The Duke

It’s a lovely film and I thought the setting was authentic. Life looked a bit dreary but were people really less happy?

Saw it yesterday, really enjoyed it. Jim Broadbent is a perfect choice as the main character. And much though I love the way Helen Mirren looks and dresses in real life, I liked how there was no attempt made to beautify her in this. I was seven in 1961, but have no memory whatsoever of the event portrayed. And I agree with BigBerthal and Humbertbear that life did look very dreary, which I don’t remember it being.

I certainly don't remember the 1950's/60's as being depressing and dreary. I have many happy childhood memories of that era. Looking back we did not have much in the way of material things but I loved my school days and the friends made (some of whom are still friends today) the freedom we had to go out and play in the street or in the park. no computers or mobile phones just the simple things in life.

I saw this today and highly recommend it... a feel-good film.

Stellar performances by Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren, as expected.

Unlike Bertha I didn't find the portrayal of life in the 50s & 60s depressing - it showed gritty working class life, as in the film 'Belfast', but this time set in Newcastle.

It's based on the real-life story of the theft of a Goya painting of the Duke of Wellington in 1961 and the demand of a ransom to pay the TV licences of pensioners!

If you're intending to see the film don't Google the story as there's an unexpected twist to the tale

Just been to see The Duke. What a fantastic film! My friend and I felt it was one of the best films we’ve seen for a while. Real feel good factor. We loved the sixties decor and music. Highly recommended ?

I enjoy the film too. Love Jim and Helen as actors so would always watch something they are in.

Just been to see The Duke and loved it. Jim Broadbent is always a joy to watch and Helen Mirren was completely believable. So good to see a "star" who doesn't mind being seen lines and all.
