For fans of The Sopranos

Has anyone been to see The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel to The Sopranos? As a long time fan, I loved it, but it certainly has it’s flaws.
Vera Farmiga plays Livia and is brilliant in the part. Alessandro Nivola plays Dickie Moltisanti, the father of Chris. He is rarely off the screen, acts his proverbial socks off and is a man whose mood can change in an instant.
The trailer made it look/sound like the film was about the young Tony, but his character is almost incidental to the film. And, though I really hate to say it, if he wasn’t James Gandolfini’s son, I query if he would/should have got the part. He does look like his father and that does help a bit.
Ray Liotto plays two brothers, and is sadly under-used in both parts.
We meet Paulie, Sil and Uncle Junior but learn nothing new about them, they are mere caricatures, albeit instantly recognisable ones.
The film depicts the Newark riots of 1967, but this story-line fails to be fully developed.
The costumes are good, and the music soundtrack is excellent. If you were only listening and not watching, you would instantly realise if you were with the Mob or elsewhere.
Like I said I loved it but unless you are a Sopranos fan, it’s really just another Mob movie. David Chase has sadly failed to live up to the standards he set in the original series. I think the film should have been either a mini-series, or as someone else suggested, the first part of a trilogy.

I loved the Sopranos so am keen to see this. Is it on Netflix or NOW TV?

Only in cinemas just now.
Three of the series cast are touring the UK next year, discussing the series, answering audience questions, etc. Would be a very entertaining evening.
Also, have you listened to any of the podcasts that Michael Imperoli (Chris) and Steve Schirripa (Bobby) do? I’ve only recently started to listen. MI is wonderful, is very intelligent and has a beautiful voice. SS is very different, interrupts a lot, but apparently does settle after a few podcasts.
Forgot to say above, MI is a narrator in the film and that works really well.

Ah. Thanks. I'll wait till it's on TV.

Oh thank you. The Sopranos was my favourite programme ever. I was late to it as I didn't fancy it at all. I loved all those awful men for some reason, especially Christopher confused . I was hoping to see the three touring before it was cancelled by Covid. I will see if it's coming back here although DH said it would be boring.

I was hooked from the first episode way back in 1999. My ex son-in-law and I used to dissect every episode every week, much to my daughter’s disgust. It was him that I went to see the film with this week. Best tv series ever, and James G’s performance has never been bettered. I have the box set, watch it every few years, and can’t imagine ever being bored by it.
The only series that comes near it for me is The West Wing and for that, only up until Aaron Sorkin stopped being the main writer.
