Was The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas really intended for children? I know it's told in the first person by a child, but that doesn't mean it was written for children to read, surely?

I can't imagine it was originally meant for children and I believe it is morally wrong to show it to primary school children.

I watched a programme about children of Nazis It was awful to see how traumatised they were by the actions of their father or grandfather. It affects their whole lives in such a profound way. However, one man had actually lived as a boy with his family in a house which seemed to be exactly like the house in the film. His father was the Nazi in charge of the camp. There was no mention of him making contact with anyone in the camp however. It was just the house being right next to the camp and everything else that was accurate.

Apparently this movie or book is totally unsuitable for educational purposes because it is not historically accurate. Read the section 'Educational Implications'
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_in_the_Striped_Pyjamas
This might be very useful if anyone wants to challenge the school for teaching it to children.

I once saw an excerpt of The Snow Goose and don't thnk I'd be able to cope with the whole thing. It was about love and loss at the time of Dunkirk.

Started watching Schindlers List but had to ask my husband to switch it off after the first 5-10 minutes. I can’t bear people being cruel to each other.

For me it would be Sophie’s Choice. I’ve never seen the film nor read the book (is there one?), but I know the choice. I have two sons. I couldn’t watch it. The very prospect gives me nightmares.

I watched an episode of Mystery and Imagination in the 60s/70s, I thought it was going to be like the Addams Family, big mistake! !!! It was horrendous, it was called The Sorcerer I think, I was terrified in bed and terrified to go the toilet at night,
I've never seen The Exorcist, I don't want to see it, and wouldn't even have the DVD/VIDEO in the house, don't know why, I've watched loads of horror movies, they don't bother me at all .

schindlers list has to be one of the best films, very powerful, the scene where oscar schindler says he could have done more, makes me weep everday time,

Never watched The Exorcist and hate anything with sexual violence in and won't watch.

I think there are a lot of producers/directors who make horror films, they are 'people manipulators' and have to weald power (probably bullied when kids). They get their kicks from seeing people upset.

Gosh...where do I start...sighs

That film about Iris Murdoch getting dementia, I think it was called Iris. I have in fact seen it in the cinema where I sobbed my heart out because my beloved Grannie went that way. I could never watch it again.

I will never watch My Sister's Keeper ever again, so sad
Never watched Watership Down either Anything that I think would have animal cruelty in it. Black Beauty even upset me.

I can't think of any films I wouldn't watch because I'd believe they'd upset me. There are ones that have-- 'The Mission', '12 Years a Slave' and 'The Boy in Striped Pyjamas'. I remember DH being deeply upset by the second and the ending of the latter haunts me still. I couldn't watch it again. How they think it can be shown to young children, I don't understand.
I don't watch horror films simply because I find them risible not upsetting.

I wish I had never watched “The Last King of Scotland”.

Me too.

Philippa111 Thu 20-Oct-22 11:39:14

I can't watch anything that involves harm, bullying, control, torture, abuse, abuse of children, horror, chilling suspense, killing etc which means there is very little I can watch!!

My daughter tells me which ones she knows I won't want to see.
I thought Slumdog Millionaire was going to be a lovely story. It was horrific and upset me deeply and the thought of it still does. We have a restaurant called Slumdog here in town!! I just can't get my head around anyone saying it was a 'good' movie!!

jenpax Thu 20-Oct-22 11:38:20

I literally can’t watch any horror films (Hammer Horror excepted) or ANY film that depicts torcher, rape, child or animal abuse war crimes or basically any traumatising film whatsoever! The news and actual events are awful enough without my spending my precious free time giving myself nightmares!

Pammie1 Thu 20-Oct-22 11:37:15

Schindlers list - the only Spielberg film I haven’t seen.

leeds22 Thu 20-Oct-22 11:35:54

Can’t/won’t watch Horror films and I avoid war films. But I did watch Saving Private Ryan and thought it very good. Saw Silence of the Lambs at the cinema and was traumatised for days after.

The Boy in Striped Pyjamas used to be read in Year 7 at secondary school. It is now read at Primary school and I believe that the film is also viewed. I had to watch part of it at secondary school (was covering a lesson). Awful. I found it unbearable.

Annaram1 Thu 20-Oct-22 11:26:14

Schindlers list.

Foxyferret Thu 20-Oct-22 11:20:52

Marley and me. Having owned and said goodbye to a few labs over the years, this really upset me. I have 4 labs at the mo, so 4 more upsets to come. Why do I do it?

Cressy Wed 19-Oct-22 21:22:39

The Hunger Games. Children killing each other just to survive.

Peartree Wed 19-Oct-22 20:13:03

Hostal and Wolf Creek both horror films. Oh and Jeepers Creepers.

Forestflame Wed 19-Oct-22 09:56:10

Talking of Old Yeller reminds me of the awful Public Information films they used to show on TV back in the 70's with someone dying of Rabies. It was to put people off smuggling animals in from abroad. Scared seven shades out of me then (and still does now).

Wikipedia says A Dog of Flanders had a happy ending. So maybe then as now I cry as much when a film has a happy ending as I do when it’s sad. I bought the dvd of Old Yeller a while back and still haven’t watched it. I think that is sad….

I saw “Old yeller”in the cinema and broke my heart..?.. that must be over 50 years ago now..
