The Way Women Dress on TV

I am probably being old fashioned here but feel free to disagree with me but I'm noticing more and more women showing a lot of cleavage on tv nowadays. People will say "If you've got it flaunt it" but there's a time and a place. One woman who presents programmes from a lot of different countries always has low cut tops on and goes to Muslim countries which seems quite inappropriate to me.
The thing that has topped all this is watching Eastenders tonight where the character Amy Mitchell who portrays a 14 year old schoolgirl was sat in the pub in a low cut top showing all her cleavage. I found it quite wrong to dress a schoolgirl like this even if it is a soap. I know times change and girls like their fashions. What do you think?

I think sometimes that some of our posters on Gransnet must lead very sheltered lives Glorianny. Many younger people wear very skimpy clothing to go out these days. I can’t honestly say I’ve ever noticed television presenters wearing unsuitable clothing to be honest.

Those who think that TV presenters are immodestly dressed should take a trip into a town and look at what young women are wearing on nights out. I recently watched some students arriving at an evening event. The young men were in suits and djs sometimes with a tie sometimes without. Years ago we would have worn a long dress for such a thing. The girls were in the skimpiest, tightest, shortest, low cut dresses you can imagine. Made TV presenters look positively covered up!

I’ve got loads of shoes with heels bought for various weddings/functions. I even bought a pair of those with red soles for my son and daughter’s weddings, they both got married the same year. I never wear them now though, none of them. I would if I went on a cruise again I would think, but that’s not very likely just yet. Because of Covid. And I’m not taking any of them to New Zealand, although we are planning a couple of afternoon teas in nice hotels. I’ve got nice sandals to take for those. I think I’ll mainly need my Sketchers sandals or trainers when I’m there.

I love my Sketchers, they’re so very comfortable. I’ve got several pairs, ballet types, trainers, boots (with a fur trim, really nice) and I’ve even got a little evening pair with diamanté on them, I got them in New York though, never seem anything like them here in the UK. Or was LA? Oh I don’t know, it was America.

I think these mens loafers are beautiful.

I can’t really wear heels, but I love makeup, clothes, and generally looking a bit more glam than the situation calls for. I don’t always wear things to show off my figure, but when I do I’m certainly not doing it for the male gaze - I’m a lesbian.

Hello

Can anyone help me?

I appear to have accidentally time travelled back to the 1950s

Blossoming Wed 16-Nov-22 16:27:23

Same here Callistemin.

Just returned to the thread, my goodness it’s a good job Grannygravy has been posting. Some very diverse views 😮

Callistemon21 Wed 16-Nov-22 14:48:32

I'd love to be able to wear high heels.

My clumpy shoes, trainers and boots are a result of necessity, not choice.

If people can’t focus on a tv programme because of someone’s cleavage, they’re probably not mature enough to be following the programme.

I'm good at multi-tasking!
I can listen to Bettany and notice her cleavage too.

I’m another who doesn’t care what women wear on television. A bikini would be pushing though.

We disagree on lots of things PaddyAnne54 but on this I totally agree.

Love my heels, enjoy dressing well and wearing makeup.

paddyann54 Wed 16-Nov-22 13:53:38

I dont get the "sexy shoes" comment ,I wear high heels because I'm short and they make me 3 or 4 inches taller .
My friends daughter used to call my long boots "prostitute boots" ,shame people bring their kids up with such narrow minds .
Of course we could emulate China in its Mao days and all wear the same uniform...but I can guarantee some folk would complain that other folk looked better in their uniform than they did .

I think it’s refreshing watching Scandi tv detective films where the women generally look like ordinary women, and are not “glammed up”.

"Such a shame studio bosses -mostly men (my guess)- insist on the glamourising, and I think, essentially objectifying these professional women."

I felt that in the 1970's and still do, well said - if thats happening - I wonder whose choice it is to "glamourise up?"

I don’t believe many women are pressurised to glam up now.
Don’t you accept that some of us like to dress up to the nines given the opportunity? It’s enjoyable and we can do far more than men to help our appearance along. I would certainly make the most of myself if I was called upon to work in television (leaving my non existent cleavage out of it…)
This belief that men are still controlling our every move is part of the victimisation of women that Meghan Markle keeps harping on about, we don’t live in Iran.

Off duty, can’t be bothered, sick or at home, we don’t have to do anything dress wise these days.

In Australia, the national broadcast station does not seem to dictate what women wear and most presenters look like we’ll groomed every
day people. Hair is also not styled to the nth degree.

Our public multi cultural channel is the same more or less.

It’s the commercial stations that are the main offenders presenting overly glamourised newsreaders, presenters etc.

I rarely watch commercial tv mostly because there are way too many adverts but when I do, I feel like I’m watching a bit of a beauty parade. These are mostly intelligent interesting women too. Such a shame studio bosses -mostly men (my guess)- insist on the glamourising, and I think, essentially objectifying these professional women.

Calistemon: Kinky Boots?

A man wearing high heels would wobble and sway same as woman in high heels .

Grany Tue 15-Nov-22 22:46:42

I agree showing too much cleavage doesn't look nice too much on show with some woman these days.

I have to wonder when passing teenage schoolgirls waiting for school bus near where we live as I take my granddaughter to preschool they have skirts rolled up showing a lot of thigh and then black stockings up to their knee. I say to my granddaughter don't they look silly she agrees and when she sees them she says look nanny those girls look so silly, Now nearly five goes to reception class which is nearer so don't see girls.

I suppose the girls think they look cool they must be in this weather but really it's not a good look.

Blossoming Tue 15-Nov-22 22:43:15

That’s a very telling response halfpint1 grin

Why do royal ladies wear high heels to public ceremonies, even to funerals? High heels increase sexual desirability due to the elongating effect on wearers' legs. Why is sexual power supposed to be okay for women? If a man went to a royal funeral wearing sexy footwear he would be blamed for his bad taste.

Is there such a thing as sexy footwear for men?

🤔

What a very enlightening* thread. I’m 5ft 2ins with a pair of FFs that could take someone’s eye out. Mother Nature is responsible for endowing me with them. It’s kind of difficult to disguise them, they’re stuck right out in front of me, and why should I? No matter how I dress they’re always going to be noticeable. If that makes me common as one poster has said, good.

*Sarcasm.

Moi aussi! If they make me common, then I'm not quite sure what I was expected to do about them?
