I started watching this half heartedly last night as it has the same small pool of current popular actors and actresses in it, and one of them i am not really keen on. But to my surprise it drew me in. The setting of being underwater in a submarine is different and i am looking forward to the next episode this evening.

I heard Shaun Evans talking about it on the radio so have recorded, anyone know if he uses his natural, Liverpool, accent, completly through me on the radio as I am used to his Endeavour/Oxford accent

It was strange as the accent was so different but his voice is distinctive anyway.

I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be North East England or not?

A bit annoyed because I stupidly thought it was a two parter and now I have to wait until next Sunday for the next episode!

I also found sound poor at times... had to rewind to catch words and menacing music at times was irritating. Excellent actors but showed up poor performance of chap who found body on sub.

Three of the actors were in Dr Foster. Maybe it’s the same director/producer?

I watched it with my OH, who is a computer scientist. He was annoyed at the simple password used on the laptop and the fact that the pen drive was removed and not ejected! Everything else was fine! I’m enjoying it very much.

Silverbridge.
Yes Gentleman Jack, yet another excellent performance from her.

Not normally liking this kind of thing, but the start reeled me in like a fish! Have yet to watch the second part, just hoping it's as good as the first and has a good ending..

DH says that when he returned to the surface, after his enforced sojourn beneath the waves, the above wave crew, unscrewed the lid and leapt well away as the air was so thick, you could have cut it with a knife.

I bet nobody mentioned the smell on submarines. ?

theworriedwell it took me a while to work it out as his face seems to be more in darkness than the others
(Does that mean he's the baddie? I hope not.)

Aldom

I have a phobia with the sea and after watching the horrendous scene when the fishing vessel is dragged under the sea I had to turn off the TV. My father was career Royal Navy. Also went through WW2. He said he could never have worked on submarines.

My father was RN in WW2. Some of his service was in submarines. He hated it with a passion, not sure if you'd call him full on claustrophobic but he didn't like confined spaces. He also said it was hell trying to sleep.

I agree, Maisiegreen, there were a few anomalies, e.g., the car crashed into deep water, yet SJ and the daughter emerged onto a beach. Jade waiting for someone on a lonely country road?!

And a country road with a lamp post ? Living in a village - I wish!

Country roads round my way often have lamp posts close to villages or busier roads, locally some people trying to get them removed so they can see the stars.

^Give me Morse every time.^

Bingo Grammaretto!!

I did wonder why they needed her to solve it as they already had Endeavour on board!
(It took me a while to realise, it's the voice ?)

I was getting so annoyed as I knew his voice but couldn't think who he was.

Thoroughly enjoying it

Liked the start of the first episode - nice shot of the builders' logo (VSEL) on the opening credits.

Most of my family have worked in or around those boats and their predecessors for years - I daresay a few of my friends will be expecting to be called up to Rosyth when HMS Vigil returns for repairs!

Cracking show though - I agree with everyone else - and you can imagine our conversations too!! grin

Smurf52 Tue 31-Aug-21 17:43:17

Snap! I was just about to watch the first episode.

Compulsive viewing, excellent acting, and great storyline.

Thoroughly enjoying, although needing sub-titles feature, as quite difficult to hear some of the dialogue.

NannyDaft Tue 31-Aug-21 14:59:48

Excellent

Callistemon Tue 31-Aug-21 14:41:05

NeilSpurgeon you are perfectly correct - he's a CPO

For submarines, a coxswain holds the rank of chief petty officer 2nd class (CPO2) - Wikipedia (so not from the horse's mouth).
So he should not be addressed as 'Sir'

Callistemon Tue 31-Aug-21 14:33:17

The strangest bit is the Cox’n, a Chief, being called Sir by everyone.

NeilSpurgeon I asked DH about that and he said that if he is a Warrant Officer (formerly Fleet Chiefs) he will be called 'Sir' by all in ranks below him and 'Mr' Glover by commissioned officers.

It's too dark to see if he's a Warrant Officer and I couldn't see his face either but the voice is distinctive as young Endeavour Morse.

It’s good, however it’s so claustrophobic I wouldn’t last five minutes. Total respect to the people do it. Very good so far just hope it hasn’t given nightmares to the people that lost relatives and friends on the Antares. It was so awful.

Butweam1952 Tue 31-Aug-21 14:03:07

Great drama but think it will be only once a week from next week as Silent Witness starts next Monday at 9pm.

CV2020 Tue 31-Aug-21 13:48:19

Really enjoying Vigil. I was disappointed when Martin Compton died in first episode. However he still has his part to play!!
