Typically American but full of twist and I really enjoyed

Nvella

I love This is Us - American series about a family (Sally Field plays the matriarch)

I think you are thinking of another series Nvella, Sally Field isn’t in This Is Us. It is wonderful but five series is a lot to get through during a free trial.

Cinema Paradiso

The Green Book
Poldark
Leonardo
Mad Men - seven seasons, fantastic series about advertising in NY in the 60's
Parasite
Lad A Yorkshire Story
Pink Floyd documentary

I also enjoyed The Professor and the Madman.

I don't know if the following are still Free to Me but I enjoyed:

Sully (Tom Hanks),
I Care a Lot (Rosamund Pike) and
The Wilds (kind of Lords of the Flies but with young women).

I’m now devoted to Below Deck. It’s reality TV about deck crews that work on expensive motor yachts in beautiful and exotic locations. They come from a variety of backgrounds and countries. There’s also a hierarchy of command and different roles: stewards, deck crew and chef. They live at close quarters snd work hard catering to every last whim of the charter guests on board. When it goes well they get big tips. Of course it doesn’t always go well…

Compulsive viewing!

Thanks Meryl will have a look at that film.

Lemongrove
Have you watched The Professor and the Madman.
It’s the true story of the first compilation of the Oxford Dictionary.
Staring Mel Gibson and Sean Penn. Brilliant film.

Namsnanny
If you see a film that isn’t free keep looking at that film because they often remove films from the to pay list.
I see that Papillon is now free and the Greatest showman. Great film.

Also...Them! Another horror series, but also social comment as it centres around a lovely family, Mum, Dad and two daughters who settle into a ‘perfect’ suburban neighbourhood in the 1950’s ( in the US) and are hounded by the neighbours because they are black.Hounded by the supernatural as well!
Wonderfully acted, especially by the Mum and Dad.Well worth watching.

I too started to watch this, unfortunately could imagine too much what life was like in those days for black Americans, unable to continue with it. Friends watched it and said I wouldn’t like it quite violent ?

lemongrove Thu 30-Sept-21 15:47:23

Haha, am also a Game Of Thrones fan?

I’m beginning to worry about you ?

A film....Convergence.Only eight actors in it, would make a good play.Four couples, old friends, meet at one house for a dinner party, all seems well and then things start to go wrong.
Thought provoking sci-fi idea.

I also enjoyed Preacher, but not everybody would.Amusing roller coaster horror.

Thank you for your replies.
I've just looked up a review of your suggestion Lemongrove and I will give it a go tonight.
Also pencil in NanKate and Merylstreep suggestions for tomorrow!

Namsnanny Thu 30-Sept-21 12:36:28

Well, apart from the two mentioned in the op, I've enjoyed Succession, the Ozarks, Little Fires from other channels. Plus a psychological thriller goes down well!

MerylStreep Wed 29-Sept-21 21:04:20

Oooh, too many to mention. Yesterday I watched Jamie
I knew his story: lovely film.
What I do is scroll through the films/ series on my iPad and add them to my watch list.
Without knowing you likes it’s difficult to advise.

Tales From The Loop, a really quirky and original series which I found really touching in parts.

NanKate Wed 29-Sept-21 20:55:36

I’ve loved all the Outlander series.

Namsnanny Wed 29-Sept-21 20:33:06

We are just exploiting our first fee month and have watched Nine Perfect Strangers and Jeremy Clarkson's Farm.
Now wondering what next? smile
