I was a little concerned about the upset on the current series dropping on Netflix and the PR around this is just a drama..the first 2 episodes with the new actors didn't really inspire me..however Episode 3 about Sydney is very interesting and wondered if this was a true character and find that he was and enter Mohammed Al Fayid..and the purchase of The Ritz and then Harrods...fascinating series..

As I said, there are millions of people all over the world who know virtually nothing about the RF and assume that the family dynamics, the characters and events are all true and factual, if not the exact conversations. They will get an overall impression of the people and what they are like, no matter how inaccurate it all is.

This, exactly.

GG13 'I do not know anyone who thinks that this Netflix Drama is a true representation of the life of the Royal Family'

if they live in the UK, of course they will realise it is not 'the truth'. And no TerriT, it is not just another 'soap opera'- as it is about real people, many alive today, and children too.

As Chestnut said, and Aveline hinted at earlier- people around the world are just fascinated by the RF- and they do believe The Crown is the truth.

Chestnut Sun 13-Nov-22 15:30:20

Apparently Prince Philip was very hurt and upset when Netflix made out he had been blamed for his sister's death in an earlier episode, which was absolutely not true. He asked lawyers 'what can I do?'

That gives you an idea of the misrepresentation going on here. It is very hurtful to the people being portrayed, and leaves an inaccurate impression with the viewer.

But all those people listen to the imaginary narrative that is endlessly pushed about the royal family why is the crown any different.

Aveline Sun 13-Nov-22 17:15:35

I was interested to hear that Jephson thought that there were no lies or distortions of truth in the series. Some transpositions of events but nothing much else.
John Major hasn't agreed about the parts about him. I hadn't realised he'd had such a big role in the separation and divorce.

Rosina Sun 13-Nov-22 17:39:35

John Major became a guardian to William and Harry after their Mother's death. He must have been held in high regard.

Aveline Sun 13-Nov-22 18:09:38

Yes he must have been. Obviously very discreet.

I am amazed at some of these posts seemingly convinced that so many countries are interested in the monarchy of this country. And more so that they are gripped by The Crown series. From my time overseas , whenever the British monarchy subject came up , it seemed amazing to them that we paid for this family just to be so very superior to the British people. Only saying my experience. But I feel sure some of you would be shocked at how we are seen on the worlds stage in these modern times.. Just because you don’t like to hear it doesn’t mean it isn’t true!

Aveline Sun 13-Nov-22 19:36:36

I'm talking about America and Canada where there seems to be great interest.

MawtheMerrier Sun 13-Nov-22 19:42:16

To my enormous surprise I am enjoying it! Perhaps just because the events are more familiar, being closer to the present day, I find it perfectly easy to suspend disbelief.
I find I am also warming to Imelda Staunton as HM - a canny lady in real life as well as in the dramatic “fiction “.

Fleurpepper Sun 13-Nov-22 19:42:32

They are truly fascinated by the RF, and The Crown is on top of viewing all over the world, you have no idea.

But yes, at the same time- the UK is sadly seen as one big sad joke at the moment, totally separately.

TerriT Sun 13-Nov-22 19:48:38

America is one of the countries I refer to. Their interest is purely of the ‘oh it’s just so cute’ variety. I’ve lived there and have many friends there and I’ve always been asked why we don’t mind paying for this family! So those that are watching The Crown are just watching an entertaining t.v.show . They will not care a jot if what they see is true or made up.

TerriT Sun 13-Nov-22 19:52:56

Fleurpepper. I am fascinated by your comments that The Crown is top viewing all over the world! I hate to break it to you but I feel you are sadly mistaken. But it’s still enjoyable on these dark dreary days…..

Iam64 Sun 13-Nov-22 20:48:58

Fleurpepper - the Uk is definitely in a difficult place currently.
It isn’t my experience that the uk is seen as a big sad joke all over the world. I’m not so demoralised or defeated to see the uk in that way. I’m as fed up as the next person with years of Tory misrule but / are we downhearted 😂💖

I am afraid it is the case. The whole world is fascinated by the RF, and the Queen and family are constantly front cover of magazines, etc, all over.

Aveline Sun 13-Nov-22 21:02:43

TerriT I hate to break it to you but the Crown is top Netflix viewing. That's international.

Urmstongran Sun 13-Nov-22 21:08:26

Me too Maw! I think Imelda Staunton is a fine actress and although I’m only halfway through Episode 2 I’m enjoying it immensely, already! I love the music too at the opening and the graphics that portray ‘the gold’ of the Crown. I think it adds gravitas to the production.

The actress playing Princess Diana has her mannerisms and voice patterns off to a ‘T’ but I’m finding her coy ‘doe eyes’ a bit too much! Never mind, only a small criticism.

I love the actress who is playing the part of Princess Margaret. I can’t remember her name it’s on the tip of my tongue ... Lesley Manville. Just come back to me! Good choice she captures the mischievous persona really well I think. Another fine actress.

I know I’m going to enjoy this series!

Never miss a trick gringrin.

Grantanow Sun 13-Nov-22 23:06:57

I watched the whole of the current series but I wouldn't bother to watch a repeat. It was OK as soaps go but nothing very special.

I'm not sure where you get that idea, FP. The Netflix viewing figures are not available for the week The Crown was released.

Here are the figures for TV shows (films are separate). You can adjust them to see various countries' viewing, but as you will see, they are for the week ending 6 November.

I think the fact that so many millions of people watched the Queen's funeral worldwide gives you some idea of the level of interest in the royal family. It was one of the most watched events ever, claims of 5.1 billion worldwide have been made but not confirmed. There were some 29 million watching in the UK and over 5 million in Australia (watching on TV alone).

Also, I think that one event has shown the world what we are capable of and has raised our profile on the world stage.

vegansrock Mon 14-Nov-22 07:35:29

The funeral l was reported on the news in most countries, so the idea that billions were glued to the sets for the whole service at the same time is just wrong. My brother said he saw bits of it on the news but didn’t know anyone watching the whole thing as it was an ordinary workday. I’m guessing not that many got up at odd times to watch it live either. Why would anyone care what others believe/ don’t believe anyway ?

MawtheMerrier Mon 14-Nov-22 10:29:40

Voice of reason * Doodledog* !
I am reminded of the advice to newspaper reporters (was it on “Scoop,” ?)
“Never let the facts get in the way of a good story”
But it also got me looking and I can honestly say that I have not watched ONE of the top 10! Interesting to see the most popular in other countries too

Vintagejazz Fri 18-Nov-22 08:10:11

I've only watched 3 episodes so far but I'm finding it very dull and lacklustre.
Why a whole episode focussed largely on Margaret having a reunion with Peter Townsend. She didn't want to marry him in the end, and wasn't prepared to give up her place in line to the throne for him. It wasn't some great love story.

I also don't think the Prince Philip/Penny story warrants so much time, or the Al Fayeds rise to riches. I found myself fast forwarding a lot.

Doodledog Fri 18-Nov-22 08:40:43

I think it went off the boil in this series, It feels like there is too much padding.

Greyduster Fri 18-Nov-22 09:08:38

I didn’t watch The Crown the first time around but got caught up in it recently. And yes, I can separate fact from fiction. I think the latest series is a little cringeworthy to be honest, and is it just me that thinks that Imelda Staunton’s portrayal of the Queen in this series is rather brittle?
