Who boils a pan of water?

Any news programme appears to be saying energy bills are going up by putting a pan of water on the lit stove but whats wrong with the kettle?

SueDonim Sat 27-Aug-22 23:12:04

Maybe they’re going to cook pasta in it? Or can’t afford a kettle.

henetha Sat 27-Aug-22 23:14:25

I use a pan of water for boiled eggs.
They don't fit in the kettle.

Maybe it is to signify a lack of food?

Calendargirl Sun 28-Aug-22 07:02:21

Is it cheaper to boil water on the hob, or boil the kettle?

I always boil the kettle, but I know kettles use a lot of energy. Quicker though.

I just read yesterday that it is cheaper to boil water on a gas hob than to use an electric kettle. We’ve never done this before but might check it out.

I remember my flat mate and I boiling eggs in a kettle when we were students. It did work, but I wouldn’t try it now (especially if it works out dearer to do). grin

A gas hob might be cheaper, doubt if an electric one is.

I've got a 'one-cup' water boiler, supposed to be more economical than a standard kettle. Can't boil eggs in it though. But then again, I wouldn't want to, I always seem to break the shell.

Witzend Sun 28-Aug-22 07:32:56

It’s certainly cheaper for me to boil a pan of water on the gas hob than use the fast-boil electric kettle for a cup of tea or coffee, but I never have.
We have a titchy little one-boiled-egg pan, just right for a mug of hot water - I should start using that, shouldn’t I?

NotAGran55 Sun 28-Aug-22 07:40:06

granma47 I think that the pan on the hob is just a generic way for the program makers to indicate ‘cooking’ and the gas flame ? the use of energy?
A simple universal visual.

*programme not program

Maggie - that reminds me of an incident at work, when a somewhat eccentric senior colleague decided it would be a good idea to heat/boil milk in an electric kettle! It wasn’t - boiling milk erupted up through the lid and spout and went absolutely everywhere, as everyone except him knew it would!

NotSpaghetti Sun 28-Aug-22 09:15:36

Is an induction hob cheaper? No idea!

Barmeyoldbat Sun 28-Aug-22 09:31:35

I used a pan last night to boil water for pasta, always do

nanna8 Sun 28-Aug-22 09:37:09

Georgesgran I cracked up reading that ! I boil water in the kettle and then pour it into a pan for pasta and continue to heat it on the gas stove because it is quicker than heating the water on the stove from scratch. I never even think of the cost, just the speed!

M0nica Sun 28-Aug-22 09:46:21

Perhaps they boil water in a saucepan because they do not know what else to do because they only ever heat ready meals in a microwave.

MaizieD Sun 28-Aug-22 09:51:14

Do you not have an energy cost crisis in Australia, nanna8? It's horrific here in the UK.

I boil water in a saucepan for pasta and anything else that needs to go into boiling water to cook. Why are people finding this odd?

henetha Sun 28-Aug-22 09:53:57

grin Maggiemaybe, that's great!

Because I boil water in the kettle and pour it over the pasta , it takes forever to bring it to the boil on the hob ,from cold

mokryna Sun 28-Aug-22 09:57:41

My exH’s family don’t use kettles, a pan with a lid only. I think it might be a very English /American thing but I could be wrong.

Norah Sun 28-Aug-22 10:24:02

"What is the cheapest way to boil water for tea?"

"The energy experts at Uswitch.com have looked into this and have found that it's much cheaper to boil hot water for tea using a covered pan on a gas hob. They also found that using a microwave is cheaper than using a kettle as well."

Not to such an extent as in Europe - at least not so far. We are a long way from anywhere I suppose.

Just because that's what you do doesn't make it odd if someone does it differently.

I expect you'll change your technique when it's costing you 3 or 4 times as much to boil an electric kettle as it does to heat a bit of water in a saucepan grin
