I am afraid I am left unmoved by this supposed tear-jerker! What a waste of money! What do others think of it?

I love all things Christmas so look forward to the Christmas ads. Never saw anything remotely Christmassy in this one, particularly not an alien ? eating a mince pie foil! I felt as if it was an 'Emperor's New Clothes' ad - being hoodwinked by knowing we 'ought' to like it. And a small child alone in the woods - how is that ever going to happen these days? JL closed our local store anyway, and all the family decided never to buy from JL again, so the ad is a waste of money in many more ways than one. Yes, save the Christmas ad production money in 2022, put it towards real charitable causes, and recycle the best ads of the past.

I don’t like it. I fell in love with Edgar 2019

Yes, I loved Edgar and based a few lessons on that advert with 10 year olds. smile

Ah yes, the dragon was called Edgar, I had forgotten that.
It was a lovely ad but bittersweet as my DGS was/is different, and never invited to a birthday party or a Christmas one either.

Why do they have to have a new video each year? What about recycling? The one with the animals on the trampoline is the best!

It certainly is! I would be very happy to have this ad recycled every year.Foxes and badgers and dogs on a trampoline....what’s not to like?
Mind you I also loved the little dragon that couldn't control his fire ( was that JL?)

It's OK but not exactly original, heavily based on ET. My all time favourite, which was so poignant at the time, is the Sainsbury's 2014 one. Another thing I do like about Sainsbury's is they respect Armistice Day, never air their Christmas advert before the 11th November.

I stopped supporting JL some time ago and I’m not about to change my mind.

I never watch the John Lewis advert after hearing the amount of money spent on it. (I know the same is true of other companies but there is such a fuss made of the John Lewis campaign). I’m even more against the advert this year after John Lewis closed the Aberdeen store. There are now only two stores in the whole of Scotland.

watched the ad completely unmoved - the john lewis ones don't seem to say christmas to me at all.
we all know that christmas ads are made to show the company's products and to sell them to consumers and these ads do this usually by trying to conjure up the feeling that if you bought everything from them then you'll have the most wonderful and magical christmas.
doesn't work for me unfortunately as i seem to be very difficult to sell to!

£8 million to make the advert? What an utter waste of money. Redundant JL workers, hungry children in this and other countries. What sort of a world do we live in? And what priorities are we making? Am clearly hugely out of touch with life today!

I loved it! It made me laugh and at the end I had tears in my eyes.

Calistemon Sat 06-Nov-21 13:06:30

Call me off the chart but I don't like the idea of young chap meeting anything/anyone in the woods and keeping it secret from the family!?!

That thought crossed my mind too, Gabrielle

Was the alien supposed to be Jesus returning to earth? Or is this an allegory? After all, Jesus might be rather surprised to come back and find out just how people today are celebrating his birthday. (Not on the right date either, as far as we know.)
Mince pies? Glittery jumpers? What's that all about?

I think I'm over-thinking this tchgrin

Really liked it thought it was very sweet and children would love it. Difficult to believe it cost £8 million though.

I hate the word “Christmassy “

polly123 Sat 06-Nov-21 12:58:04

I think I am immune to advertising particularly if celebrity endorsed. I always fast forward through ads and when I do catch any I never remember what they are for. I do wonder why they are supposed to make people buy something. Since John Lewis closed two stores which were accessible to me, I don't bother with them.

jaybee66 Sat 06-Nov-21 12:55:39

I liked it.

Galaxy Sat 06-Nov-21 12:55:20

I am not sure what people mean when they say it's not christmassy, it has presents, Christmas tree, mince pies, family, Christmas jumpers etc.

Not for me this year, preferred the trampolining boxer dog. I like the Kevin the carrot ads best ??

Kevin the carrot my favourite also.

Couldn't work out how it was a "Christmas" advert. No reference to Christmas as far as I could see. All the usual christmassy things - trees/stable/angels/presents/santa etc were conspicuous by their absence. Only plus point seemed to be ethnically correct family! (Don't know which ethnic group and don't want to insult them. - a bit like calling a Scot or an Irishman '"English"!)

It’s very politically correct, no mention of the Christmas story, as you say, and has lost the appeal story of Christmas. Unless of course you think God was an alien and came down in a space ship They have wasted a huge amount of money on this, and it certainly wouldn’t get me into John Lewis.

Always a waste of money and make me feel less inclined to shop there.

MarilynneT33 Sat 06-Nov-21 12:23:12

Very disappointed this year. A lot of money spent for nothing. However, I love this one from the National Trust. What do you think? www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhPGCdTfhp0

Riggie Sat 06-Nov-21 12:18:20

I can't get that bothered about an advert. I rarely shop there so them spending a lot of money on an advert isn't affecting me.
