Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

It’s growing on me! Actually plan to see next episode on iPlayer.

Callistemon21 Tue 16-Aug-22 17:11:59

There's obviously a big elephant lurking in the corner so will it start suddenly go on the rampage?

Sara1954 Tue 16-Aug-22 21:59:54

Watched episode two tonight, found it even cringier than episode one, Ian is horrible, he gives me the creeps, but it’s a bit addictive, and I shall watch to the end.

MayBee70 Tue 16-Aug-22 22:05:07

Oh dear. I’m just about to start episode 2!

nadateturbe Tue 16-Aug-22 22:14:03

We gave up 20 minutes into episode 2, and we are not easily bored! ? so disappointing.

varian Tue 16-Aug-22 23:26:47

What's all this "to the right, to the left" stuff?

MayBee70 Tue 16-Aug-22 23:45:06

It’s excruciating. And making me feel a bit depressed. I just feel I have to exorcise it by watching all of it. And there are so many series that I haven’t watched yet eg The Outlaws season 2. I thought each episode would just be half an hour long. Things like this need to have that touch of humour to make it work but there is none.

Sago Tue 16-Aug-22 23:48:59

Seen all 4, great stuff, however any previous “stirrings” I may have had after watching Sean Bean have gone for ever.

Thank heavens Rufus Sewell didn’t get the part, I’d have been all out of fantasies?

Redhead56 Tue 16-Aug-22 23:49:28

I have not watched the last episode yet. I am assuming the 'to the left to the right' noise going on in the background. Is chaos in the characters mind caused by the loss of their child. Both of them struggling with the past which has shaped their rigid personalities.

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 05:59:39

At least now I know to turn the volume down before all the to the left to the right business.
Maybe70, what did you think of episode two?

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 06:12:33

Sorry, I see you have already given your verdict, I agree, I find it depressing.

Calendargirl Wed 17-Aug-22 07:28:39

Only watched episode 2 last night.

It seems to me the writer has to make his female characters, this and ‘Mum’, into absolute doormats.

Why did Emma set to making her nasty old dad a ham and tomato sandwich, when he reckoned his oven wouldn’t work? He could have made his own, or waited until the brother came back from wherever he was.

I agree that this role is making me review my opinion of Sean Bean. He comes across as rather sad, a bit creepy, and he and Nicola Walker don’t look a pair at all.

I shall keep watching, but it’s not my idea of marriage by any means.

A good advert for staying single.

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 08:07:48

I wouldn’t like to know either of them in real life, he is so creepy, and she is really brittle and prone to stupid bursts of laughter.
Sad lives.

Kandinsky Wed 17-Aug-22 08:32:20

* spoiler alert if you haven’t watched it yet!

I think it’s showing the ( unspoken) devastation they’re both still feeling 20, possibly 30, years on from the still birth of their son. A lot of unresolved grief, anger, resentment, hence their personalities.
I’m sure they’ll be a 2nd series.

Luckygirl3 Wed 17-Aug-22 09:21:04

Watched a bit yesterday on catch-up - drying paint springs to mind. And the acting is so stilted. Quite dreadful. Guardian review says it is "pitch perfect" - each to his own I guess!!

Shirley48 Wed 17-Aug-22 09:29:22

Yes, I’ve noticed a couple of good reviews in newspapers / online - I find it really odd that critics are fairly positive and overall the general viewing public are not so keen, to put it mildly.
A second series Kandinsky - please, no!

toscalily Wed 17-Aug-22 09:30:19

We recorded both episodes, beginning at the airport the sound was terrible, impossible to listen to so on with the subtitles, 20 minutes in and we looked at each other and decided we could not be bothered to watch anymore. I have never been a great fan of Sean Bean but usually like Nicola Walker, this was boring & dull and the swearing annoyed me too.

Shirley48 Wed 17-Aug-22 09:53:43

I felt the swearing didn’t “go” with her character - she didn’t seem to me like the sort of person who would be saying the f word so much

Calendargirl Wed 17-Aug-22 10:26:37

Probably Emma’s swearing and prolific use of the ‘F’ word is to compensate for being such a doormat in other respects.

Zoejory Wed 17-Aug-22 10:31:16

We're watching the 2nd now and no idea why. It's horrendous. If people believe marriage to be like this I'm amazed anyone bothers to do the deed.

Deadly boring and they've managed to make Sean into a boring old sod

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 10:41:01

I agree with everything that’s been said, it’s depressing, it’s boring, the sound is terrible, the characters are horrible, and yet I think I will watch to the end.
What I can’t understand is, why two high profile actors thought it would be a good idea to make this program.

Lesley60 Wed 17-Aug-22 11:19:56

What a waste of two good actors I watched all the episodes of this thinking it was going to get better but unfortunately no such luck, it was like watching paint dry so boring

Bea65 Wed 17-Aug-22 11:28:01

Sorry thought it was totally boring and love both these actors- Nicole's laughter at everything and the use of the Fword was soo irritating..Sean was creepy and ugh....best actor was the 'normal' daughter and the 2 boyfriends..won't be watching any new series...

Ladyinspain Wed 17-Aug-22 11:31:50

People these days are used to their "dramas" being full of action, sex, slick characters, multiple storylines, violence, and ....Drama!! The whole point of Marriage, is the NORMALITY of married life at around 30 years and more! It is a hard job for an actor, to portray the mundane!! I am enjoying its simplicity!

Philippa111 Wed 17-Aug-22 11:32:41

I've watched all of the episodes now on iplayer. It was such a shock how boring it was in the first episode, as I like Sean Bean ( especially in Ken Russells 'Lady Chatterly' ) and love Nicola Walker and yes, it seemed stiff and quite amateurish to begin with.. I did persevere and have watched all of the episodes. It got better but yes what a waste of talent. I loved Mum and it had some of the same flavour but lacked seasoning. I won't be going back for a second helping!
