Very sad to hear this, a brilliant actor. Remember him in Guess Whose Coming to Dinner, and To Sir With Love. Both brought the hatefulness of racism into our lives. RIP.

'The Defiant Ones' was a powerful movie, a white and back man chained together escape from prison and have to endure all manner of hardships while travelling on foot and still chained together. They had no choice but to work together. That is the one that sticks in my memory.

I wasn't so impressed with "Call me Mr Tibbs", but loved an old early film "The Defiant Ones" with Tony Curtis. If I remember right it was his first Oscar nomination (didn't win) ...... would it maybe have been best supporting actor since I'd imagine Tony Curtis was a bigger name at the time? I should google and appear all intelligent smile

Someone dies and you think "I really wish I'd met that person"

He is one such person.

One of the greats, reaching a great age. I remember him from Guess Who's Coming to Diner, and To Sir With Love. I also remember his wife, Joanna Shimkus in D H Lawrence's, The Virgin and the Gypsy but didn't see her in anything after that.
