More ‘British’ TV? What do they mean?

Just wondering what our ridiculous government are proposing. What is ‘British’ TV?

I admit to liking old fashioned detective dramas such as Midsommer Murders, Vera etc. and modern ones like Line of Duty. Costume drama is another favourite. I’d definitely like more home grown TV rather than loads of USA imports.

Just been watching Jewel in the Crown for the first time. What an indictment of British rule in India. Perhaps we will see more programmes about the iniquities of British rule elsewhere in the world and the appalling treatment both ancient and modern inflicted on the poorest in our society? Somehow I doubt that.

So what do the government mean?

I call the new culture secretary Mrs Yogurt

62Granny Fri 17-Sept-21 16:27:58

Perhaps the new culture minister is looking to have her books made into a British TV drama ?

This has all gone a bit Harry Hill, who would win a fight but Mrs Browns Boys is fighting with itself

Aveline Fri 17-Sept-21 16:08:59

It's hard to believe that anyone of any political persuasion actually likes 'Mrs Brown's Boys'!

Josianne Fri 17-Sept-21 15:43:19

A light hearted example of how British TV, Brexit and political persuasions all meet and result in a car crash.

Ronnie O'Sullivan could do an entertainment hour too where he acts moody and beats someone up with a snooker cue, it will have to be after the watershed

I'd hit him with a snooker cue if I could!

Oops, I am normally very peace-loving.

They say that they want programs to reflect British values, I believe.
That must be a joke surely-one of the programmes praised was Derry Girls!!!! shock

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 15:34:06

They say that they want programs to reflect British values, I believe.

Clearly according to some on here that doesn't include self-deprecation, irony and tolerance. Ho hum.

I have noticed that those of a politically Left-leaning persuasion, are less likely to be patriotic, continually knocking anything and everything British.

The evidence is clear on here.

????, I assume you had your tongue in your cheek.?

lemongrove Fri 17-Sept-21 15:12:20

Perhaps if we get a Labour government next Jennifer anything prefaced by the word British will suddenly be in favour.?

growstuff Fri 17-Sept-21 15:06:53

How insulting JenniferEccles! Has it ever occurred to you that "those of a politically Left-leaning persuasion" care about their country too and despair about the damage being done to its very fibre by the charlatans in government with their tin-pot meaningless patriotism?

trisher Fri 17-Sept-21 15:05:37

How is it "knocking" British anything to say that it needs to replace EU funding with other money?

Some of you lot are soo funny calling positive comments "ridiculous" just because you want to be right. I follow every genre and I do have experience. Did I say foreign art wasn't up to it? Have any of you actually worked in theatre or stage schools? Are your kids employed in the business? We have not eradicated our place on the world stage. Sport, the Arts and Media go way beyond that cuffufle. British TV will always move forward and re invent itself.

Actually I have experience in several of those fields and I know that most arts organisations are struggling to find the funds they lost when we left the EU and that individuals who are in those fields have benefitted and been supported by EU development programmes. The idea that British Arts in anyway exiats as a seperate entity from its European neighbours is completely out of date. My son is in the business.

Yes lemon there is stuff others want to watch, but not a lot that appeals to us. We enjoy Vera but we’re disappointed to find that after two new programmes the rest of the series will not be until January. I also wanted to watch last night’s drama Help, but we’ve decided to watch it on 4 at a later date. We watched the next episode in an Italian series we’re watching at the moment instead.

Our Prime Ministers could feature in his own series, 3 weddings and 25 babies and counting

lemongrove Fri 17-Sept-21 14:51:04

Does it hurt you to think of yourself as British Alegrias ? ?

Alegrias1 Fri 17-Sept-21 14:47:07

Poirot was written by Agatha Christie? Oh my world is rocked, I thought it was Herge. Or maybe Jacques Brel hmm

I'm sure you prefer 'River City', 'Still Game' and 'Scot Squad' of course being Scottish.

Yes, I love watching those while drinking my Bucky and scoffing my deep fried Mars Bars. hmm

Aveline Fri 17-Sept-21 14:42:23

Oh Alegrias fancy not knowing 'Poirot' was written by the thoroughly British, English even, author Agatha Christie.
I'm sure you prefer 'River City', 'Still Game' and 'Scot Squad' of course being Scottish.
There are TV programmes around to suit everyone so no need to argue at all!

lemongrove Fri 17-Sept-21 14:36:06

There are lots of good British dramas around this last few years maddy although I think the pandemic has had it’s effect in most countries, with productions having to be halted.

maddyone Fri 17-Sept-21 14:29:58

We watch lots of international television programmes. We think at the moment there’s little British tv to watch, or anyway that we want to watch.

Josianne Fri 17-Sept-21 14:25:46

And sold to over 100 counties.

Josianne Fri 17-Sept-21 14:21:26

And for the little ones there is even a Mondo di Pepa Pig in Milan.

There are spin offs in merchandise too.
