I have Netflix and Prime?
Any recommendations please?
Thanks.

I too really enjoyed Brokenwood. Hoping for a new series. Murder mysteries with likeable characters. With some humour and not gory.

Only have Freeview, and there's not a lot currently showing that I would recommend, apart from the Bidding Room , Repair Shop and some repeats of The Dog House. These are all non fiction, but the latter two are a joy to watch - and uplifting, - whilst the Bidding Room is just fun because some of the dealers are very quirky.

"Virgin River " (Netflix) is a sort of a soap, really. Gorgeous scenery and plenty of romance, with a few heroes & villains!

Frozen Planet II on IPlayer, excellent.

A Place to Call Home is on a terrestrial channel in the afternoons, sorry I can't remember which one. I loved it and also Virgin River.
The Outlaws is very funny, a very mixed group of people doing community service. BBC Ghosts I think it was called. Inherited house being restored, wife can see all the ghosts there.

Virgin river, or Emily in Paris are good lighthearted series.

But…very cheesy.

I have been catching up on the IPlayer. Thank goodness for the streaming services now.

Mortimer and Whitehouse, gone fishing. Its not really about fishing, but two lovely older men cracking jokes and having the time of their lives in gorgeous countryside. I love it, it makes me smile all the way through.

During the first lockdown I binge watched Downton Abbey on Prime. It was brilliant. I hadn't watched it when on tv. I have been watching some film versions of classic books lately...Jane Austin for example.

Ted Lasso. Its the nicest series ever and Im an ignoramus when it comes to football. Its very funny and endearing, about relationships etc.

MaggsMcG Tue 13-Sept-22 15:05:00

Grace & Frankie on Netflix. The first few Seasons are hilarious. Not so keen on the last one though.

lilydily9 Tue 13-Sept-22 15:23:03

'Still Game' on Netflix is hilarious. Highly recommend it!

I do feel sorry for some of my elderly neighbours who only have Freeview and only ever watch certain programmes and are missing the “soaps”.
Most of us are so spoilt for choice.

I’ve watched The Great and don’t get me started on Outlander lol the books are best sellers and so Is the series but I also like walking dead and handmaiden tale depends on what you like watching really When in lockdown my neighbor said put something on and give it a go watch two episodes to give it ago you might surprise yourself and I did. Tell what is a good movie hachi a dogs tale it had me crying buckets and it’s a true story Richard gere is in it. I told my one of daughter inlaws about it and she said oh my god you didn’t say I needed tissues lol

Young Sheldon. Great family comedy. First 4 series are on Netflix. Series 5, which I’m currently watching is on Prime

Davida1968 Tue 13-Sept-22 16:07:34

I agree with MaggsMcG about "Grace & Frankie". DH & I loved it so much that we've watched it twice. (Same with "Schitts Creek.") Found both series to be light, watchable, & "feel-good".

"Good Omens" is laugh out loud funny! The show follows an angel and a demon quasi-working together (not that their respective higher ups know they have to work together) to keep balance on Earth. The book was a collaboration between Greats: for the book - writers Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, and the TV show - stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant.

Hachi is a wonderful film, one I could watch again at a later date.
A Good Year starring Russell Crowe. A banker who inherits his uncle’s villa in Provence. Beautiful scenery around the village of Gordes.
We rented Downton Abbey - A New Era last night on Prime. Travelling with the family to a villa in the south of France. A must for DA fans.

Chestnut Thank you so much for recommending A Place to Call Home on Prime.

I am only halfway through the 1st episode and already loving it - the clothes, the cars .... terrific.

It's absolutely wonderful. The first episode doesn't even scratch the surface of its wonderfulness! ??

I second Schitts Creek, I was very sorry when it ended.

Is it just me who couldn't get into it?
I found it so annoying!

A Place to Call Home - I recorded it all over here having watched a lot of it in Australia but then our box went wrong.
Is it only on Prime?
Noni Hazlehurst plays such a different part in this.

A Place to Call Home is often on Drama or similar but there are 6 series and over 60 episodes. It's best to start at the beginning rather than hop about, otherwise it gets confusing (I've been there with Line of Duty!) You can always buy the DVDs on Amazon (the complete set). I have bought them and will be saving them for a rainy day (or rainy year).

We have Netflix but not prime but'I have just done a search and found out that A Place to Call Home & The Brockenwood Mysteries are available to view on uktvplay.co.uk/shows/a-place-to-call-home/watch-online & uktvplay.co.uk/shows/the-brokenwood-mysteries/watch-online.

Callistemon21 Tue 13-Sept-22 16:52:59

Thanks Chestnut

I might have to start again, we watched a lot of it but it was years ago.

Callistemon21 Tue 13-Sept-22 16:56:35

Oh, thanks toscalily

Apparently Marta Dusseldorp was in another series about a lawyer which is supposed to be good too. Janet King?

TiggyW Tue 13-Sept-22 17:05:32

The Outlaws on BBC is very good.
Detectorists is back on this week - Diana Rigg and her daughter!
I must admit I like murder mysteries - but only the less intense ones:
Shetland
Ridley
Lots of Scandinavian dramas, e.g. The Bridge, but not cheerful.
If you want to delve into the archives - The Beiderbecke Tapes with James Bolam were brilliant.
Also Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
Porterhouse Blue
The Royle Family
Mum
