Gorgeous programmes on BBC2 bit of history bit of geography and mostly FOOD. Mouthwatering would be a huge understatement

I SO wanted to like this programme but, sadly, couldn’t stand Stanley Tucci. ? I liked him much better on the radio …

Reading the title of the thread, I couldn't help mentally answering, " Cross the channel, drive south until you hit the Med, then turn left along the coast. You'll find it eventually."

I'll get my hat.

A lovely programme. We have had many holidays in beautiful Italy and really like the food and the friendly people. Friday supper is Italian in our house. When I was small I was lucky and had an Italian aunt who was a fabulous cook.
My DD has recently told her DH to smarten up and dress like Stanley, we sent SIL his book as part of his birthday present, we have yet to find out how it went but DD definitely enjoyed it.

Fabulous series on fabulous Italy. First visited by me in 1971 on honeymoon and our first experience of Italian cuisine still makes me laugh.
We stayed full board - who does that anymore - in a small hotel, apparently known for it's food. We had no idea about that, just going along with the travel agent's suggestion and, as we were totally clueless, every lunchtime when the waitress would ask "lasagne or soup" and we'd look at each other and go "soup", just perfect for the 90° heat outside!
We did redeem ourselves a bit by being brave one day and ordering lasagne but then spent the rest of our honeymoon kicking ourselves for missing out on all that divine grub. The divine Stanley sums up that divine grub so well.

I have read his book too, such a fascinating man.
I love Italy, I can’t wait to go back again.

Riverwalk absolutely NOT! grin

Absolutely and you could see what an impression it made on him. Understandably so.

Grandmadinosaur And how lovely that Stanley appreciated how lucky he was as a child. It's so disappointing when people are unimpressed by experiences we'd give our eye teeth for

Just want to reiterate what a lovely series it is. Stanley's Italian background means it isn't just another celeb tourist trip and the whole atmosphere is just so relaxing. And the food is wonderful!

I agree Deedaa it really is.

I haven’t watched any episodes since the 2nd one in Rome so I need to catch up. I did watch last nights mainly set in Florence. Oh my how I adore that city. Been twice and is now on my ever growing list to return to. How lucky was he to spend a year living there as a child?

We had lunch yesterday in Rome in one of the restaurants featured in his programme. I had the same dish as Stanley did and can confirm that it was indeed delicious. winkgrin

Not the offal place? shock

I love it as the scenery is fabulous. Same with the Hairy Bikers. But I get so bored with all the food. Now and again would be okay but there's too much of it.

Grandmadinosaur Wed 16-Mar-22 21:53:06

I agree mamaa it is just like being there.

I’m only 2 episodes in but I’ve just read there is a second series coming soon. Brilliant news.

Just stumbled upon this today, on iplayer- its really good.

Marydoll have you seen it- if not you’ll love it too - watching is like actually being in Italy, enjoying the country and its food.

A feast for the eyes in every sense of the word.

Just watching this on iPlayer. When you say "mouthwatering", are we talking about the lovely food or delectable Stanley? ?

Well, Stanley Tucci, Italy and Pasta- what’s not to like? wink

Kate1949 Tue 01-Mar-22 23:30:54

We loved it. We have been lucky enough to visit Italy a few times, including the beautiful Amalfi coast. I love Italy.

A truly lovely programme. I love everything about Italy and this reminds me of the amazing holidays I have had there. Just a joy to watch.
