I am afraid I am left unmoved by this supposed tear-jerker! What a waste of money! What do others think of it?

Oddly enough, the jumper with the star,

Oh, I missed that entirely, adverts are wasted on me!

annodomini Thu 04-Nov-21 16:29:23

Chestnut Surely it should be advertising things they want you to buy, enticing you into their stores etc

Oddly enough, the jumper with the star, as worn by the boy in the ad, has already sold out. So...they did advertise a product and if people go to buy that one garment, they could be enticed t buy more Christmas items.

We watched part of a Ford advert being made.
Couldn’t believe the amount of people there and for what.
They were there all day. The clip we saw was no longer than 3 seconds, if that.

And 50+ ingredients tchshock

Calistemon Thu 04-Nov-21 16:08:52

Not just any mince pie - a Heston Blumenthal mince pie!!

When is a mince pie not a mince pie? When it's got lemon curd and a crumble topping. Whatever next?

Josianne Thu 04-Nov-21 15:42:10

And the bit with the mince pie foil case. Was it a Heston one?

I see absolutely no point in the John Lewis alien advert. Surely it should be advertising things they want you to buy, enticing you into their stores etc. Not that I would be enticed, but surely that is the purpose of an advert.
This old Waitrose advert is a real tear jerker (I think so anyway) and is totally beautiful and heartwarming!

They were briefly eating Christmas dinner but it certainly wasn’t the focus. Anyway I gave up before the end so I suppose I should shut up.

£8 millionshock how on earth could it have cost £8 million?

How? Why?

I could have made it for a tenth of that and still be laughing all the way to the bank ?

BTW, there was no reference to food and drink in this video because Waitrose will be doing their own advertisement this year.

Well that's a relief!

ginny Thu 04-Nov-21 15:28:40

I certainly wasn’t overwhelmed by the ad. It went on too long. Certainly won’t notice me to buy.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 04-Nov-21 15:23:37

I’m not remotely influenced by tv ads seeking to sell me something. For preference I either watch BBC or record a programme so I can skip ads. So every penny spent on tv advertising is totally wasted on me. Having said that though I hope some of the charity ads make people who don’t already donate think about doing so if they can. I realise I am contradicting myself here but I do already make regular donations to those close to my heart, some of which advertise.

It feels utterly obscene to be spending millions on advertising.

Yes, I know it’s paying some people’s salaries but I think if JL had issued a statement that they were sharing their advertising budget between some deserving charities and their loyal staff they would have generated a lot of support from customers. And they could make it a big annual feel good event.

The planet really doesn’t need us to be going Christmas shopping. And I would love to never see another article advising on present-buying for the man who has everything… while every day the world has more people who have, quite literally, absolutely nothing.

Have you seen the M&S Christmas ad? Dawn French as the fairy and Percy Pig. Nothing too controversial.

BlueBelle Thu 04-Nov-21 15:06:29

ET phone home …Nonsense really …. I never can understand all the money spend on a single advert when half the world is starving I m sure they have never made me go out to buy anything and I don’t think I ve ever set foot in a John Lewis store so won’t rush off to start because of that ad
Not impressed

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 04-Nov-21 14:54:24

If I were one of those former employees on the scrap heap I'd be livid. What a waste.

GreyKnitter Thu 04-Nov-21 14:52:09

The beginning of November for Christmas adverts is far too early! I’m not going to watch it for a couple of weeks at least. I had an email from m and s with theirs attached too but I’m afraid I deleted that.

maddyone Thu 04-Nov-21 14:48:20

Did it cost £8 million? Good grief, what a waste of money.

Kate1949 Thu 04-Nov-21 14:45:14

I quite liked the ad though!

kittylester Thu 04-Nov-21 14:42:16

visgirl I have never eard it called that effort but it is also my mother's hip. Actually, there aren't many options nowadays.

Smileless2012 Thu 04-Nov-21 14:25:09

Kate1949 Thu 04-Nov-21 14:24:52

I've always found John Lewis too expensive. They closed their 'flagship' store here in Birmingham. It wasn't there for long.

Jaxjacky Thu 04-Nov-21 14:23:13

Sorry those who don’t, I love it ??

MerylStreep Thu 04-Nov-21 14:14:50

Calmlocket

Not impressed, their xmas ads are much the same with different characters. The money spent on these ads could be put to better use!

The cost was £8 million. Lots of John Lewis ex employees who were made redundant aren’t happy.
