I started watching this half heartedly last night as it has the same small pool of current popular actors and actresses in it, and one of them i am not really keen on. But to my surprise it drew me in. The setting of being underwater in a submarine is different and i am looking forward to the next episode this evening.

Although supposedly entirely fictional, I feel this was likely far too close to real life for the families of the trawlermen lost when the Antares was sunk in the same manner in 1990. I would imagine the detailed scenes of the crew fighting for their lives aboard the sinking trawler would be very upsetting. I wouldn't imagine they'd watch it for a minute, but knowing that this very personal tragedy has been used in a tv drama is probably quite upsetting.

Great drama, Suranne's approach to her detective work and investigations were perfectly executed at just the right pitch. I felt for her being winched down from the helicopter ?

Loving it & great acting!

Well worth - I am hooked!!

Ooh thanks, not heard about this, will check it out, love a good TV series

Alioop Tue 31-Aug-21 12:25:45

It was a great watch from the start with the trawler....don't want to ruin it for anyone not watched it yet. BBC1 has done it again for me, getting me hooked, waiting on Sundays to arrive to watch the next episode. It gives a real insight to what working on a submarine is like, I definitely couldn't cope being cooped up like that.

Son in Law is a submariner, has been since 2004 /2005.
He is now CPO , medic and nuclear expert.

Apparently he was watching Vigil in Scotland but my daughter down here in the SouthWest could not bear to watch it !!!
Filled me with admiration for my SIL, not that he ever tells any of us what he really does. shock

Great drama series considering the rubbish (imo) currently on TV. I’ve no idea whether submarine life, as portrayed in this drama, is true to life. More interested in the plot.

I thought that was odd too MawBe just the one that I could see.

I agree, Maisiegreen, there were a few anomalies, e.g., the car crashed into deep water, yet SJ and the daughter emerged onto a beach. Jade waiting for someone on a lonely country road?!

And a country road with a lamp post ? Living in a village - I wish!

It seems that every drama nowadays has to include lesbians, someone of colour, leading ladies rather than men and a smattering of ‘f’ words.
That said, it’s a very good whodunit, with an unusual setting. A change from Cotswold villages! ?Looking forward to the next episode (but not the ‘f’ words - if it’s not allowed on here, why is it allowed on TV…??)

There are quite a few anomalies from a service person’s viewpoint, I am ex RN but not a submariner, but it is a good, well written drama although the relationship between the police and senior RN officers is completely off the wall. The links are close and warm in reality between most sailors (except when drunk) and PC plod. The strangest bit is the Cox’n, a Chief, being called Sir by everyone.

Seabreeze

Anything with Suranne Jones in is usually good.
Did anyone see “I am Victoria.”Excellent actress.

Another Suranne Jones fan.

I have only watched the first episode of Vigil. She seems to be playing a similar role to her Rachel Bailey in Scott & Bailey - sharp, don't-mess-with-me investigator with personal issues lurking in the background.

Looking forward to series two of Gentleman Jack.

Watched the opening scenes last night. Definitely watching whole of first episode tonight.

I love it. Really surprised about the first episode and Martin Compston, it isn't what you expect.

They surely have to show some of the back story - that can't be Martin's only appearance! ?

The plot is intriguing but have to keep reminding myself it is a drama as the accuracy is just totally way off.

Forsythia Tue 31-Aug-21 11:21:23

I think it’s ok, quite predictable in some ways, but good viewing nonetheless. I don’t know enough about submarines to know how real life it is but having watched it I cannot think of anything I’d dread more than being in one. It’s quite scary! Very claustrophobic I think if this is a realistic portrayal.

I really enjoyed it. Can’t wait for episode 2….

grannybuy Tue 31-Aug-21 11:12:01

Thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes. I was left with my mouth open a number of times, as well as frequently saying
“ oh no “ aloud.

Pame Tue 31-Aug-21 11:04:44

Excellent drama, I felt that I was actually there at times!

Callistemon Tue 31-Aug-21 10:36:34

rubysong I see you already posted that about the uniform, apologies.
But yes, it was a glaring mistake in the first few minutes.

Callistemon Tue 31-Aug-21 10:34:30

DS is in the Navy and has pointed out lots of inaccuracies. The uniform is all wrong.
Pittcity in the photograph the CPO is wearing an Able seaman's uniform, isn't he? I'm sure they mentioned Martin Compston was a CPO.

DH thinks the guy who didn't see the tanker coming isn't a submariner but working undercover to find out what's going on.
Interesting!

The XO is full of resentment too, he hasn't progressed very far (even though his FIL is an Admiral ?)

The plot thickens.
