Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

Weird. Didn't know what to make of it. Understood a bit more once I read the blurb in the Radio Times, but it is still weird.
Controlling men, yes, daily humdrum of marriage, yes.
They don't talk about their emotions, but squabble about a jacket potato.
Lots of unanswered questions.
Strange directing, apparently doing dozens of takes on loadng the dishwasher.
I want to watch it tonight but doubt DH will want to.

Just watched episode one. Can’t remember ever feeling so uncomfortable watching a programme. I’m going to carry on watching it to make sense of it but, as has been pointed out, it’s neither a drama or a comedy. It’s actually given me the creeps to be honest.

Beechnut, did you think it improved as it went on?

No not just you tanith

I’m in trouble for making Mr GD miss the second hour of Van Der Valk for that ?

Van der Valk was very boring!!

I’m usually on my I pad while DH watches VDV I just like to see the locations in Amsterdam!

We gave up on it and went to bed early.

nadateturbe Mon 15-Aug-22 14:46:23

We all have different tastes.
I loved the Detectorists and my son thought it was rubbish.
Loved This Country and The Office.

Calendargirl Mon 15-Aug-22 14:41:58

It’s not supposed to be funny though, is it?

My tv review guide describes it as ‘bittersweet domestic dramedy’ which I assume means drama/comedy, in one section, then on another page it is simply ‘a new comedy drama’.

To me , neither a comedy nor a drama,

very cringeworthy, slow, boring, a waste of an hour, but i will watch tonights though in the hope that it improves, despite there being few favourable votes on here!

i didn't watch mum so can't compare but it's much like the opinion i had of the office which also had many devotees

It's not supposed to be funny, though, is it?
I haven't watched it yet but posts on here don't give me the impression that it's a comedy.

I found both The Office and This Country funny but DH didn't like either.

Beechnut Mon 15-Aug-22 14:27:08

I’ve binged it all… and I don’t know why?

Jaxjacky Mon 15-Aug-22 14:25:43

We watched Van der Valk, good enough for a Sunday evening and I’ve liked Marc Warren since he was in Hustle.
I’ll follow your reviews of Marriage here.

I found it a disappointing watch it was completely boring monotonous and non entertaining.

Not sure but think the second episode of Shetland is on tonight so will be watching that instead.

fairfraise Mon 15-Aug-22 14:04:52

Viagirl and others, the original van der Valk is on Talking Pictures on Tuesdays at 9pm. They're great, fast moving and so 80s in dress and decor.

Alioop Mon 15-Aug-22 13:43:41

I watched Van Der Valk, which I'm enjoying, so I recorded Marriage and caught up with it this morning. I really didn't think much of it and unsure if I'll carry on watching it. I found Sean Bean a bit creepy....in fact they are both odd in it.

I'm afraid I gave up after 10 minutes, found it very boring.

'The Secrets She Keeps', also on I Player is good and well worth watching.

Kim19 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:40:32

Well...... don't know if I'm desprate or insane but I binge watched the whole series (4). Certainly nothing like my experience or concept of married life in maturer years. Really disappointed that Nicola Walker chose to do this. Quite awful in my humble opinion. Look forward to reading the comments of anyone who enjoyed this.

Nanamary19 Mon 15-Aug-22 12:32:56

All episodes are avalible on iplayer no need to wait for 9pm tonight

NanOf8Girls Mon 15-Aug-22 11:58:34

I'm no expert but it seems to be portrayal of how having a covert (now elderly) controlling parent (Emma's dad) has influenced the type of man Emma chose as a life partner. Emma has been suppressed by both her brother and dad. She pretends all is jolly and ok. Ian her husband covertly wraps Emma in cotton wool, but is too weak to deal with the emotional stuff going on. So he treads on eggshells and Emma does too with her coercive dad and resentful brother. It seems Jess (their daughter) has picked a similarly narcisisstic boyf who seeks to control her. It seems to be a cycle of unsaid tension that won't end well. Just my opinion.

Mine Mon 15-Aug-22 11:58:10

I'm not sure if I enjoyed or not...It was very strange viewing....I kept waiting for Sean Bean to erupt and throw things about or shout and swear.... Mmmmm.... maybe watch eposide 2 before I fully decide weather to bin it or keep watching

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:51:07

VIsgirl for some unknown reason I can still hum the signature tune of van de valk. Can’t think why, it was first on years ago but was quite catchy. Tra la la smile

silverlining48 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:47:55

Well I quite enjoyed it Juliet. Rather reminded me of my dh and me, just with less hand holding. It’s a slow burn and would have thought similar to many marriages.
I watched the second part of Indian partition on 4+1 afterwards and found that interesting. The fact that it used the original film with added colour made it very watchable.

Juliet27 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:36:27

Would anyone dare say they enjoyed it after all those comments? I’ve not watched it …mainly because I forgot, but it doesn’t sound an enjoyable prospect.

Visgir1 Mon 15-Aug-22 11:35:16

I was going to leave for a bit, but not sure I will bother now. Normally Sean Bean and Nicola Walker are both very watchable.

Must say, We are liking Van Der Valk, I don't remember seeing the original series, just know the music.
