Has anyone been to see The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel to The Sopranos? As a long time fan, I loved it, but it certainly has it’s flaws.
Vera Farmiga plays Livia and is brilliant in the part. Alessandro Nivola plays Dickie Moltisanti, the father of Chris. He is rarely off the screen, acts his proverbial socks off and is a man whose mood can change in an instant.
The trailer made it look/sound like the film was about the young Tony, but his character is almost incidental to the film. And, though I really hate to say it, if he wasn’t James Gandolfini’s son, I query if he would/should have got the part. He does look like his father and that does help a bit.
Ray Liotto plays two brothers, and is sadly under-used in both parts.
We meet Paulie, Sil and Uncle Junior but learn nothing new about them, they are mere caricatures, albeit instantly recognisable ones.
The film depicts the Newark riots of 1967, but this story-line fails to be fully developed.
The costumes are good, and the music soundtrack is excellent. If you were only listening and not watching, you would instantly realise if you were with the Mob or elsewhere.
Like I said I loved it but unless you are a Sopranos fan, it’s really just another Mob movie. David Chase has sadly failed to live up to the standards he set in the original series. I think the film should have been either a mini-series, or as someone else suggested, the first part of a trilogy.
Fingers crossed for sleep tonight🤞

. I was hoping to see the three touring before it was cancelled by Covid. I will see if it's coming back here although DH said it would be boring.
