Yes - definitely join a choir. I have run choirs and singing workshops all my life, and also co-ran community choirs projects for the Three Choirs Festival. I still run my own small community choir which has been going for over 30 years.

It is SO good for you in every possible way: socially, mood, health etc. My choir is not auditioned and we have mostly people who cannot read music (and some who claim they cannot sing - but bring their enthusiasm, which is valued just as highly) to a professional classical pianist. We all muck in and have loads of fun!

I joined a choir a few years ago and it was the best thing I have ever done. I'm no great singer and don't read music but our choir leader is brilliant at sharing useful bits of musical knowledge without us even being aware of it! The whole point of a choir is that it is not reliant on one voice and I just shut up when I make a mistake till I can pick it up again. Everyone covers for each other.

I took part in Gareth's Great British Home Chorus and have recorded online with our own choir. Recording on your own on a phone really is a wake up call and makes you start correcting your own faults but when put together with the whole choir it sounds great. I've also heard some (mostly) pop singers singing on their own without backing and filters and they sound almost as bad as me!!!

Go for it MissAdventure, * Calistemon*, and Calendargirl. It's a brilliant experience.

Just for a little while, there was a programme where people who had terrible voices had speed coaching for a few days and then sang their audition song again.
I only saw 1 or 2 episodes then it must have fizzled out i presume.
I liked it though.

You could be trained

Well, yes maybe, but surely one’s voice needs to be reasonable in the first place?

I can't sing well but was told I could join a choir because the choir master was excellent at 'training' most people to sing.

One of the two teenage girls who sang - the quieter one - has a wonderful clear tuneful voice. I was very impressed with her.

The same as you could be trained to draw or paint. But surely you need a smidgeon of talent for a start?

N.B. I speak as one who can’t draw a stick man, and enjoys singing, sadly no one around me likes listening probably.

We're watching sprouts being harvested hmm

Mollygo Thu 23-Dec-21 21:20:19

That was lovely. I didn’t know I was going to watch it, but once I started . . .

MissAdventure Thu 23-Dec-21 21:19:36

I've just put on Josh widdecombe or however it's spelled - one night in the natural history museum.
Could be amusing, or downright hilarious!

Calistemon Thu 23-Dec-21 21:12:24

I'm missing the Christingle service sad

MissAdventure Thu 23-Dec-21 20:59:01

Oh I don't like these new fangled songs.
I wanted traditional carols.

Calistemon Thu 23-Dec-21 20:55:15

MissAdventure Thu 23-Dec-21 20:54:10

He's easy on the eye, too. smile

Calistemon Thu 23-Dec-21 20:53:16

Stephen, that was wonderful!

EllanVannin Thu 23-Dec-21 20:52:14

Steven's voice is beautiful. He's singing now.

Calistemon Thu 23-Dec-21 20:41:41

You could be trained ......

I can't sing either

MissAdventure Thu 23-Dec-21 20:40:40

I really quite fancy the idea of joining a choir, but I'm really shy about some things, plus I genuinely have a terrible voice.

EllanVannin Thu 23-Dec-21 20:39:05

I think Gareth is great. A real inspiration to people.

Calistemon Thu 23-Dec-21 20:37:01

?????

MissAdventure Thu 23-Dec-21 20:35:05

Oh nooo! Not Shakin Stevens!

Calistemon Thu 23-Dec-21 20:24:37

Is he going to woof?

Calistemon Thu 23-Dec-21 20:24:20

Here's the dog! He's gorgeous

MissAdventure Thu 23-Dec-21 20:10:22

He is going round a hospital, gathering people to sing.
I think this will be another teary eyed one.
I'm getting square eyes!
