I am afraid I am left unmoved by this supposed tear-jerker! What a waste of money! What do others think of it?

Very po faced advert. Nothing whatsoever to do with John Lewis. Doesn't encourage me to go off on a shopping spree.

Shoppers gonna shop, regardless of the advert.
Nobody has said it has driven them to go and spend more.
Perhaps it's a subliminal thing, though.

PS. Just seen Periwinkle's post.

Same here!

I should be in bed. I'm not making any sense at all.

£8 million to make the advert? What an utter waste of money. Redundant JL workers, hungry children in this and other countries. What sort of a world do we live in? And what priorities are we making? Am clearly hugely out of touch with life today!

Was it £8 million to make the ad? Or does that include the broadcasting time?

Still don't like the advert. In fact until today I've been extremely disappointed with all the Christmas adverts.

But Aldi has saved the day ... Marcus Radishford ..

Well, several people have said it, but what’s so “PC” about an alien in the woods? Am I missing something here? confused

I actually like it more the more I see it.

Gwyneth Wed 10-Nov-21 20:29:06

I think it was more about showcasing their PC credentials than Christmas.

Test run for Gransnet.

Most of the costs were for advertising slots on tv, actual cost of ad not eye watering figures mentioned.

Find them depressing and sad.

A very politically correct advert. ?I’ve only ever been in J Lewis once, for a wedding outfit ( I didn’t find what I wanted). I don’t see why they can’t actually show their products. I find most adverts annoying. Time to put the kettle on! ?

I think you'd have to go a long way to beat Sainsbury's Christmas ad with Mog The Forgetful Cat - especially when it included Judith Kerr. Not that any of them encourage me to go to one particular store for my Christmas shopping. It still comes down to price and convenience.

I loved it but like many here it has absolutely zero impact on whether I would shop with them or not.

I must have shopped at JL three times in my life. We’ve only just got one within striking distance fairly recently, still an hour away by bus. And another half an hour to Waitrose, who don’t deliver here either. We’re obviously not posh enough.

I always look forward to the Christmas adverts though. smile

Soon wiped the Christmas smile off that little girl's face once Boxer started jumping about.

I don't like it. If it doesn't bring a teat to my eye it's not for me

Franbern Sun 07-Nov-21 09:27:34

I never watch ANY adverts on tele. Record any programmes on channels which have adverts. so I can just fast forward these. Each year I hear about the JL advert, but have never watched any of them.

The only exception I ever made to this rule was three years ago with the Iceland Orangutang one. Brilliant. Would hope they just keep on using that year on year. And so relevant at the moment.

It's OK but not exactly original, heavily based on ET. My all time favourite, which was so poignant at the time, is the Sainsbury's 2014 one. Another thing I do like about Sainsbury's is they respect Armistice Day, never air their Christmas advert before the 11th November.

Yes, Rosie51 - I appreciate Sainsburys holding back their campaign until after Remembrance Day too and agree that the advert you link to is the best ever.

Though I suppose it’s time to stop fast forwarding through the adverts to see the Christmas offerings. I’ve just watched the JL one and found it quite touching. I like a bit of sentimentality at Christmas (and don’t care for the trampolining animals).

I don’t like it. I fell in love with Edgar 2019

Yes, I loved Edgar and based a few lessons on that advert with 10 year olds. smile

I loved Edgar too. He’s still a screensaver on my phone ?

I do like the Ikea ad with the buff teddys I would love one of those so cute.

Not impressed at all with John Lewis ad why do they make such depressing ads its Christmas a time to be joyful

Calistemon Sat 06-Nov-21 19:48:47

I think we do understand what Christmas is about, Rabbitgran.

However, any Christmas advert, including this one, is cynical commercialism, encouraging people to spend.
John Lewis care less and less about their customers and their staff.

Rabbitgran Sat 06-Nov-21 19:43:02

Loved it! For those who don't understand, the Christmas theme is welcoming others, extending love and care towards others.
