Who’s planning on watching this tonight on BBC1 at 9pm?

Starring the gorgeous Sean Bean and Nicola Walker.

Only snag, it’s written by the same bloke who wrote ‘Mum’, which most other GN’ers loved, and I thought was a load of nonsense.

I know I was in the minority.

Hope his latest effort is more to my taste.

But with Sean in it..,..smile?

I’ll be watching. Sean Bean is nothing to look at but there’s something about him that draws me to him. I think he’s an excellent actor. Nicola Walker is an amazing actress too so I’m looking forward to watching Marriage. Hope I’m not disappointed.

Used to love Sean Bean in Sharpe but he doesn't excite me as an actor in this series. Love Nicola Walker but just wish the script didn't call for her using the F word so much - even though the word is used more and more on t.v. I still find it unnecessay for women to use it - I was always told that swearing indicated a person didn't have an intelligent vocabulary!!

Going to watch the last episode later today. Hope the last episode makes some sort of sense of it all. It’s been a very weird viewing experience thus far!

No, I'm not, I find many of these make my blood run cold with boredom...and totally agree with you on Mum x

homefarm Wed 17-Aug-22 12:59:08

I thought it was very realistic. Been there , done that - no hope really. I shall watch it to the end.

MayBee70 Wed 17-Aug-22 12:59:18

I don’t remember which episode it was but I don’t think someone who was a bit ocd would drink milk straight from the carton.

I thought for an awkward couple they kissed and hugged too much. I'm waiting for everything to kick off!

polly123 Wed 17-Aug-22 13:06:28

I enjoyed watching the body language and subtle facial expressions. I can understand why the long silences might be boring but there can be a lot going on even when the writing is so economical. I think the viewer has to do the work of reading between the lines. It's obviously a marmite thing.

Have watched two episodes and finding it a slog. I get the point that the banal conversations are substitutes for tackling their real feelings and it's in their actions that we get hints of what is really going on for them. But... OMG, it is tediously slow. These days I have a tendency to fall asleep in front of TV so I've not much chance of getting to the end of this. Awful dissonant music - as if we hadn't already picked up on the dissonance of the marriage. Assuming I keep awake I will watch the rest if only to test some of my theories about their "back story". Recently watched the Australian series "The Newsreader" based around a 1980s TV newsroom - much more engaging.

I've finished it. Loathed it. All of it. Especially the music that kept popping up. Very loudly.

Someone mentioned marmite
Definitely.

And I hate both Marmite and this programme.

I enjoyed mum but found this a bit slow. Would have liked to see the headstone on the grave to understand better and wondered if Jess was adopted. Will stick with it anyway.

Kandinsky Wed 17-Aug-22 13:42:13

Ellie Anne

It was explained in episode 4 about the child they lost & when they adopted Jess - did you actually watch it? grin

Kandinsky Wed 17-Aug-22 13:44:51

Episode 1 meant to say.

I've just moved the shoes in our hallway a few inches ....help!!!

harrysgran Wed 17-Aug-22 13:59:11

Loved every episode of Mum but this was like watching paint dry I stuck it out and watched all four episodes hoping it might improve.

I’ve watched two episodes so far and am quite perplexed that two such excellent actors have been persuaded to star in such utter crap! There’s nothing ringing true to me atm. Is this what a long marriage is like? Mine certainly isn’t, I would have legged it years ago. I agree that the bad language, not that it bothered me, just doesn’t seem appropriate. I read most of the newspaper reviews who all gave it five stars. And the music!! Who is responsible for that? I feel obliged to watch the other episodes but reading these posts am not holding my breath. The first thing I’ve seen with Nichola Walker that I haven’t liked.

Absolute boring garbage, watched the first episode waiting for something of interest to happen, it didn't, end of story for me I'm afraid!

pascal30 Wed 17-Aug-22 15:00:09

I much prefer Van der Valk too

CV2020 Wed 17-Aug-22 15:09:14

I watched the first episode. It was awful despite a great cast. I would have had more fun watching paint dry to be honest!

Susieq62 Wed 17-Aug-22 15:10:48

The point of this drama is that marriage can be dull, stressful, full of nothing at times. I think it is enthralling in its dullness. My partner is hooked and very concerned that he is the character played by Sean Bean. There is so much not being said, simmering beneath the surface.

I much prefer Van der Valk too

What is the connection between van dear valk and this programme ?

Calendargirl Wed 17-Aug-22 15:22:32

Van Der Valk is on ITV at the same time Lucca.

Dianehillbilly1957 Wed 17-Aug-22 15:40:00

Not seen it yet, but heard it's like watching paint dry! I usually love anything Nicola Walker is in, so disappointed to hear this. I will watch at least one episode and judge for myself.

homefarm Wed 17-Aug-22 15:51:59

Bazza there are marriages and marriages

rocketstop Wed 17-Aug-22 15:52:16

I watched it on catch up, hated it, stared out of the window. Nicola Walker and Sean Bean usually very good, just looked as though they were 'Acting' I'm afraid life is too short to persevere with another episode, I get that it's supposed to be a slow burner, but it was painful to watch. Actually I made my own dialogue up cos I couldn't even HEAR it half the time.
Shame cos I was looking forward to it.
