Did you all agree with the result?

I did as it had to be something that could easily be replicated. Well done the winner.

What miseries some of you are. I saw it on TV this morning. I thought it was beautiful and easy to replicate by shop bought things which would make it easy for non cooks like me to make. It looked fun.
The jelly v no jelly is such a silly purist argument.
Let’s celebrate and not look for faults.

When I was still working, students and staff ate together at lunch time. One of the recurring themes was whether trifle should have jelly in it!

Visgir1 Fri 13-May-22 11:51:55

I watched on catch up this morning, and defo going to give it a go.
I will make the lemon curd and my own Swiss Roll, possibly the custard.
And buy the rest. Worth a bash.

I cannot see this pudding going down in culinary history like Coronation Chicken etc. I admit I didn't watch the competition itself and only saw the winning cake on the news. I personally think it looks a mess, the layers are uneven, there shouldn't be jelly in it and the shards on top look unnecessary. The sugar levels must be off the scale so I certainly won't be making it.

Yammy Fri 13-May-22 11:02:11

Not the trifle for me either. If it was meant to be easily replicated the crown would have been the easiest for me and look appropriate or the tart.
Trifle is loved by many people but everyone has their own idea of what should be in it and tinned mandarins yuk! Sunday tea as a child tinned mandarins and tinned Nesle cream.hmm

Septimia Fri 13-May-22 10:51:54

Didn't see the programmes but wouldn't have voted for the trifle as I really don't like them!!

lixy Fri 13-May-22 10:44:17

They say you learn something every day, and today I have learned that some people don't have jelly in their trifle! It have never crossed my mind that such a thing existed.
In my family cake, raspberry jam, jelly, custard and cream are the basis. Some fresh raspberries in and on top if we have them. Sometimes glace cherries and flaked almonds to decorate. We used to use angelica to make leaves for the cherry 'flowers' but can't find that anywhere except online now. It's all very retro!

I would have voted for the tart I think, though the fancy sponge cake did look like a real party cake.

I'm another in the NO JELLY camp!
Citrus jelly is fine but this concoction spoils two otherwise tasty puds - a proper trifle and a jelly!

Antonia Fri 13-May-22 10:30:17

It looked delicious and well done to the winner.

I thought the other cakes were fantastic too, but the brief was that it should be fairly easy to bake at home, and I thought the other cakes were very complicated.

^I can hear DH now - isn't there any sherry in it?^

Do you think sherry trifle might be in our DNA? grin

It's in his!
With raspberries of course.

Callistemon21 Fri 13-May-22 10:00:53

Also -this might not be popular - jelly has no place in a trifle.

Try telling that to DH and SIL!

I have made proper trifles but DH says they aren't proper trifles

Shelflife Fri 13-May-22 09:04:23

I agree , jelly should not be in a trifle! Delia’s trifles are amazing. Having said that I thought the trifle would win . Easy to assemble ( buy the Swiss roll) . All 5 puddings looked delicious, yes , it would be lovely to have all 5 recipes.

Aveline Fri 13-May-22 09:03:13

I'll be making a cheats version. Bought Swiss roll, lemon jelly, amaretti biscuits, tinned custard and mandarin segments. I can even break up some white chocolate bits. It's not the gourmet version but is more possible to assemble by non cooks/bakers among us. Coronation chicken mutated a lot over the years I suspect this citrussy 'trifle' will too. We're not all pudding purists.

I hate jelly!

I think the winning entry is a mess (and I don’t mean Eton Mess)
Too fussy, too many flavours, too many elements, typical of the sort of “showstopper” featured on programmes like Great British Bake-Off - and decorated to death.
Also -this might not be popular - jelly has no place in a trifle.

Absolutely Maw. There should no jelly in a trifle! When my son was last home he made the trifle from my Cordon Bleu Cookery book. He made proper custard and proper Madeira style sponge cake for the base. Perhaps he should have entered the competition.

Surely if you were first in line for your pud to be tasted, the judges would be keener on it than if you were last?

Some of the ‘tastings’ looked quite large. By the time you got to number 5, personally I would be longing for something
savoury to take away all that yummy sweetness though.

Mary Berry did say she had not had any breakfast in anticipation.

Yangste1007 Thu 12-May-22 23:40:13

I thought the whole thing was ridiculous. I thought the idea was for the pudding/dessert to be simple and easily replicated by folk at home. There is no way I would bother making any of those offerings.

Teacheranne Thu 12-May-22 23:24:20

I’ve read the recipe and I won’t be making it - the thought of making my own lemon Swiss roll, lemon curd, jelly using gelatine and the shards on top puts me off!

Think I’ll get a Bird’s Trifle mix …

Oh my goodness I’ve made a few of those in the past because our younger son didn’t like cream, so has our DIL since he got married but a few years ago on holiday in Cornwall he decided he liked clotted cream and now he eats anything with cream in so no more Bird’s trifles thank goodness for all concerned.

crazyH Thu 12-May-22 22:52:07

No, that wasn’t my favourite. Tart, for me too.

Blossoming Thu 12-May-22 22:51:47

A lemon curd tart would be lovely.

Callistemon21 Thu 12-May-22 22:48:16

I'd have to adapt it - no amaretti biscuits, no white chocolate
......

I do like citrussy puds though.
