Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

I've just moved the shoes in our hallway a few inches ....help!!!

Episode 1 meant to say.

Kandinsky Wed 17-Aug-22 13:42:13

Ellie Anne

It was explained in episode 4 about the child they lost & when they adopted Jess - did you actually watch it? grin

Ellie Anne Wed 17-Aug-22 13:38:59

I enjoyed mum but found this a bit slow. Would have liked to see the headstone on the grave to understand better and wondered if Jess was adopted. Will stick with it anyway.

I've finished it. Loathed it. All of it. Especially the music that kept popping up. Very loudly.

Someone mentioned marmite
Definitely.

And I hate both Marmite and this programme.

Have watched two episodes and finding it a slog. I get the point that the banal conversations are substitutes for tackling their real feelings and it's in their actions that we get hints of what is really going on for them. But... OMG, it is tediously slow. These days I have a tendency to fall asleep in front of TV so I've not much chance of getting to the end of this. Awful dissonant music - as if we hadn't already picked up on the dissonance of the marriage. Assuming I keep awake I will watch the rest if only to test some of my theories about their "back story". Recently watched the Australian series "The Newsreader" based around a 1980s TV newsroom - much more engaging.

I enjoyed watching the body language and subtle facial expressions. I can understand why the long silences might be boring but there can be a lot going on even when the writing is so economical. I think the viewer has to do the work of reading between the lines. It's obviously a marmite thing.

I thought for an awkward couple they kissed and hugged too much. I'm waiting for everything to kick off!

MayBee70 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:59:18

I don’t remember which episode it was but I don’t think someone who was a bit ocd would drink milk straight from the carton.

homefarm Wed 17-Aug-22 12:59:08

I thought it was very realistic. Been there , done that - no hope really. I shall watch it to the end.

Treetops05 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:59:07

No, I'm not, I find many of these make my blood run cold with boredom...and totally agree with you on Mum x

MayBee70 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:57:05

Going to watch the last episode later today. Hope the last episode makes some sort of sense of it all. It’s been a very weird viewing experience thus far!

TanaMa Wed 17-Aug-22 12:57:03

Used to love Sean Bean in Sharpe but he doesn't excite me as an actor in this series. Love Nicola Walker but just wish the script didn't call for her using the F word so much - even though the word is used more and more on t.v. I still find it unnecessay for women to use it - I was always told that swearing indicated a person didn't have an intelligent vocabulary!!

MeowWow Wed 17-Aug-22 12:42:37

I’ll be watching. Sean Bean is nothing to look at but there’s something about him that draws me to him. I think he’s an excellent actor. Nicola Walker is an amazing actress too so I’m looking forward to watching Marriage. Hope I’m not disappointed.

HannahLoisLuke Wed 17-Aug-22 12:39:27

Not planning to watch. From what I’ve read it’s all about the bickering. Don’t need that.

Kate1949 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:38:03

Oh yes bin day is exciting around here Kandinsky. We don't actually argue much but the other day we had a heated debate about the food bin!

Yogamum Wed 17-Aug-22 12:37:38

Not for me, sorry. I’m forced to watch it as my DH loved it. The theme tune (if could call it a tune) hurts me ears. I keep waiting for it to get interesting

esgt1967 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:32:10

I really didn't enjoy The Marriage and my husband absolutely HATED the music! I usually like Sean Bean and Nicola Walker is usually fairly good in her roles (although always a bit one-dimensional/talks the same way) but this "drama" was awful. I don't need to see how boring marriage can be, I experience that every day! Seriously though, couldn't see the point of the whole thing, no real plot and the continuity/scene changes were dreadful.

LilyoftheValley Wed 17-Aug-22 12:31:45

slow moving and dull. disappointed for Nicola Walker. Sean Bean was mumbling along, Highly over rated actor. His jaws whilst eating w ere so mobile that I thought they might unhinge!! . yucky!!

Otis Wed 17-Aug-22 12:29:38

I thought it was boring and very unrealistic to a marriage situation. Shan't be watching any more of it.

PollyDolly Wed 17-Aug-22 12:17:23

Nicolenet

Bad acting, story has no depth. Why do I bother?

Sorry, I don't agree, I think there is a depth developing. Ive watch 2 episodes on demand and we had a long chat about it last evening - both agree that the characters are developing and some true colours beginning to reveal - don't like the daughters boyfriend, very coercive and manipulative man.
There's a great deal of relevance to the series I think

WendyD Wed 17-Aug-22 12:15:25

I found nothing in the first episode to entice me to continue the series. I am so sad because Nicola Walker has been in several series about marriage and families that have been tremendous, but in this she has been neutered and I can't understand a word Sean Bean says. Forgettable.

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:12:20

Panda patch
Same here, I’m strangely compelled to keep viewing

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:10:50

Oh God, if my marriage was remotely like this I would have walked years ago.
I know it becomes mundane, but they are so false and awkward with each other, it makes me sad, everything about it is sad.
I will continue to watch to the end, because there are obviously things to learn, but there is not one character I feel any affection for.
