Coronation st latest trial

Was wondering about a Solicitor acting as a Barrister is such a high profile trial. Also, at the murder charge - surely sh ould have been manslaughter!!

Well, I suppose Kelly will be sentenced -a t 16 yrs that means a Juveline Detention Centre, but - undoubtedly -given Corries lack of many sets, will be in the only prison (the very local one), that all residents of the Cobbles get sent to. We could, of course, re-start the updated verson of the RELEASE THE WETHERSFIELD ONE.

However, I must say that I think the acting of those very young actors portraying both Kelly and Corey has been very excellent. They put many of the more mature and experienced actors to shame. Would have liked to see both of them getting an award at the Soaps.

Hasn't there been some brilliant acting throughout this storyline. Nina, Abby, Kelly, etc., all excellent.

I have wondered about a few things in this case. Why were the other 2 boys not appearing in court at the same time as Kelly and Corey? Only Eli gave evidence at the trial. As Kelly's foster father, isn't it a conflict of interest to represent her? Can it be termed a murder when there was no planned intent to kill Seb? I thought that was manslaughter. Should Imran and his ex-wife have been so close given they are on opposite sides? I daresay this isn't the end of it. Perhaps Corey's bag of bloodied clothes may be found to provide hard evidence against him or his father's dealings with witnesses may blow up in his face.

I think the other two boys weren't accused of the murder, they had been tried separately for the attack on Nina.

Thanks for that. I thought it strange they weren't in court alongside Kelly and Corey considering the kicking they gave Nina.

What seemed the biggest omission to me was - Nina's testimony was rubbished on the basis of the delay in remebering, surely that's common after a head injury, there should have been someone testifying to that effect.

Barristers can be distinguished from solicitors in court because they wear a gown and wig. They work at higher levels of court than solicitors. Their main role is to act as advocates in legal hearings. They stand in court and plead the case of their clients in front of a judge.

Having said that, barristers do not always wear a gown and wig in court, although I think in criminal trials they do. Gown and wig must be worn by barristers in The Royal Courts of Justice. They cannot be worn in the street, and should be put on once inside the building. Gowns and wigs are not worn in the Family Court, by barristers or judges.

Yes, it is quite normal for solicitors to defend in court, but especially in high profile cases such as a murder trial, it would be normal to instruct a barrister. My son is a barrister, not criminal law though, and is instructed by solicitors for the cases he does. No one goes directly to a barrister, their solicitor will instruct a barrister if it is desirable. In murder cases this would be desirable.

Yes Aveline he is a solicitor advocate so perfectly reasonable for him to represent her in court.

I’m absolutely sure it was not in Kelly’s best interest to have her foster parent defend her. Not strictly illegal I don’t think, but certainly undesirable.

I think lots of things in the trial are not true to life. Imran is a solicitor and perfectly entitled to defend Kelly, but as a solicitor he is not perfectly entitled to wear the gown and wig he’s been wearing. Those are for barristers only. Imran would have engaged and briefed a criminal barrister to defend Kelly, that is what normally happens with high profile cases such as murder or rape.
