Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

Beechnut

I found one part in the last episode kind of odd. I won’t say what it was so as to not spoil it for those who carry on watching. Maybe it’s me but I look forward to someone explaining that part.

Probably the same bit as me, Beechnut.

Was it relevant anyway?

I liked Mum, but Marriage did not seem to be about anything in particular. Nothing much happened I wondered if it was meant as slow TV a sort of relaxing meditation.

Sara1954 Mon 15-Aug-22 21:19:10

I don’t think I like it, it’s embarrassing.
But I feel compelled to keep watching

henetha Mon 15-Aug-22 21:41:21

I thought Mum was beautifully written and acted. I liked it's quirkiness.
Marriage has yet to grab me...but I'll keep watching and hoping.

Another lot of twaddle and why does she need to swear so much.

merlotgran Mon 15-Aug-22 22:16:50

I can’t believe how long it took her to make a couple of sandwiches! ?

Abitbarmy Mon 15-Aug-22 22:40:13

I loved watching ‘Mum’ and also Him and Her that was written by SG. That was all humdrum boring conversations and lots of silences but it was also very funny. Marriage definitely isn’t funny and makes for quite uncomfortable viewing somehow but I might jump to the last episode having read a review on the whole thing.

MayBee70 Mon 15-Aug-22 22:47:06

I totally missed Him and Her: not sure why..

SuzieHi Mon 15-Aug-22 22:50:02

Husband went to watch other Tv within 10 mins! I carried on viewing. Not great, banal conversation, lots of unsaid pent up emotions, quite slow but intriguing. Will watch more to see what happens next.
Ps Sean Bean is so dull / old in this! Guess that is the downtrodden character/ man lacking self esteem.

Didn't like Mum, this was worse though, I think it's the worst programme I have ever watched,, turned me off Sean Bean, I had to keep watching as thought it must buck up and ice watched everything with Sean I'm, not a big fan of Nicola I think she always looks miserable but she can't help it.

Kate1949 Mon 15-Aug-22 23:22:10

Well I thought it was great.

Redhead56 Tue 16-Aug-22 00:52:58

It is so like Mum which I loved so much with unusual and awkward characters in a family. Only giving out small snippets of the family situation which made it interesting.
It's slow deliberately but it's also addictive and like a good book you have to get to know the characters. Its not a regular soap that's shallow and predictable. It's a slow burn drama with complex relationships.

BlueBelle Tue 16-Aug-22 05:50:02

Well I ve caught up with it on my iplayer and I m with you Kate I throughly enjoyed it
It’s not supposed to be a fast moving drama it’s slow on purpose and for a reason and will come to light as it goes along
I think they are both playing their parts brilliantly
It’s been written in a different way to the dramas we usually watch

Beechnut why not talk about what ever puzzled you, that’s what this thread is for, anyone who isn’t watching it or not caught up yet shouldn’t be reading this thread should they ?

I thought it was good too, but puzzled by the ending . I watched all four episodes on bbc iPlayer.
Dont know why people are saying it wasn’t funny, it wasn’t meant to be ! Or complaining that Sean B wasn’t attractive enough in it. Good scting all round I thought.

Sara1954 Tue 16-Aug-22 06:30:31

I watched episode 1 to the end, uncomfortable viewing for sure. Nicola’s character was really annoying, those awful laughs.
The whole thing sad, and depressing, but I think I’ll carry on with it.

This has been discussed before, but not everyone binge watches, so if someone who has watched all the episodes before regular transmission then goes on to blab about the last episode, it’s spoilt for those who are watching it weekly or whatever.

I admire Beechnut for respecting that, unlike so many others.

Calendargirl Tue 16-Aug-22 07:08:28

Should have said ‘applaud’ Beechnut, not admire, but I’m sure she won’t mind either way.

Lucca Tue 16-Aug-22 07:23:56

Don’t think anyone has given anything away on this thread have they ?

Absolutely agree Calendargirl. It is appallingly rude to spoil a programme for others who have yet to finish watching it.

Gingster Tue 16-Aug-22 07:43:46

I enjoyed the first episode but the second irritated me. Sean bean is annoying, pathetic and really a bit creepy. Nicola walker manic - and that false laughter ?! They are very awkward with each other - married 27 years! ?. Snogging at the railway station! ?
I will continue watching but ………

BlueBelle Tue 16-Aug-22 07:47:13

I apologise I didn’t realise Beechnut had binge watched until I read back yes completely agree we shouldn’t talk about future episodes My mistake

Sara1954 Tue 16-Aug-22 07:49:49

Gingster
I agree with everything you said, I gave only watched episode one, but it’s so embarrassingly awkward.

No, they haven’t, and BlueBelle has acknowledged and apologised for her comment.

Thanks BlueBelle.

Sago Tue 16-Aug-22 08:02:53

I loved it!
Watched 2 episodes and will hopefully finish this evening.
Nicola Walkers character is totally manipulated by the 4 men in her life and the only thing that’s probably keeping them together is shared grief.
I have no idea where it’s going to go but looking forward to finding out.

Maggiemaybe Tue 16-Aug-22 09:00:17

Yes, I found the first two episodes intriguing, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the series progresses, soon I hope. I think it’s going to be the sort of drama that stays with you, not one you forget as soon as it’s done. I do agree that the sound’s all over the place. We’ve had to use subtitles, and some of the things allegedly said just aren’t audible at all at a normal volume level.

What a horror the father is, and the boyfriend, and the work colleagues. In fact, it’s all a bit depressing - I’m hoping for the clouds to lift a bit before the end.

For some reason, the Radio Times bills it as a comedy drama. I can’t see it myself.
