Anyone watched “A very British scandal”? Just watched the first episode; tempted to binge watch! A lot of people in it to feel sorry for - adults and children!

Iam you speak of ‘William’s infidelity’, you know it’s true !

Ok alleged infidelity

LauraNorderr Thu 30-Dec-21 11:24:22

The drama under discussion, just like The Crown, is a work of fiction based on some fact, as is most of what we read in our newspapers, see on our television news programmes and pick up on our Twitter feeds. I prefer not to believe anything unless I have first hand knowledge of all the facts.
I am referring to so called celebrity and royal gossip of course NOT to suffering in Afghanistan or world poverty.

I've just been reading about the late Lady Jeanne Campbell, the Duke's daughter from his first marriage. Her life seems to have been as chaotic and sordid as the rest of them.

When does the vicious cycle end?

Aveline Thu 30-Dec-21 10:11:30

I've never envied the aristocracy. Living their empty lives in huge, cold, hard to maintain, unfriendly houses? No thanks. I once read a quote, 'To pay back an enemy simply leave them a large country house'.

Iam64 Thu 30-Dec-21 09:57:15

Urmston, same here.

Beswitched Thu 30-Dec-21 09:53:06

There has never been any proof that William had an affair, and I think it's unfair and irresponsible to be speculating and gossiping about it on a public forum.

Oh no, another outbreak of ageeement with urmstongran

I’m an easy going sort of Pollyanna Iam you’d maybe quite like me in real life.

Ooh, you took me back there, Urmstongran! (Brought up in working class Manchester)

??? me to Kathy - Old Trafford big terraced houses (huge and rented - beautiful property if in a different postcode!). My sister and I even shared one big room downstairs for all our toys & when our small friends in the street called for us we all went into the ‘playroom’. Ha! Sounds so middle class doesn’t it? I remember the rent man calling with his little book. At least we never had to hide behind the sofa! Idyllic childhood, my parents were wonderful. I’ve always felt secure and loved.

This posh lot have so much materially - a car, horses, huge estates, champagne on tap ... but so little in some ways.
I ❤️ my life so no envy on my part.
Just irritation.

Oh no, another outbreak of ageeement with urmstongran ?. I visited Chatsworth for the first time earlier this year. Beautiful grounds but I disliked the house.
I’m not a NT fan, they always seem to have the same kind of awful snobby women working/volunteering.
I also wondered if Kate allegedly weeping during the prep for Harry’s wedding and looking incredibly thin and tense could be linked to her husband’s infidelity, as well as having a small baby

Fwiw, the two if them seem to have worked out a good partnership in their current RF role.

Urmstongran Thu 30-Dec-21 09:36:11

Oh god, Our upstanding William? We’re doomed I tell you.

This case shows up the whole ridiculousness of the hereditary principle where someone gets a title and gets called “ your grace” or whatever through no achievement of their own, they can be a real DISgrace and still get fawned and forelock tugged at for no good reason. Such titles belong in the middle ages. Let’s hope they die out in the not too distant future.

Deep down I know I feel similar to you vegansrock which is why I seem to dislike NT properties, walking around and hearing people cooing over the place. Even beautiful Chatsworth! It’s grating as in ‘look what we’ve got’. It irritates me on some level. Yet honestly I’m happy in my small life, not envious of wealthy people per se at all. Like you say it must be all this hereditary stuff, passed on to the firstborn so as not to dilute the stash.

Meritocracy could be so much better.

And another bugbear (I must be grumpy this morning on my soapbox!) I hate how their employees are called ‘servants’. ‘Staff’ sounds so much better.

The reports started in America, and the journalist in Scotland
claims William is still visiting his mistress wearing a face mask

Wonder who started the story in America

Whitewavemark2 Thu 30-Dec-21 09:27:02

It is reported in Scotland, because William got an injunction against reporting it in England.

What fascinates is that so little seems to have changed, it is just that they have learned to manipulate the media now more to their advantage.

Look at the reports on how William apparently fed the media with stories about his brother’s wife to take the focus away from his affair with Catherine’s friend.

Not pleasant.

Oh! ???
That must’ve worked because that certainly passed me by.
How awful for Catherine (if true).
She did look awfully thin at one stage, perhaps nerves/distress?

Mind you, I bet Ma Middleton would’ve had his guts for garters! One formidable woman.

Maybe it was all speculation as they seem very happy these days.

Anniebach Thu 30-Dec-21 09:19:44

Sorry, and the affair is still going on, reported by an Alex Tiffin
a journalist who lives in Scotland,

There is an Alex Tiffin living in Scotland who was chosen to stand for Labour at a Westminster selection but it was then brought to light that he had been charged with a violent assault
against a pregnant woman.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 30-Dec-21 09:13:54

Yes that’s right ian but I’m honestly not too exercised by the affair - it’s what they do. Although I do find it surprising given his parents history. But I am exercised by the reports of what he was prepared to do to his brother in order to divert the focus.

That I find particularly unpleasant.

Anniebach Thu 30-Dec-21 09:12:18

The allegations first emerged from America, William leaked lies to the media about Harry to cover up talk about an affair.

Iam64 Thu 30-Dec-21 09:07:28

A word of support for Whitewave’s post about the allegation William had an affair with one of his Katherine’s close friends. It seems that friendship ended as a result. The various mags that produce endless photographs of the Norfolk set at gatherings had numerous pics of Kate looking furious in the direction of her ex friend. If my memory is right, it’s alleged to have happened during K’s 3rd pregnancy.

Whaaaat? I didn't believe any of that.

The Grit in the Pearl by Linsy Spence tells the whole story of Margaret’s life and having read it and re-watched the three episodes a number of the events in the programmes make more sense

I’m halfway through. Riveting and depressing in equal measure. How the upper classes flaunt their status and if they have it, wealth. “Man with huge dilapidated castle and bad temper seeks wife with bottomless purse and needy disposition”.

I can’t help but think what us working classes were up to at the time of all this high society living? Ena Sharples in the snug with Minnie Caldwell and Martha Longhurst with their glasses of milk stout comes to mind. Donkey stoning the steps and using the privy in the back yard I suppose.
