Peaky Blinders

Last series starts tonight. It will be painful watching it without Aunt Polly ( although I understand they are using some previous unseen footage of her to explain her absence). However I watched something on utube that explained what had happened over the previous seasons and realised that, even though I’ve always watched it I really haven’t had a clue what was going on. I wonder if I’ll be any the wiser at the end of this series?

I watched something on BBC3 called, I think, Obsessed with Peaky Blinders that explained a lot of things. I must admit that I didn’t know a lot of the characters eg Johnny Dog. There was an interview with Cillian Murphy last night which I missed. Going to see it it’s on catchup.

The final episode was very good, much better overall than the previous five episodes imo. The mustard gas fight outside the pub was brilliantly staged, the sight of Arthur and Jeremiah in those gas masks was chilling. And how sad was the effect it had on them, I think it really brought home the horror of having lived through fighting in the trenches of WW1.
I still have a few niggles though, how did they find out/know Billy was a traitor? And was it not just a bit too coincidental that the doctor’s estate was where Tommy had made camp, so had quick access to him when he realised the truth?
But mostly, I really wish they’d stop the slo-mo bits, that’s been very over-done throughout this series.
Like others have said, I’m looking forward to the film, if only to see the downfall of the loathsome Mr & Mrs Mosley.

Absolutely fantastic end! Answered so many questions and tied up loose ends. A bit violent - but that’s the Peaky f***** Blinders isn’t it?!

That’s the way to write a last episode!

Whitewavemark2 Mon 04-Apr-22 15:32:25

Wow, just watched the last episode. My goodness you don’t get much more stylish and better written.

At last a series with a clever satisfying ending. I really was on the edge of my seat. And I cried.

Me too, Jaxjacky, I think P.B. will be even more powerful on the big screen.

Jaxjacky Sun 03-Apr-22 22:23:26

Wow! Excellent, thoroughly enjoyed, will look forward to the film.

Good question. As I said previously, I’m not a CM fan, but I think he’s wonderful in PB. I think it probably would have been popular no matter who played Tommy. The acting, writing, costumes, music, cinematography are all excellent imo. Having said that, I do think this final series up to now is lack lustre compared to all the previous ones.

Would the series have taken off the way it has if they hadn’t cast Cillian Murphy as Tommy?

The last episode will be 81 minutes long and will be a trial run for the forthcoming film. Some of the new characters we’ve met in this series will be featured in the film. So I’m thinking Duke (Tommy’s son that he never knew he had until Esme told him), and maybe the Stephen Graham character.

Reading up on TB it did say that one form could spontaneously disappear. Fingers crossed for Tommy….

Jaxjacky Mon 21-Mar-22 10:21:40

Certainly twists and turns last night, enjoying it.

My mother in law was a nurse working on TB wards in Liverpool. She said there were different types and families were wiped out by it in every street at the time in the 1950s.

MayBee70 Mon 21-Mar-22 09:43:33

I’m just finding it depressing especially with all the terrible things happening at the moment. I still love the settings and the acting so I will stick with it. I didn’t realise there were different kinds of TB.

I was beginning to think this last series of Peaky Blinders was rather boring. Until Stephen Graham was in it as a dock worker and marked man. I commented to my husband that he won’t be finished off yet as he never plays a weak character. I am hoping he appears in it again now I am warming to the series again.

I did watch it again last night, lot of it set in Black Country Museum. So very dark and mumbling and I’ve completely lost the actual plot. Looks like it will be the death of Tommy, with his terminal diagnosis. I haven’t any love for any of them, they get what they deserve. I do think Tommys children adorable though, felt so sorry for them.

I enjoyed tonights episode even though it was hearbreaking in parts ,the sound quality needs looking at though as my TV was turned up much higher than normal.I love the style the settings etc ,lots of things I see in old family photos and it looks authentic to me,I must admit I'm not an expert .The music by Sinead O'Connor was hertwrenching andI'm off to see if I can buy it from Amazon

I found tonight's episode hard to follow and found myself loosing interest towards the end. Anyone else feel the same???

grannydarkhair Thu 17-Mar-22 14:23:12

I hope Stephen Graham appears again, it’s very disappointing if that’s all we see of him. Loved Ada this week, especially her scene with Diana and then Mosley/Jack. Also loved her trouser suit outfit. Gina is a very irritating character, I suppose it shows how good an actress she is. Did any Spiral fans recognise that the man Tommy had the fight with in the pub in Miquelon in the second episode was Clement, the Prosecutor/Lawyer?
General consensus on Mumsnet is that this is leading up to the death of Tommy, possibly by Michael. Ruby, when she was first ill, said to him that “the gray man was coming”.

I think the actor who plays Arthur Shelby has the most authentic Brummie accent in the series. I used to find the variable attempts at sounding working class brummie irritating at first but I've got past it now.
My little irritants are that certain phrases I know were current at the time and were used by my grandparents (who were in their 30s and 40s at the time The Peaky Blinders is set,) when I was a child, aren't used in the script.
My son thinks it's OK but for me, if you go to the trouble of getting the clothes, cars and settings right, you should research the the language used too.
I'm thinking terms such as, "Tek care bab." and, "Mind 'ow ya cross the 'orse road."
Wireless for radio and Flicks or Flea Pit for the cinema etc.

Kate1949

I stopped watching after series 2. As a born and bred Brummie, I can't be doing with all the awful Brummie accents.

They are unbelievably bad aren't they?

tanith Mon 14-Mar-22 07:16:48

I’m finding this series slow and clunky not much going on. For its final series it’s unremarkable to say the least. I hope Stephan Graham’s appearance carries on and he comes face to face with Tommy.

Kate1949 Sun 13-Mar-22 23:28:37

There must be some Brummie actors around who could have played some parts. They seem to think if they say 'yow' instead of 'you' it's job done.

MayBee70 Sun 13-Mar-22 23:18:38

I ‘ll stick with it but I still haven’t got the faintest idea what’s going on. And I realised tonight that I do need a bit I’d warmth and humour in a tv series, not constant misery. The accent doesn’t bother me at all, though, a Brummie accent being incredibly difficult to pin down. I couldn’t do a broad Brummie accent if you paid me but I can always pick up on a fellow Brummies accent no matter how un Brummie they sound.
