I am sitting, having my lunch and watching the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics. I am a sucker for these Opening and CLosing Olympiad Ceremonies, they always bring some tears to my eyes,.

So great to see people from every country in the world coming together in this way.

I do not have a great interest in the winter sports, but the Opening Ceremony has been brilliant

Oh, my experience this morning has certainly whetted my appetite for more. Bring it on.

BlueBelle Sat 05-Feb-22 12:03:44

No not at all not interested

poshpaws Sat 05-Feb-22 12:01:06

Absolutely not. It appals me that any country which so much as pays lip service to the importance of human rights should have athletes representing them in a country - China -which consistently abuses and ignores human rights. (And animal welfare too!)

One of my former pupils Laura Deas who won a medal at the last winter olympics( skeleton bob) is competing. I’ll be cheering her on!!

Larsonsmum Sat 05-Feb-22 11:58:39

Not me.

Always cheer on Team GB, of course. I know a lot of people will disagree with China hosting the Games but for me, sport, religion and politics should never mix. I will watch it for what it is, a celebration of years of commitment from these athletes to compete at the pinnacle of their respective sports.

You sound like someone known to all of us about Olympics back in...oh where was it......oh yes! Berlin1936. IT'S NOT just games and cannot be separated from real life! Politics means'of the people' and it's politics that gets the funding, so flawed case from you. The revelations of abhorrent abuse committed in the pursuit of those "pinnacle" careers is good enough reason alone to switch off don't ya fink?

A definite no from me and I am actually disgusted we are there. Have a look at the Dispatches television programme which will be on 4 On Demand. Sorry if I sound snippy but I really am disgusted that athletes went there.

I'm with you Pepper59 . We all oh and aagh about their labour camps/lies about covid/destruction of democracy in Hong Kong.....then we all cheer our Dumbo athletes when they happily skip over there for their own selfish purposes(its a piece of cheap. Metal!) Of winning/taking part (in what exactly? Massaging the vile ego of the vile commies?) And pretend it's all about sports bringing everyone together.... Apart from those in prison/disappeared/exile. I'm also mildly furious.

No interest and besides I’m on holiday.

Mapleleaf Sat 05-Feb-22 11:31:10

No. Not interested at all.

grannie7 Sat 05-Feb-22 11:28:21

Definitely No

JadeOlivia Sat 05-Feb-22 11:27:38

Absolutely no.interest

It was great to see our local ski champion Dave Ryding, take gold in the slalom races earlier this week. He has worked so hard to win.

Rene72 Sat 05-Feb-22 11:21:02

No, I won’t be watching. China has an appalling record on treatment of humans and animals and I do believe the covid virus was a lab leak. It should never have been allowed to hold the Winter Olympics, full stop!

silversurf Sat 05-Feb-22 11:13:15

The original ethos of the Olympic Games was all about the athletes. All disagreements, wars etc. should be set aside and everything should be about the athletes. So yes, I will be watching in the spirit of the games.
I don’t agree will the policies of many countries, but that isn’t what the Games are about.

Franbern Sat 05-Feb-22 11:11:44

Hmmm.......If countries did not go to other countries due to what they perceive as political issues (as put in their press), then I think there would be less than a handful of countries that could ever stage anything. And, the UK would most definitely not rank amongst those.

I take it that in this way ALL trade deals should be cancelled from countries that do not live up to our HIGH ideals? No flights or boats to go to these. Mind you, on this basis many, many countries would be cancelling their trade deals with UK!!!

Just watched a combo skiing shooting event. Amazing! Their stamina then accuracy and ability to even hold a rifle steady is quite extraordinary. Wow.

Grantanow Sat 05-Feb-22 11:07:48

I won't be watching but then I never watch the Olympics wherever they are.

nipsmum Sat 05-Feb-22 11:06:15

After a lovely holiday in Austria and Germany, when we visited many Ski resorts, I am hooked on watching winter sports. I will get much knitting done over the next 2 weeks while watching Winter Olympics.

MayBee70 Sat 05-Feb-22 11:01:32

HettyBetty

All the snow is artificial, made at a huge environmental cost. Perhaps if there is nowhere suitable with real snow it is time to discontinue the Winter Olympics.

Is there usually snow where it is being held? Or did they choose to have it somewhere without snow? Which is ludicrous.

Nannan2 Sat 05-Feb-22 11:00:00

*country.sorry buttons are playing up.

tictacnana Sat 05-Feb-22 10:59:50

No. I don’t know why we didn’t boycott in protest. Sport is just as political as everything else, otherwise why bother flags? Being there just gives their human rights abuses the thumbs up.

icanhandthemback Sat 05-Feb-22 10:59:34

I will boycott it too. I don't understand it when people say sport should be separate from politics. You won't get much of a response from rogue nations if you don't boycott something that matters to the people. Far better it is sport than taking food from their mouths. I realise that you are supposed to earn from the Olympics but I suspect it is more of a loss leader.

Nannan2 Sat 05-Feb-22 10:59:14

It makes NO sense whatsoever to hold the WINTER olympics in a coubtry without the requirements- i.e actual snow and ice! Its just madness.?

spyder08 Sat 05-Feb-22 10:57:56

I am with Pepper59, HettyBetty and others in saying NO definitely not. We should have boycotted.

Oofy Sat 05-Feb-22 10:57:50

Sent before correcting. Rata not rate.
And I doubt the Chinese politicians will give a fig whether we watch it or not
