Wow what an emotional start to this series! I know the other episodes are available on iplayer but I'm trying to resist watching them as I enjoy the anticipation of waiting for next week's programme.
What do you all do with a series?

There seemed to be a lot of inter-racial pairings - Oscar and Maya, Rose and James, Xander and Tyler, Goldie and Davey, the lesbians who were having a baby and possibly others I can't remember.

This is a very normal part of modern life. So unremarkable, no one in the series remarked on it.

Spoiler alert -I have watched the whole series.

I thought it was good entertainment, with some engaging plot themes and interesting characters.

However in many ways it did not seem to be based in reality.

There was far to much schmaltz and sentimentality, especially in the central relationships of Ruth and her daughters.

There seemed to be a lot of inter-racial pairings - Oscar and Maya, Rose and James, Xander and Tyler, Goldie and Davey, the lesbians who were having a baby and possibly others I can't remember.

The mixed race pupil barrister complained that only 12,5% of barristers were black or ethnic minority yet this does closely reflect the percentage in the UK population.

Hannah, the central character did in the end let go of her husband who had told her he still loved her. She also had protestations of love from Christy who wanted her to go to New York. She refused as her family was in London.

I think when Xander said he was taking time out and handing over the practice to Hannah, it would have made sense for her to ask Christy to come back to London.

However I think it is probably a plus for a drama that leaves us thinking about how we might have changed the plot. So we'll done Split writers.

I agree Curlywhirly I loved Hannah’s rain mac with all the shoulder detail. Looked very stylish (and expensive!). Isn’t she slim? She looked so different from her appearance in ‘Last Tango in Halifax’.

Yes Urmstongran Nicola Walker looks so different from her character in Last Tango - but somehow she doesn't look like she used to walking in high heels! She seems to 'clomp' in them (was more noticeable in the last series). Mind you, after living in fitflops and flatties through covid lockdown, I'm having the same problem, heels are so alien now ?

BigBertha1 Sat 23-Apr-22 06:25:49

Nicola Walker's lovely camel coat is MaxMara I understand...very expensive.

This series was very watchable but I did think the ending was a bit too sugary and not very realistic. On balance, though, I really enjoyed it.

I assume it's the last series?

Yes I love the clothes. Especially the Mother's. Where does she buy them?

I absolutely loved it.

I’m not sure about how just totally forgiving they all are as a family though?
* SPOILER ALERT***‼️
When the 3 sisters find the box in their mum’s wardrobe? An apology from mum and all just okay? Not very believable.
Wouldn’t happen so smoothly in real life. No estrangement? It’s happened for much less than that in some families.

A couple of other examples come to mind too.
Then I thought ‘stop nitpicking it’s only a drama!’.

Curlywhirly Tue 19-Apr-22 20:37:39

Really enjoying it, love some of the clothes, especially Nicola Walker's outfits.

loopyloo Tue 19-Apr-22 18:27:17

Binge watching this at the moment.
They have such difficult complicated lives so makes me feel mine not too bad!

I like Stephen Mangan too, seems so empathetic, though I know he is an actor playing a role. Have seen him in more comedy roles than straight.

BlueBelle Fri 15-Apr-22 17:57:24

Well I’m being very self contained and watching bit by bit because there’s sweet diddly squit else on at the moment so
I m being very self controlled and enjoying it a lot

I saw all 6 episodes of the current series in about 4 days while I was laid up with covid. Loved it!

Oh me too! I started series one when we had covid and raced through all of them.

Interesting to hear they filmed two endings. I think they picked the wrong one! I had that definite feeling you get at the end of a book, when it isn't the end and really ought to continue.

I know it's been said it's the last series but there's plenty to carry on with for series 4.

Polly73 Fri 15-Apr-22 17:32:33

They seem to be definitely saying it’s the last series, but it seemed to me to end with quite a few cliff hangers. Maybe there’ll be spin off series?

GagaJo Fri 15-Apr-22 17:16:52

I've just finished all 3 series. I loved them and was very sad at the ending. It felt a bit unrealistic to me. I would like to have seen some new beginnings, rather than ending on the hint of them.

No fourth series to come.

Atqui Sat 09-Apr-22 18:54:50

My husband thought it was utterly depressing too!

Grandmadinosaur Sat 09-Apr-22 18:45:38

No he’s isn’t the father of the sisters. If I remember right he’s an old boyfriend of the mother.
I’m currently watching the first episode again with DH as he was in hospital when it went out. I told him he needed to watch it before the next episode on Monday as I wasn’t missing it. He’s moaning it’s a bit depressing. I’ve told him it gets worse.
Apparently they’ve filmed 2 endings to the series. I’m thinking one where they get back together and one where they don’t.

Atqui Sat 09-Apr-22 18:15:23

Ah thanks Polly . I didn’t realise it was his baby. It’s quite a while since the first series. Also, can someone tell me who the mother’ s partner is? I don’t think he’s the sisters ‘ father is he?
( Do try and keep up Atqui )

Can anyone tell me what the name of the dark haired sister is and who is the baby’s father? I can’t remember though I have seen the first 2 series. And is the guy with the silvery beard the boyfriend or ex of the mum whose name I also can’t remember?

Nina (the actress is Annabel Scholey) was pregnant at the end of series 2, after an affair with Tyler (the gay partner of Xander’s) and now has had her baby.
Christie is the suave silver bearded one - he and Hannah (Nicola Walker) were previously together and he still holds a candle for her.

AGAA4 Sat 09-Apr-22 15:34:41

He is in a relationship with the boss Zander. What complicated lives they all have. I have watched the last episode now.

Atqui Sat 09-Apr-22 15:28:12

Isn’t the dark haired single mother “seeing” the fiancé of the the boss - in a same sex relationship ?

vegansrock Sat 09-Apr-22 15:18:40

And is the guy doing the babysitting a new boyfriend of the dark haired sister? Isn’t he engaged to someone else?
