I was a little concerned about the upset on the current series dropping on Netflix and the PR around this is just a drama..the first 2 episodes with the new actors didn't really inspire me..however Episode 3 about Sydney is very interesting and wondered if this was a true character and find that he was and enter Mohammed Al Fayid..and the purchase of The Ritz and then Harrods...fascinating series..

I certainly wasn't sad/distraught or griefstricken by her death. She was an old lady who lived a very privileged life and who made sure her family are set up to do the same To be honest I've lost a lot of people in real lfe in the past two years who I was close to ,lizzie didn't even register on the grief scale .
I'm sure she didn't grieve for my MIL.my cousin.my OH's uncle and the dozen friends we'd known for over 40 years who died during the Pandemic .So why would I grieve for her ?
As far as I'm concerned the whole overprivileged bunch of parasites should have been handed their p45's when she died .

I'm pretty sure the Queen did grieve for the many people who died during the pandemic although she didn't know them personally. That is the nature of the relationship between us (the public) and those in positions of power or fame. We see them, mostly on TV, they don't see us unless they walk around talking to us (which they do). So how unfair to criticise the Queen for not grieving for your family or not working hard enough for you.

I’ve no problem with Republicans. I believe it’s legitimate to discuss the future and role of the monarchy.
I believe referring to human beings as “over privileged parasites’ if unkind, unnecessary and won’t aid republican sentiments. Criticise the institution, criticise family members for specific behaviour but parasites - I find that offensive towards people who didn’t and possibly wouldn’t have chosen their birth right

Iam64 ''How can you assure us 100% true that many people all over the world watch and believe it’s true Fleurpepper?
We don’t know. I’ve seen no research to confirm your statement.''

Of course there is no 'research'. We happen to have an incredibly diverse family and friends all over the world, and their comments do indicate that they believe it is all based on true, verified, facts. Have had many discussions where they are shocked to hear it is not.

paddyann, this is not the point here. Can you imagine a series being shown on TV all over the world that portrays your parents, closest family and own life, and full of untruths and sheer lies. As if, for instance, William and Harry have been through enough pain.

Bea65 Sat 12-Nov-22 19:05:53

Oh thought OP was stating an opinion about this Drama..for some GNs this is becoming intense..are we all soo aggressive and volatile in our comments..why ??

Fleurpepper Sat 12-Nov-22 19:06:40

And yes, it is totally different to East Enders, Coronation Street and other 'soaps'.

Bea65 Sat 12-Nov-22 19:13:18

Totally different but still a Drama of historical incidents..

Fleurpepper Sat 12-Nov-22 19:23:40

'incidents' or real lives, of people who are still here, and their children too.

Iam64 Sat 12-Nov-22 20:14:41

Well I’m surprised that relatives and friends previously described as well informed are blindsided by the Crown
I’m watching the episode introducing Mohammed al Fayed, I know it’s dramatised fiction but I’m appreciating a fairly sympathetic introduction of a young Egyptian from not Al Fayed beginnings who built an empire on hard work and determination. It seems often forgotten, or minimised, that he lost his first born, much loved son in the tragedy that killed Dianna

vegansrock Sat 12-Nov-22 20:24:49

I’ve got family in several countries and they know that this is dramatised and is not going to be accurate word for word. They love it but know a lot of it is tosh.

Fleurpepper Sat 12-Nov-22 21:23:39

We can only report as we find. I imagine anyone British will realise. Family and friends in USA have been there for 4 generations, are fascinated, and so are those in OZ, NZ, SA, who again have been there for several generations, and all over Europe- always seem surprised when I say 'you do realise it is not factual and highly 'spun'.

Chestnut Sat 12-Nov-22 23:51:15

There are millions of people watching this all over the world who know very little about our royal family. And millions of them will take this on face value because they know no better. It may be the only detailed representation they have seen of the family so why would they not believe it?

Just watched the first episode of series 5. I agree that the casting isn't quite right. Prince Philip never became the "old" man he is being portrayed as - and at the time in question he was barely seventy. Also, it didn't captivate me like the series 1 and 2 did.

What I find so disappointing about the storyline is that there must be so much material out there that could be used to tell a much more accurate story which would be really captivating, and yet they have chosen to make things up.

Bea65 Sun 13-Nov-22 05:45:54

AussieGran59 yes the first 2 episodes nearly turned me off with new cast but after episode 3 with the intro on M al Fayed agree with Iam64 I too was sympathetic to the fact that he made his own money...and he too lost his son but this hardly gets remembered or mentioned...

Doodledog Sun 13-Nov-22 07:35:44

I thought the AF episode was superfluous in a series about The Crown. It seemed like filler rather than adding to the story.

I don’t think that this series is as good as the previous four, but I can’t quite put my finger on why.

Babs758 Sun 13-Nov-22 08:20:51

I have just watched the Fyed episode and thought it was very well done. I assume the story about Fyed taking in Edward’s valet is also true in which case a fascinating combination.
The best out of the three I have watched by far.

Babs758 Sun 13-Nov-22 08:32:59

Love the use of Shostakovich as the Royal family visit the Villa!

Aveline Sun 13-Nov-22 10:11:20

I agree Babs758. It was very well done. Its relevance will most likely emerge across the series.
I wish Philip, Charles and Anne were better cast.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 13-Nov-22 10:32:00

I watched episode 1 of the latest series yesterday, I did not enjoy it as much as previous episodes/series.

Will continue to watch.

I do not know anyone who thinks that this Netflix Drama is a true representation of the life of the Royal Family

Aveline Sun 13-Nov-22 10:35:31

You've been lucky then GG13!

hollysteers Sun 13-Nov-22 10:45:15

Netflix know that they can now throw anything together based on the early series of the Crown or royalty and the money will keep rolling in.
That is not to say it isn’t well made, but as was mentioned upthread, likenesses and details are important.
The Queen Mother physically was like a Christmas pudding, but here is lanky and vague, Diana looks skeletonial (?) and Prince Philip, well, full marks for miscasting. And he holds his knife like a pencil! Julian Fellowes would not have allowed that.
If Prince Charles looked like Dominic West, he probably would have got away with more than he has by purely charming us.

However, the actress playing Penny Romsey is spot on and Andrew too is believable.

A problem with Imelda Staunton is that her eyes are so small, in a role which has to rely on facial expressions and little else, we can’t project the feelings on to her. She’s wonderful in roles which need a lot of acting. Claire Foy had very expressive eyes, so we projected emotions on to her.

Aveline Sun 13-Nov-22 13:54:02

HKLP?! Oh no!

TerriT Sun 13-Nov-22 14:56:11

Anyone watching the crown and believing it’s all true must be a bit dozy in my opinion. How can anyone know who says what to whom in conversations between people? It’s just a soap with very posh actors and bits of truth scattered through it. We know the true bits because they were headline news at the time! The rest of the show is entertainment. And before anyone says why am I watching it? Answer is I’m bored to tears just now!!

Chestnut Sun 13-Nov-22 15:04:12

As I said, there are millions of people all over the world who know virtually nothing about the RF and assume that the family dynamics, the characters and events are all true and factual, if not the exact conversations. They will get an overall impression of the people and what they are like, no matter how inaccurate it all is.
