Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

I m loving it spoke to my daughter and my work mate and they re both loving it too
I agree susieq it’s all the underlying not spoken things that make it so intriguing ….one of the best I ve seen for a long time
It makes you enquire and think and imagine I think it’s extremely well play it must be so much easier to play a full on loving or nasty shouting part than have to play an
such an underwhelming partnership
Purposely not binge watching as I want to look forward to it

Well I’ve watched 3 and will watch 4 soon. It’s a bit different. But I don’t think the swearing fits in with the characters.

Doodledog Wed 17-Aug-22 16:01:50

I am away just now and don't have access to iPlayer other than on devices, so am going to wait till I get home and binge it. I didn't enjoy the first episode, but will give it a chance.

Bluedaisy Wed 17-Aug-22 16:03:20

Tanith, no I agree it was extremely slow to the point I was getting annoyed and bored. Don’t think I shall bother carrying on watching, such a shame as I was looking forward to it.

Camelotclub Wed 17-Aug-22 16:04:34

A friend watched this and said it was very banal with awful dialogue. I said that was like most marriages! TV drama these days seems to be either mutilated women and detectives with dysfunctional private lives or banality like this Marriage, reflecting back to us what our lives are like. I say bring back Dr Foster! That one was good.

Doglessfornow Wed 17-Aug-22 16:15:39

I was bored out of my mind! Love both the actors, Bute erytime I woke up, there was another meaningful silence. I’d rather watch paint dry, or Sean Bean “doing it for Yorkshire“!

Rosy2 Wed 17-Aug-22 16:21:01

Watched the first episode and thought that I couldn’t bear the slowness anymore but binged watched today and got to grips with it and it’s poignancy. Really enjoyed it so glad I returned and gave it a go.

SparklyGrandma Wed 17-Aug-22 16:21:04

Well, I am glad I am single. Boring or what.

I think that their body language doesn’t gel together for me….

Nana4 Wed 17-Aug-22 16:35:58

So dull and disappointing, shame because they are actors I looked forward to watch….. as someone said, my husband and I are thrilling company next to these two …. Bring on the Royle Family, that was excellent, Catherine Aherne was brilliant.
Can’t be bothered to watch the rest but I guess I’ll give it a go ?‍♂️ One lives in hope !!!!!

madeleine45 Wed 17-Aug-22 16:36:17

Very disappointed . I have liked Nicola Walker in a lot of things and have been fed up with the endless games and athletics on the tv and looking forward to a play at last but SO SLOW, couldnt be bothered to watch it any more.

Nana4 Wed 17-Aug-22 16:41:55

Rubysong, that made me laugh !!! Just know what you mean. I kept commenting to my husband how untidy and boring their bedroom etc were !!! I mean, ….. so dull, let’s hope it improved though ??

Kate1949 Wed 17-Aug-22 16:49:21

That's it in a nutshell BlueBelle.

Agree it’s awful and very disappointing as I liked Mum (although I did find it frustrating and longed for her to tell her dreadful son and her brother’s hideous gf a few home truths). It just doesn’t ring true at all - I don’t know anyone who swears all the time like Emma - am I odd? And if she’s a solicitor, what’s she doing working in that horrible office with an idiot boss that acts like a 15 year old? And what was the scene in the pub with the girl from the leisure centre taking too long in the toilet and then suddenly being engaged all about? Have to mute the sound immediately the horrendous ‘music’ comes on.

MayBee70 Wed 17-Aug-22 18:00:59

Well that’s 4 hours of my life I’ll never get back. The last episode didn’t make anything clearer. I hope they don’t do another series because I’ll probably watch that too. If it was making a point about something I don’t understand what the point was.

Jane43 Wed 17-Aug-22 20:26:38

This is obviously a ‘Marmite’ series, I have watched it all now and thought it was very good. I loved the way the different relationships were slowly revealed by what was said and what wasn’t said. I felt for Nicola Walker’s character who constantly tried to please her father (it was nice to see James Bolam again) and got nothing in return especially when he accused her of deserting him when she went on holiday - that was very close to home for me.

SachaMac Wed 17-Aug-22 21:44:27

I’m looking forward to watching this, very mixed reviews on here though. I usually enjoy anything with Sean Bean or Nicola Walker in. I have series recorded so will probably binge watch.
I also enjoyed Mum, some great acting, it was gentle comedy but just drew you in. I liked the theme tune too.

What was interesting was how sweet and friendly he was with other people but so grumpy with his family. My FIL was like that.

Sara1954 Wed 17-Aug-22 21:58:20

SachaMac
I doubt very much you’ll like the theme tune to this.

Chestnut Wed 17-Aug-22 23:56:09

Just attempted to watch the first episode and gave up after 5 minutes when they were on the airplane and the most dire music I've ever heard started playing. I was bored already and knew it wasn't for me. Just been rivetted by The Newsreader (Australian) which was in another realm altogether and just wonderful. I don't want to watch the minutiae of people's lives, I want an interesting plot.

MayBee70 Thu 18-Aug-22 01:23:42

There are so many things that just don’t make sense. Not sure whether to start another thread specifically for people that have watched all 4 episodes so we can discuss the many loose ends?

ruthie2 Thu 18-Aug-22 04:06:05

Not even these two excellent actors could make this interesting. It just kept going round in circles. I won't be watching the rest.

Sara1954 Thu 18-Aug-22 07:36:06

Well I have now watched all four, just wanted to get it over and done with.
I found episode four the most difficult to watch, it was excruciatingly awkward, the forced fake, relationship between Ian and Jess was unbearable to watch, with all those bursts of fake laughter.
I was slightly moved by the ‘Jess box’ but then my teeth were set on edge again by the veg peeling.
And what was all that itching about?
My verdict, awful!
It had the same weird cringing quality as The Office with none of the humour.

BlueBelle Thu 18-Aug-22 07:45:32

I haven’t binge watched but so far I m totally with you Jane it’s what’s not said or done that makes this so interesting It’s deeper than the average drama and really gets you thinking It’s like an abstract picture it’s the bits left out that are so intriguing
Definitely marmite viewing and I love marmite

Netty63 Thu 18-Aug-22 09:16:12

Well said BlueBelle. I have watched it all! Deep and interesting.

MayBee70 Thu 18-Aug-22 09:43:13

I don’t think it was deep. I think it tried to be deep but failed. Everything about it was just emptiness. Even the most boring of boring people don’t have conversations like the people in this series. I feel the writer took all the things from Mum that did work and devised a different series using the same formula.. I’ve never actually watched The Office because I hate watching anything where people are made to feel awkward.
