Meanwhile a new series of this charming programme has sneaked on to channel 5. Lovely!

LadyGracie Sat 17-Sept-22 16:02:31

It was lovely, lighthearted and fun.

Floradora9 Sat 17-Sept-22 21:41:11

I thought it was dire so predictable and cheesy . I hate what they have done to the original books so many things are wrong. Sorry if you enjoyed it but I only sat through it because DH was watching it .

I was disappointed with the opening episode. Completely OTT wedding stuff.

It seems to be going down the Doc Martin route but it works with Doc Martin.

Callistemon21 Sat 17-Sept-22 22:18:24

I was very disappointed in that episode, it veered off into farce at times when it could have been so much better.

The wedding itself was unbelievable. Popular local young woman marries local vet but the only people in the church, apart from the couple and vicar, were family and two colleagues of the vet.
No villagers in the church? Even if they weren't invited they would have slipped into the back in their best clothes or stood in the churchyard to wish the newly weds well.
Where was the reception? Who ate all the cake?

Mustn't grumble, it might get better.

In the meantime, there's always The Yorkshire Vet!

I thought that too as well as James had been boozing the night before, slept in a barn and didn't even have a wash before changing and walking down the aisle!!!

Ooh, thanks Aveline I’ll have to look on catch up. I love all the gentle cheesy stuff. Looking forward to Darling Buds of May too.

BigBertha1 Sat 17-Sept-22 22:52:28

Not for me I lived in this Python his area and know the history of the books. This new series doesn't work.

Maggymay Sat 17-Sept-22 23:27:09

I recently binge watched the original series with Christopher Timothy on UKplay really enjoyed it even though I watched them all many years ago.

We said exactly the same Callistemon. Also Helen didn’t promise to ‘honour and obey’

Aveline Sun 18-Sept-22 08:01:36

It's not a documentary!

ginny Sun 18-Sept-22 08:05:10

I enjoy it , cheese an all.
Spottybook why would a feisty woman promise to obey. My Mum didn’t in 1946 and nor did I in 1976.

Greyduster Sun 18-Sept-22 08:30:06

I could have written Callistemon’s post - rather disappointed. Hope it gets better.

Yangste1007 Sun 18-Sept-22 08:35:51

I thought it was dire too.

I was expecting Helen to hold her nose ?

Sarah74 Sun 18-Sept-22 10:17:09

It was odd there were so few in the church - I thought perhaps it had been filmed during Covid / less people - but then there were a few in the pub. Were J’s parents there?
I’d enjoyed this series previously but thought this episode too cheesy for words.

Glorianny Sun 18-Sept-22 10:24:32

I wondered about the "obey" then remembered my mum said she hadn't promised that in 1941. I thought maybe they were on a tight budget and couldn't afford the extras for in the church.
It's light hearted escapism which isn't a bad thing just now.

spottybook Sun 18-Sept-22 10:49:13

Ah, then I stand corrected re the honour and obey. I had thought this was a ‘modern day’ omission.

Grandma70s Sun 18-Sept-22 10:56:34

My mother didn’t promise to obey in 1935! I certainly didn’t in 1968. Why would anybody?

grannysyb Sun 18-Sept-22 13:01:53

It got a five star review in the Times, goodness knows why. I was really disappointed, silly farcical situations, hope the next episode is better.

BlueSapphire Sun 18-Sept-22 14:00:02

Yes, I wondered why there were so few at the wedding?
Surely the whole village would have turned out?

Glorianny Sun 18-Sept-22 14:33:29

I think the possibility of dropping it was introduced in the 1920s. A lot of women still did in the '30s and '40s

If only to make sure she turned up this time!

Sarah74 Sun 18-Sept-22 16:08:43

They seem a very ill-matched couple to me!

GrannyGravy13 Sun 18-Sept-22 16:44:24

I enjoyed it for what it was, a lightweight programme, involving characters from the books nothing more nothing less.
