I am sitting, having my lunch and watching the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics. I am a sucker for these Opening and CLosing Olympiad Ceremonies, they always bring some tears to my eyes,.

So great to see people from every country in the world coming together in this way.

I do not have a great interest in the winter sports, but the Opening Ceremony has been brilliant

I’m going to watch some events but I don’t watch the opening and closing ceremonies.

Grandmabatty Fri 04-Feb-22 12:48:52

Toddler sitting at the moment so unable to watch it. But hopefully I'll get the highlight later

I am watching the curling just now which had to start before the opening ceremony to fit in all the games. The UK teams are in with a chance of a medal. I don’t think I will bother with the ceremonies.

A definite no from me and I am actually disgusted we are there. Have a look at the Dispatches television programme which will be on 4 On Demand. Sorry if I sound snippy but I really am disgusted that athletes went there.

I don't watch the opening/closing ceremonies but I do like to watch any of the events with Team GB in. I cheer them on - especially if we have a chance of a medal!

I'd settled to watch the opening ceremony and there was a knock on the door. It was D. I hadn't seen her since Christmas so that was the end of that.
The repeated games of the day will be on at 7pm tonight on BBC2 so I'll watch those.
Looking forward to the skating.

Always cheer on Team GB, of course. I know a lot of people will disagree with China hosting the Games but for me, sport, religion and politics should never mix. I will watch it for what it is, a celebration of years of commitment from these athletes to compete at the pinnacle of their respective sports.

Our son lives in China and we asked him if people are excited about the olympics and he said no one is and it barely gets mentioned even on tv.

Urmstongran Fri 04-Feb-22 15:10:30

Not me.

Jaxjacky Fri 04-Feb-22 15:39:01

No.

Deedaa Fri 04-Feb-22 16:15:20

I watched a bit of the opening ceremony and was amused to see the Chinese playing Land Of Hope And Glory. It seemed an odd choice but perhaps they thought that we'd like it.

HettyBetty Fri 04-Feb-22 18:23:58

No, really disappointed that GB didn't have the guts to boycott it. Their possibility of getting a few medals is nothing compared to the human rights abuses.

joannapiano Fri 04-Feb-22 18:31:02

Hear, hear, HettyBetty.

Gwyneth Fri 04-Feb-22 18:55:10

I won’t be watching in protest at China’s appalling human rights record.

MerylStreep Fri 04-Feb-22 18:56:49

No, no, no. ?

Witzend Fri 04-Feb-22 18:58:59

If we win anything, I dare say it’ll be on the news.
Otherwise I won’t be watching. I’m not exactly the biggest fan of China.

Rosie51 Fri 04-Feb-22 19:08:41

I thought I'd be alone in saying no. I love the winter olympics and would normally watch the events, although I don't always bother with the opening and closing ceremonies. Although I know it matters not one jot to the Chinese I'm not watching out of principle. China's human rights abuses in general and especially their treatment of the Uyghurs are vile and disgusting. I'd hope there would be a global rejection by athletes and countries but unfortunately there wasn't.

HettyBetty Fri 04-Feb-22 19:21:00

All the snow is artificial, made at a huge environmental cost. Perhaps if there is nowhere suitable with real snow it is time to discontinue the Winter Olympics.

Lincslass Fri 04-Feb-22 19:31:13

I always feel the Olympics should be staged in Greece, each country participating to contribute to costs. Winter Olympics, well were there is natural snow, again costs to be met by all. Surely more environmentally friendly. No I won’t be watching this from China.

Ragtime Fri 04-Feb-22 20:06:27

No.

CanadianGran Fri 04-Feb-22 20:47:29

I have really mixed thoughts. I think they shouldn't have even had the games in light of the pandemic, and disagree with China's stance on human rights and freedoms, but I also want to support sports and sportsmanship.

I also really enjoy watching some sports that are not usually televised, and cheering on our athletes that have worked so hard to become the best of their chosen sport.

My husband always has sports on the TV, so I will most likely get drawn in to watching some, depending on the time zone differences.

Kali2 Fri 04-Feb-22 20:50:31

No. I feel sorry for the athletes, but no.

Even my favourite, skiing- as I have just seen arial photos of desertic mountains, with just the slopes made of tons of artificial snow only. Sheer madness.

Rosie51 Fri 04-Feb-22 23:43:26

I hadn't even considered any environmental impact of artificial snow etc the human aspect was enough for me. I'd feel so sorry for any athlete who'd withdrawn but would so admire their integrity and humanity. Evil is evil there are no excuses.

lixy Sat 05-Feb-22 08:55:10

I'm watching.
The politics and the environmental concerns take much of the joy away but the athletes show such resolution and courage.
I find the Winter Olympics more awe-inspiring than the Summer ones as the competition is based so much on a skillful use of the elements as well as the athletes' own power and endurance.
