Your best film ever?

An ad has just flashed up on my phone offering a Private Screening at my local Cineworld Cinema for up to 100 people of my choosing for £120. So a bit like a birthday bowling/ trampolining/ soft play party for a child - but for grown ups.
So it got me thinking - I don’t actually have 100 friends sad so it might be fewer, but what film would I choose ?
While I am thinking - what film was your BEST EVER which you would like to share on a special occasion?
(Presumably the popcorn ? is included )

"Somethings Gotta Give" starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson.

Sleepless in Seattle - cheesy but a real feel good film accompanied by a great soundtrack.

It has to be
It's a wonderful life...

Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago, the original Titanic movie, A Night to Remember ( far better than that dopey one where she stood on the end of the ship ) and I like The Sound of Music as well because it is good to watch with the young grandkids.

Fantasia ! I saw it when I was 12 and fell in love with the fabulous hand drawn animation, the wonderful music especially Night on a Bare Mountain, morphing into the Ave Maria .I think I must have seen it at least 20 times since. It will suit all ages.

AreWeThereYet

The Mission. For the music, the scenery, an actual story, Robert de Niro, Jeremy Irons, and a very young Liam Neeson. But an ending to make you weep.

Strangely I've never met anyone else who has seen it.

I have seen it, big screen and small. The opening sequence, Gabriel’s Oboe, the redemption of RdeN slaver character,
an inevitable ending, wasteful, sad.

My choice(es) would be Elvira Madigan, Fanny and Alexander, Out of Africa,
The Glory of my Father/The Chateau of my Mother or
Some Like it Hot. If I had to select just one I would have to stick a pin.

The two films at the forefront of my mind are Lion and The Constant Gardener.

Rebecca with Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier. The brilliant Mrs Danvers still scares me.

Got to be 'White Christmas' for me, always a winner.

Because The Wizard Of Oz seems to have been on tv for the last umpteen years, I have never sat and watched it. Just said oh no not that again. Suddenly realised I might actually love it if I gave it a chance.

3 Billboards outside Ebbing
Working Girl
Christmas Chronicles
Gone with the Wind
As good as it gets
Random Harvest
Quiet Man
Rebecca
Don’t look now
and about 100 more!!

Silvertwigs Wed 07-Sept-22 13:09:50

Definitely The Talented Mr Ripley

fluttERBY123 Wed 07-Sept-22 13:09:35

My first thought was Gone with the Wind, but was then reminded of Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Zhivago. So 3 at least
Would need to watch all 3 again and then decide.

Bridges of Madison County.

Another great film!

It's when she's in the passenger seat of the lorry.
It's pouring with rain and she's torn between love and duty.

It's like choosing a favourite book. I can't. I love so many of the films already mentioned.
One that hasn't come up is Cinema Paradiso which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1989. It's so moving and has a score by Ennio Morricone and is considered one of the finest films ever made.
I realise that my choices are music led. I love Zulu, Witness, Dr Zhivago, Laurence of Arabia, The Mission, The Last of the Mohicans.
My favourite western of all time is She Wore A Yellow Ribbon with good old John Wayne followed by The Searchers with John Wayne again.

My favourite for watching when I'm on my own is The Bridges of Madison County adapted from the novel by James Waller. It's a love story staring Meryl Streep as an Italian War Bride in Iowa and Clint Eastwood as a photographer on assignment to shoot the historic bridges of Madison County. They meet while her family are away . . .

Maggierose Wed 07-Sept-22 13:02:16

I just went to see The Third Man at the cinema having only seen it on tv before. Brilliant!

Liz62 Wed 07-Sept-22 12:59:58

A couple of oldies The Bridges of Madison County with Clint Eastwood & Meryl Streep 1995 & Same Time Next Year from 1978.

Jazzhands Wed 07-Sept-22 12:59:36

I also love all the 'Men in Black' films.

Ktsmum Wed 07-Sept-22 12:57:32

The Birdcage or Philadelphia

montymops Wed 07-Sept-22 12:52:58

Very difficult to choose best ever! I loved all these-
Bridge of Spies
Gangs of New York
Remains of the Day
Gladiator
A Beautiful Mind
Master and Commander
A Man for all Seasons
The Sting
Bonnie and Clyde
Lawrence of Arabia
Tom Jones
The Theory of Everything
The Imitation Game
Brief Encounter
....and there may be more??

Bluecat Wed 07-Sept-22 12:51:52

I am afraid that all my choices would be comedies. I appreciate a good drama but the ones that I keep re-watching are:

Withnail And I, The Big Lebowski, Bringing Up Baby, and The Philadelphia Story. Excellent scripts and brilliant acting in all of them. (And I am also very fond of The Life of Brian!)

But my first choice would always be Some Like It Hot. I have enjoyed it so many times that I think I could recite all the lines along with the actors. It's pure joy.

Jazzhands Wed 07-Sept-22 12:51:20

My personal favourite: 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' - I love everything about it, and then I got to sit next to the crew at a screening - I was in absolute heaven.

Glad to see a few shout outs for Local Hero..
my all time favourite and I watch it
regularly, just for the escapism to beautiful
Scotland, the magic of the Aurora Borealis
and of course the brilliant soundtrack, even
though my DVD is such poor quality & I
was always disappointed that I never knew if Mac got to return to Scotland.
Another favourite is Baby Boom with Diane
Keaton, which has that really great feel-good
factor. Have to admit the movie I've
probably seen more than any other would be
Top Gun and I can't wait to see Maverick
again as it was just as good, if not better than the first one!
