WATCHING ...Harry & Meghan Netflix

It was interesting to hear the input from the historian David Olusoga on the documentary. A discussion about colonialism and it's aftermath on British society. It showed the sculptures and art which is displayed in royal palaces which depict black slaves in chains. Surely these should be removed as slavery was one of the greatest crimes in humanity. All the time they are displayed then I feel there is an impact on people's perceptions of black community as being inferior. This was apparent in Bristol when a statue of the slave trader Colston was thrown into the harbour and all the establishments removed his name.
Why are they still on display in royal households ?
Then the dreadful racism in the tabloids suggesting Meghan coming from Compton and affecting the royal blood line. Why wasn't that stopped by the royal media coordinator ? Prince William brought about an injunction against the press when they tried taking photos of Kate on honeymoon. Why did the abuse of Meghan continue unchecked ?

Same here Lucca. I don't love 'em, I don't loath 'em. I'm mostly indifferent. But I am bemused and shocked at the bile that pours out of the mouths of GN members about them. And like the woman insulted by Lady Wotsit at the palace, ultimately, because MM is not white. A whole range of other reasons on top of that too, but at the very root, racism.

The amount of hatred people can have for someone they don't know and have never met astounds me.

I might watch the series. I might not. I suspect it'll bore me. But I read the infamous Diana book ,one about the Duke of Windsor and will probably read Spare, so may well give the Netflix series a go too.

Sorry to hear about your mobility issues though. Is there a chance it will improve, or is it thought to be permanent, given your ongoing illness?

She has always been a supporter of women's and girls' rights since she was young.

Is it the media, the system or his family which is making him angry? Possibly all three but it's sad that insinuations about family members are made and cannot be refuted.

I'm chuckling at Mishal Husseins response to Megan's comments about their engagement interview that she conducted.Apparently it was 'an orchestrated reality show ' (a bit ironic as surely that's what this docuseries is?) and they weren't allowed to tell their story.MH has said I was asked to do an interview. I did an interview. Recollections may vary .Classy !

I don't have Netflix but have been thinking of treating myself in the new year, especially if they have a special deal.

Do Netflix's own things stay on Netflix for ever?

My take on H&M:
* I was very glad that Harry had found someone that made him happy, and that she was outside the heretofore normal Royal mould.
* I think he clung to her like a drowning man to a life belt. We all respond to dreadful events differently, so the fact that William appears to have "coped better" with their mother's death, with media pressure etc is completely irrelevant. Harry's mental health is Harry's mental health.
* I think he saw an opportunity to escape and seized it. Good luck to him.
* I've never been able to understand why "people" have always blamed Meghan for their apparently toxic relationships with their families.

From others' reports of The Interview and now The Documentary, they sound a right pair of ticks; but maybe they're damaged individuals doing the best they can but with dreadful advisors.

These posts go on for pages (I display mine 100 posts at a time) so there are obviously a lot of us without better things to do! On the other hand, those who don't get back to a post for a while then cause excitement because they've posted and run. Like you, I am not particularly an H&M fan but there are enough people out there to pick out the things that irritate me and I do hate to see people treated badly because of their race or culture.

The Press actually know far more about the people and incidents they are following than they publish, because of their proximity to them, plus their research plus backstairs gossip, true but difficult to prove. Social media is far more dangerous but much more difficult to regulate.
Meghan sued the press and won, even though she was proved to have 'misremembered, ' details therefore the press will pursue her. She is not called to account for her many and varied 'inaccuracies'; they are.

It is quite ironic, given their dislike of Royal life to want to go on promoting themselves as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

If dirt exists who decides when it should be hidden?

Anything that breaks a law shouldn’t be allowed and there is legal redress if it does.

But opinion has to be free to be expressed.

I am not keen on blanket condemnation of the press to be honest, and I would be very cautious in terms of limiting press freedom. I think we have to put up with those excesses because the alternative (controlling the press) is much worse.

Indeed - which is why I have presented it as a dilemma.

Curbing press freedom would be wrong, but the free-for-all we have now is unacceptable too. Crucifying individuals and paying people to dig up dirt on them cannot be something we wish to see.

In principle I do too, but there must be limits to that freedom. Articles which are overtly or covertly racist or are victimising individuals should not be allowed.

If there’s to be freedom for people (anybody) to tell their story as they see it, then there’s to be freedom for other people to comment on what they’ve said.

That’s freedom. As Galaxy says the alternative is worse.

Perhaps the solution is for people to exercise judgment and be aware of their own prejudices and irrational responses.
