Queen at the Commonwealth Conference in Singapore in 1969. My fiance, later DH, was working at the British High Commission, and we had an invitation to the evening reception for her. We had just got engaged, which she thought was so romantic!

seacliff Sat 28-Aug-21 20:30:30

Thanks lemsip, I just turned on and was wondering if there was anything interesting. I remember Princess Alexandra came and opened the new wing of our school, in the mid 60s. She seemed beautiful and friendly to me.

lemsip Sat 28-Aug-21 20:24:05

at 8.30pm channel 5 Princess Alexandra the Queen's confident... is on.
We don't often see Alexandra who's 84 now. I shall watch it and wonder if others may be interested.
